The regiment originated in 1910 with the creation of the 103rd Regiment (Calgary Rifles).
History 1914–1938
In 1936, The Calgary Regiment was one of six infantry regiments designated to become a tank unit, being renamed Calgary Regiment (Tank).
History 1939–1945
On 16 February 1941 the 14th Army Tank Battalion (Calgary Regiment) was mobilized at Mewata Barracks. When the Canadian Armoured Corps was created, the Calgary Regiment lost its status as an infantry regiment and transferred to the new corps. A reserve regiment remained in Calgary. The regiment was composed of 400 members of the reserve battalion, drawing also from reinforcement personnel from the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada and the Loyal Edmonton Regiment. The original 'A' Squadron was drawn from Olds and district, 'B' Squadron from Stettler area, 'C' Squadron from Red Deer, and Headquarters from Calgary, High River, and Okotoks district.
The King's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster) was a lineinfantryregiment of the British Army. It served under various titles and fought in many wars and conflicts, including both the First and Second World Wars, from 1680 to 1959.
The regiment was raised on 13 July 1680, as the 2nd Tangier, or Earl of Plymouth's Regiment of Foot. It saw service for nearly three centuries. In 1751, after various name changes, the regiment was titled the 4th (King's Own) Regiment of Foot.
The 53rd Regiment of Foot was raised in Leeds in 1755 and renumbered the 51st in January 1757. In 1782, in common with other regiments of the line, the 51st was given a "county" designation, becoming the 51st (2nd Yorkshire, West Riding) Regiment of Foot. The title of Light Infantry was given in honour of its former commander General Sir John Moore in 1809, and in 1821 the regiment was given royal status when King's Own was added to its title, becoming the 51st (2nd Yorkshire, West Riding, The King's Own Light Infantry) Regiment.
The economy of Calgary includes activity in the energy, financial services, film and television, transportation and logistics, technology, manufacturing, aerospace, health and wellness, retail, and tourism sectors. The Calgary CMA is home to the second-highest number of corporate head offices in Canada among the country's 800 largest corporations.
Over the summers, the King’s Own Calgary Regiment, and other Primary Reserve armoured units across 3rd Division (including the South Alberta Light Horse, Fort Garry Horse, the Saskatchewan Dragoons, British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught's Own), and British Columbia Dragoons) convene together at CMTC Wainwright to train new armoured crewmembers. The Rank Qualification Trooper course is designed to teach new armoured crewmembers on armoured cavalry tactics and doctrine. This includes mounted and dismounted navigation, patrolling, recognising armoured fighting vehicles and aircraft, employing weapon systems such as the C6 General Purpose Machine Gun, and utilising armoured platforms to adopt fighting position while maneuvering within cover to engage and destroy the enemy.
