The theological virtues direct man to supernatural happiness in the same way as by the natural inclination man is directed to his connatural end.
Christ raises our finite human nature far beyond what it could accomplish by its own power, giving to His disciples a share in the supernatural life of God Himself. The Seven Virtues: Cardinal & Theological Virtues
The Catholic Church highlights the seven most important virtues as the theological virtues and the cardinal virtues.
A virtue is an habitual and firm disposition to do the good. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1803)
A virtue is a habit, trait, behavior, or quality that is morally good.
There are three theological virtues and four cardinal virtues.
3 Theological Virtues + 4 Cardinal Virtues = 7 Virtues
The Theological Virtues
These three virtues are gifts from God. They are not learned or practiced independently from God.
The theological virtues are:
1. Faith (Belief)
2. Hope (Trust)
3. Charity (Love)
St. Paul expressed these three virtues in his letter to the Corinthians:
"And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love." (1 Corin...

What are the virtues and how do they help us?
The catechism reminds us, “A virtue is a habitual and firm disposition to do the good” (CCC 1803). There are two distinct types of virtues: human virtues and theological virtues. The human virtues involve our intellect and will and are known as prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. These human virtues are rooted in the theological virtues. They’re called the theological virtues because they are gifts from God, and are directed towards God. The three theological virtues are faith, hope, and love.

C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, Book Four
The title of this is somewhat misleading insofar as I begin with a discussion of the conclusion of Book Three, where C.S. Lewis describes faith. After noting its odd placement at the conclusion of the theological virtues (Biblically and traditionally, it would precede hope and charity), I look at his discussion of the Trinity, prayer, and personhood.

There are three theological virtues and four cardinal virtues.
3 Theological Virtues + 4 Cardinal Virtues = 7 Virtues

These three virtues are gifts from God. They are not learned or practiced independently from God.
The theological virtues are:

2. Hope (Trust)
3. Charity (Love)
St. Paul expressed these three virtues in his letter to the Corinthians:
"And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love." (1 Corinthians 13:13)
The Cardinal Virtues
The four cardinal virtues are shared with the world of philosophy. The word "cardinal" means "hinge." These are the four virtues upon which all other human virtues are hinged. These virtues are the foundational of all other human virtues. These are human virtues because they are ideals we can aspire to through education and disciplined practice.
The cardinal virtues are:
1. Prudence (Wisdom)
2. Fortitude (Courage)
3. Temperance (Self-control)
4. Justice (Fairness)

Many folks start out on the path of virtue when they're young, but get sidelined into worldly pursuits by middle age. Why is this so common? In my opinion, this phenomenon is due to the fact that many people inappropriately expect more of virtue than it can deliver. Virtue only makes you good. Expecting wealth or beauty or status or sex or success or health simply because you are virtuous is foolish. However, I believe that virtue is still worth cultivating for two reasons, as I discuss in this episode.

Courage, Justice, Temperance, and Wisdom are the four pillars upon which Stoic philosophy is built. In this video, Ryan Holiday talks about the importance of these four stoic virtues, in the philosophy and his life. Following these virtues with conviction is key to a good life.
As Marcus Aurelius said:
“If, at some point in your life, you should come across anything better than justice, prudence, self-control, courage—than a mind satisfied that it has succeeded in enabling you to act rationally, and satisfied to accept what’s beyond its control—if you find anything better than that, embrace it without reservations—it must be an extraordinary thing indeed—and enjoy it to the full."

Jesse Cook | Virtue (Official Music Video)
This was my first time directing, filming and editing a music video on my own for one of my songs. I had a wonderful time doing it and found the visual medium incredibly inspiring. All of the shots were taken either in my home or during actual tours. There was no location scouting for this project, no set design or make-up artists. This is the first time I have had a music video which really represented something of my life.
Special thanks to my percussionist, Chendy Leon and my wife Nancy Cardwell for taking up the camera duties for the steadycam shots of me. There are some things I can't do, even with a tripod.
