A member of one house will not usually refer directly to the other, but refer to it indirectly using the phrase 'another place', or 'the other place'. So for example, a member of the Canadian Senate would not mention 'the House of Commons', but would use the phrase 'the other place'.
The tradition does not extend to business (such as speeches and interviews) conducted outside the house, and is generally dropped when a debate is directly addressing the nature of the other house, such as in debates on reform of the House of Lords in the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
The reasons for the tradition are unclear, but it has been suggested that it dates back to a period of ill-feeling between the two houses of the UK Parliament. Similarly a member talking of their own house would refer to it as 'this place'.
The Bartimaeus Sequence is a series of children's novels of alternate history, fantasy and magic reminiscent of the Harry Potter series but much darker in tone. It was written by Jonathan Stroud and consists of a trilogy published from 2003 to 2005 and a prequel novel published in 2010. The eponymous character, Bartimaeus, is a five-thousand-year-old djinni, a spirit of approximately mid-level power. The story follows the career of a teenage magician Nathaniel and Bartimaeus, whom he has summoned and nominally controls through the alternative history of the peak of London's domination as a magical oligarchy.
Setting
The novels are set in London in an alternate history, though many countries, cities, events and people are from actual history (such as Prague, Solomon, the Holy Roman Empire, William Ewart Gladstone, Benjamin Disraeli, the American Revolution, etc.). The books presume the idea that magic, magicians and demons have been active throughout history, radically altering it. In particular these changes are reflected in the contrast between modern aspects (such as electricity and cars) and older ones (colonial-era weapons including muskets). The current time is never directly stated. The books incorporate references to various world mythologies and folklore, such as the Arabian Nights and Homer.
It's a seemingly idyllic summer in 1935, and identical twins Niles and Holland Perry play around the bucolic family farm. Holland is an amoral mischief maker, though sympathetic Niles is often caught in their shenanigans. Niles carries a Prince Albert tobacco tin with him containing several secret trinkets, including something mysteriously wrapped in blue wax paper, and the Perry family ring, which had been handed down from their grandfather, through their father, to Holland, the older twin. Niles asks Holland to confirm that the ring is now indeed his. "Cripes yes, I gave it to you," is the response. Niles asks Holland to take the ring and the wrapped object back, but Holland insists "I gave them to you, they're yours now." Their obnoxious cousin Russell, whom the boys call "Piggy Lookadoo" behind his back, finds them in the apple cellar below the barn—a place they are not supposed to play—and happens to see the contents of the tobacco tin, including the ring. Russell cryptically states that the ring was supposed to be buried, and promises to "tell on" Niles to his father, Niles' Uncle George. Uncle George padlocks the door to the apple cellar to keep the kids from playing there, but there is another stairway inside the barn, giving them access to the cellar.
The Other is the 1971 debut novel by Thomas Tryon. Set in 1935, the novel focuses on the sadistic relationship between two thirteen-year-old identical twin boys, one who is well-behaved, and the other, a sociopath who wreaks havoc on his family's rural New England farm property.
Tryon, who had been a working actor prior, retired from his Hollywood career to become a novelist. Upon its release, the novel received wide critical acclaim, and was adapted into a 1972 film of the same name starring Uta Hagen. The novel was reprinted in a commemorative edition in 2012 by New York Review Books with an afterword by Dan Chaon.
The Other is a Germanhorror punk band. It is considered the most prominent example of the horror punk genre in Europe.
History
The Other was founded in 2002 in Leichlingen, Germany. Rod Usher, Sarge von Rock, Dr. Caligari and Andy Only started out as a Misfitscover band under the name Ghouls in 1999. The Other made a name for themselves soon after their foundation, especially due to their outfits, which are inspired by old horror movies. Punk and deathrock fans appreciated the band's sound, which can be called a mixture of punk, deathrock, rockabilly, and metal. Their contribution to the compilation This is Horrorpunk created worldwide attention, and after the release of the debut album They're Alive The Other supported bands such as the Misfits, Wednesday 13, Balzac, and The 69 Eyes. The second album, We Are Who We Eat, was released in 2006 and confirmed the status of the band. Two European tours and gigs with Bela B., Wednesday 13, and The Meteors, as well as many festivals, followed. The Other played their first US-Tour consisting of only selected dates on the West-Coast in January 2007. The tour was considered a success and the band managed to sell out shows at the Key Club in Hollywood, CA or the Showcaste Theatre in Corona, CA and draw many fans to other shows in California, Arizona and Nevada.
