The Silver Bridge Disaster of 1967 | A Brief history of Documentary
#history #bridge #disaster
The Silver bridge was an Eyebar link Bridge in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, United States which spanned the Ohio River .
It was opened in 1928 but was designed for the lighter vehicles of the time as it was thus not future-proofed for more modern heavier traffic.
On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge had a catastrophic failure under the weight of rush-hour traffic, resulting in the deaths of 46 people.
The collapse would be attributed to many theories including a low flying aircraft and even mothman, but would be due to a minute crack and its non-redundant design.

Silver Bridge Disaster Only A Scar Remains 1992 WCHS
It was rush hour, a mere 10 days from Christmas, when tragedy struck the small town of Point Pleasant, W.Va., 54 years ago today on Dec. 15.
The Silver Bridge - the key connection between Point Pleasant and Gallipolis, Ohio - collapsed into the Ohio River. Thirty-one vehicles plunged into the icy depths of the Ohio River.
Accompanying this story is video pulled from the West Virginia State Archives of the special Eyewitness News ran in 1992 on the 25th anniversary of the tragedy.
You hear from a man who fell into the river from the bridge, and the man who saved him. It also includes an interview with the first witness to report the collapse, and the patrol trooper who responded to that call that dark winter night. See story at WCHS-TV: https://bit.ly/3oX6vXh

Silver Bridge Collapse Point Pleasant, West Virginia - Failure Analysis of Mechanical Systems

SILVER BRIDGE DISASTER Point Pleasant, Mason County, West Virginia, United States
The Incident - On 15th of December 1967
- In the rush hour traffic time
- Bridge fails in less than a minute
- With lost of 46 lives
Main reason was pour design of the bridge.
The eye-bars in the Silver Bridge were not redundant, as links were composed of only two bars each, of high-strength steel (more than twice the tensile strength of common mild steel), rather than a thick stack of thinner bars of modest material strength "combed" together, as is usual for redundancy. With only two bars, the failure of one could impose excessive loading on the second, causing total failure which would be unlikely if more bars were used. While ...

The Silver Bridge Disaster | The worst bridge collapse in US history
The Silver Bridge was a suspension bridge with eyebars and chains that was built in 1928 and named after the colour of its aluminium paint. The bridge connected Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio, by crossing the Ohio River.
The Silver Bridge collapsed on December15,1967, due to the weight of rush-hour traffic, killing 46 people. The bodies of two of the victims were never discovered. The failure of a single eyebar in a suspension chain, due to a small defect 0.1 inches (2.5 mm) deep, was determined to be the cause of the collapse.
The bridge was carrying much heavier loads than it was designed for and had been poorly maintained, according to the analysis. The Silver Memorial Bridge, which was completed in1969, replaced the collapsed bridge.

The Silver Bridge Collapse.
The Silver Bridge connecting Point Pleasant WV and Gallopolis Ohio was opened in 1928. This was the worlds first bridge painted with aluminum paint, which gave it a very shiny appearance. The bridge collapsed in 1967 due to a flaw from the very start. It was held together like a "bicycle chain", in that if one link failed, the entire structure would collapse.

BMech Black Box
While a low-redundancy chain can be engineered to the design requirements, the safety is completely dependent upon correct, high-quality manufacturing, assembly, and maintenance.
