Bravo Two Zero is a 1999 two-hour televisionminiseries (broadcast in two parts between 3 and 4 January in the UK), based on the book of the same name by Andy McNab. The film covers real life events – from the perspective of Andy McNab, patrol commander of Bravo Two Zero, a British SAS patrol, tasked to find IraqiScud missile launchers during the Gulf War in 1991. The names of the patrol members killed were changed.
A previous film about the patrol, The One That Got Away, based on the book of the same name by Chris Ryan, was broadcast in 1996.
Bravo Two Zero was the call sign of an eight-man British ArmySAS patrol, deployed into Iraq during the First Gulf War in January 1991. According to Chris Ryan's account, the patrol were given the task of gathering intelligence, finding a good lying-up position (LUP) and setting up an observation post (OP) on the Iraqi Main Supply Route (MSR) between Baghdad and North-Western Iraq, while according to another, the task was to find and destroy Iraqi Scud missile launchers along a 250km (160mi) stretch of the MSR.
The patrol was the subject of several books. Accounts in the first two books, one by patrol commander Steven Mitchell (writing under the pseudonym Andy McNab), Bravo Two Zero (1993) the other by Colin Armstrong, writing under the pseudonym Chris Ryan – The One That Got Away (1995) as well as those by the SAS's RSM at the time of the patrol, Peter Ratcliffe (Eye of the Storm, 2000), did not always correspond, leading to accusations from the media of lying. The investigative book The Real Bravo Two Zero (2002) by Michael Asher followed the patrol route and interviewed witnesses. The subsequent book, Soldier Five by patrol member Mike Coburn, was released in 2004. For Mitchell's conduct during the patrol, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, whilst Armstrong, and two other patrol members (Steven Lane and Robert Consiglio) were awarded the Military Medal.
Bravo Two Zero is a 1993 book written under the pseudonym 'Andy McNab'. The book recounts the story of an SAS patrol behind enemy lines in Iraq, in 1991, which was led by the author and included another writer, 'Chris Ryan'.
Controversy
The content of the book was criticised by fellow Bravo Two Zero patrol member, Malcolm MacGown, who stated "incidents such as teeth extraction and burning with a heated spoon did not happen. It is inconceivable that any such incidents could have occurred without them being discussed or being physically obvious".
Michael Asher's investigative book, The Real Bravo Two Zero criticised McNab's estimation of the number of soldiers the patrol encountered. According to Asher, the patrol never actually encountered soldiers, only police and armed civilians.
According to the book, at one stage, the patrol evicted all occupants from a taxi and drove until they reached a military checkpoint, where Lane shot and killed one soldier, while the others in the group killed two more. According to patrol member Chris Ryan's second-hand account (presumably taken from the Regimental debrief), the group were actually driven to a police checkpoint by one of the Iraqi occupants of the taxi. They discreetly exited the vehicle with plans to rendezvous on the other side of the checkpoint, but the driver alerted the police, and the group were forced to continue on foot. Asher's investigation supported Ryan's version of events with no reported soldiers, no reported armed contact, and no reported Iraqi casualties.
Bravo Two Zero was the call sign of an eight-man British Army Special Air Service patrol, deployed into Iraq during the First Gulf War in January 1991.

This is a scene from Bravo Two Zero that I've always thought was pretty awesome and clearly demonstrates the use of pepperpotting in a combat situation. Pepperpotting is when part of the squad give covering fire whilst the rest run forward, stop, begin firing themselves and then the previous members of the squad that were firing then move forward themselves.
If you like this sort of thing I highly reccomend you get this film, it's bluddy awesome even after all these years ;o)

Top brass were also alarmed at apparent plans for a book and a film about the Africa mission and the man's friendship with Ryan, who launched a literary and film career after the Bravo Two Zero mission in the 1991 Gulf War in Iraq.
The bestselling author and former soldier, who commanded the Bravo Two Zero patrol during the First Gulf War, said he had an ability to 'kill people and not worry about it too much' - something that could be useful on the battlefield.
