Carly Elisabeth Simon (born June 25, 1945) is an American singer-songwriter, musician and children's author. She first rose to fame in the 1970s with a string of hit records; her 13 Top 40 U.S. hits include "Anticipation" (No. 13), "You Belong To Me" (No. 6), "Coming Around Again" (No. 18), and her four Gold certified singles "Jesse" (No. 11), "Mockingbird" (No. 5), a duet with James Taylor, "You're So Vain" (No. 1), and "Nobody Does It Better" (No. 2) from the 1977 James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me.
After a brief stint with her sister Lucy Simon as duo group the Simon Sisters, she found great success as a solo artist with her 1971 self-titled debut album Carly Simon, which won her the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and spawned her first Top 10 single "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be". Simon achieved international fame with her third album No Secrets which sat firmly at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for 5 weeks, and spawned the worldwide hit "You're So Vain", for which she received three Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Over the course of her career, Simon has amassed 24 Billboard Hot 100 charting singles, 28 Billboard Adult Contemporary charting singles, and has won two Grammy Awards. AllMusic called Simon, "One of the quintessential singer/songwriters of the '70s". Simon has a contralto vocal range.
Carly Simon is singer-songwriter Carly Simon's self-titled debut/studio album, released in February 1971. The album was released by Elektra Records and produced by Eddie Kramer, who had previously worked with Joe Cocker and Jimi Hendrix.
The album included her first big hit, "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be", a sombre ballad centered on a woman pondering marriage with a sense of both inevitability and entrapment. Simon wrote the music and her friend and frequent collaborator Jacob Brackman wrote the lyrics.
Carly Simon was mostly well received by critics when released. Timothy Crouse, writing in Rolling Stone, stated "Carly's voice perfectly matches her material" and her "...superbly controlled voice is complemented by deft arrangements." Robert Christgau was not as pleased. Grading the album a C-, he wrote "I suppose it makes sense not only for the privileged to inflict their sensibilities on us, but for many of us to dig it." In more recent years, William Ruhlmann, writing for Allmusic, gave the album a three and a half star rating out of a possible five, and stated "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" and "Dan, My Fling", were the stand-out tracks.
"The Right Thing to Do" is a song written and performed by Carly Simon that first appeared on her 1972 album No Secrets. It was released as the second single to the album, following "You're So Vain" and reached #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart. It also reached #20 on the Canada Top Singles chart and #9 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart. It reached #17 in the UK.
"The Right Thing to Do" is a love song directed to Simon's then husband James Taylor. Simon has stated that "it was actually one of my absolutely undisputed songs about James, written three months into our relationship." Author Sheila Weller notes that the song is both romantic and realistic about the relationship. She shows the romanticism by disregarding her lover's problems but realistic in recognizing "her fading value in the sex-and-love marketplace." To Weller, the latter is displayed in the lines:
Simon acknowledged that Taylor helped "with a lot of the changes" after she had written the original lyrics and music. Taylor claimed that told Simon that he liked everything except the original third verse, and Simon replaced that verse, and Taylor said that he likes that one. Simon got the line "loving you is the right thing to do" from the movie The Last Picture Show.Allmusic critic Joe Viglione and Billboard Magazine both praised the song's production by producer Richard Perry. Viglione also comments on Simon's "heartfelt" vocal performance. Simon accompanies herself on piano, and other instrumentation includes bass guitar, drums, congas, horns and strings. Vicki Brown and Liza Strike also provide backing vocals.Billboard considered the "light horn backing" to be particularly effective in making the song catchy.
[I RECOMMEND LISTENING TO THIS WITH HEADPHONES] I just realized this is probably the first time that most of you get to see what I look like in one of my videos after all this voice acting stuff XD Anyway, back in the day, I wanted to be a music performance major and took a butt load of music lessons, collected a couple more, and then found out I had arthritis and had to rethink my life. (So I picked voice acting instead: LOGIC.) Despite that, I still love music and have always wanted to do more with it especially in terms of composing. I don't know how much I'll do of this sort, but I wanted to see what the process would be like on a theme I threw together a while ago. Eventually I'll write a longer than 20 second demo version of this, but it's all I had and made for a good test. Also, ...

I'll take some of this, I'll have some of that
And several more of these
Now that I see it, I know what I like
So I'll like it if you please
I ain't nobody's princess, stuck in Sunday School
So I'll help myself to love
And have the whole career
Don't wrap it up, I'll eat it here
Just look at you now, the ultimate guy
Class and wit and style
Once I might have pretended, to be someone else
Attracting you with guile
But now I'm not about to dress up, in some other woman's shoes
I've got nothing to lose
So I'll help myself to love,
Gather round and cheer
Don't wrap it up, I'll eat it here
I've stood there patiently waiting in line
A take-out man's an O.K. plan
If you've got lots of time
Especially if he's biodegradable
I ain't nobody's princess
I ain't nobody's fool
So I'll help myself to love
There's nothing more to fear
Don't wrap it up, I'll eat it here
