"The One That Got Away" is the 24th episode of the second season of the American comedy television series, Modern Family, and the 48th episode overall. It's the last episode of season 2. It was originally aired on May 25, 2011. The episode was directed by Jim Bagdonas and was written by Paul Corrigan, Brad Walsh & Dan O'Shannon.
Plot
It is Jay's (Ed O'Neill) birthday and all he desires is to have a quiet birthday while fishing on the lake, but the family misinterpret him as wanting a big celebration. In their frantic scramble to put everything together, all they manage to do is to ruin Jay's day who ends up not going fishing.
Claire (Julie Bowen) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) want to make a special gift to their dad; recreate a photo of the two of them while they were kids. They dressed up the way they were on the photo (Mitchell is dressed up as a sailor) and they go to their childhood home to take the picture. When they get there, no one is at home so they decide to climb the fence, take the picture and go. While trying to take the picture, the dog of the owners' sees them and they wind up trapped in the back yard. They end up calling Jay to come and help them.
"The One That Got Away" is a song written by Nathan Winkler (Co-written by Natasha Bedingfield, Steve Kipner, Andrew Frampton and Michael Tafaro) for Bedingfield's 2005 North American debut album Unwritten. The song, backed by remixes by Wamdue and Valentin, was released as a promotional single in the United States in May 2006. The song was released in the United Kingdom as a b-side to "These Words".
Backstory: The original writer, Nathan Winkler went to a talent show/music event and was mesmerised by the MC for the evening. He went home that Friday night and couldn't sleep, so he put his thoughts into words. In the album version the narrator falls in love with someone she has only just seen, but is too nervous to make a move. She hopes the stranger will respond as well and "meet [her] in the middle." The demo of the song was given to the girl that the song was written for, but they never met.

The One that Got Away (48 Hour Flick Fest Entry)
This was our entry for the 48 Hour Flickfest. We handed it in about 40 minutes late and were disqualified for it. The ideas are there even if the execution isn't.
We ended up watching five episodes of Modern Family Friday night when we were supposed to write it. By about 3:00am we had a list of gags and a plan (though no script or dialogue). Saturday morning we got the props (and the Late Pinchy, whose big scene was accidentally taped over... you were right about reviewing shots Marie). Saturday night we started filming at 11:00pm (because I lacked the foresight to book the night off work), and finished around 3:00am. We woke up around 10:00 the next morning and ate then started editing. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to do it all right, and despite having everything ready, a...

Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to do it all right, and despite having everything ready, a massive oversight by me in editing put us past the deadline. Still we're proud of our work, like parents who are proud of their very dumb child who actually passes classes in school. We worked hard, had a lot of fun, and the movie is actually pretty funny. (to us at least). And we have the consolation of knowing we are by far not the worst movie that was submitted.
Thanks to Marie for being a good sport, and helping improvise everything. And her name is spelled with two "N"s. That's another editing error. And congratulations to Smog Town Pictures for winning best flick, and pretty well every other award available. Can't wait to see Moonlight Sonata.
