The Hooters are an Americanrock band from Philadelphia. They combined elements of rock and folk music to create their sound. The Hooters first gained major commercial success in the United States in the mid-1980s due to heavy radio airplay and MTV rotation of several songs including "All You Zombies", "Day by Day", "And We Danced" and "Where Do the Children Go". They opened the Philadelphia portion of the Live Aid benefit concert in 1985.
During the late 1980s and 1990s, The Hooters found significant commercial success internationally, especially in Europe, where they played at The Wall Concert in Berlin in 1990, before they went on hiatus in 1995.
Since reuniting in 2001, The Hooters have staged successful tours in Europe and 2007 saw the release of their first album of new material since 1993, Time Stand Still.
Career
Early years (1980–1984)
The Hooters were formed by Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian in 1980 and played their first show on July 4 of that year. They took their name from a nickname for the melodica, a type of keyboard harmonica which is German in origin, created by Hohner. A friend of Eric Bazilian lent Rob Hyman a Hohner model Piano-36 which was used on their recordings, and never returned to the friend. Rob and Eric met in 1971 at the University of Pennsylvania and had played in a band in the late 1970s, based in Philadelphia, called Baby Grand, which also featured local singer, David Kagan. Baby Grand released two albums on Arista Records. In addition, producer/friend of the band Rick Chertoff also had a significant role during these album sessions, and he would later produce several Hooters albums as well.
The story involves a number of paradoxes caused by time travel. In 1980, it was nominated for the Balrog Award for short fiction.
"'—All You Zombies—'" further develops themes explored by the author in a previous work: "By His Bootstraps", published some 18 years earlier. Some of the same elements also appear later in The Cat Who Walks Through Walls (1985), including the Circle of Ouroboros and the Temporal Corps.
Plot
"'—All You Zombies—'" chronicles a young man (later revealed to be intersex) taken back in time and tricked into impregnating his younger, female self (before he underwent sexual reassignment surgery); he thus turns out to be the offspring of that union, with the paradoxical result that he is his own mother and father. As the story unfolds, all the major characters are revealed to be the same person, at different stages of her/his life.
"All You Zombies" is a song by The Hooters. It was first recorded live and released as a single in 1982. It was subsequently included on the band's debut album Amore (1983) and an extended version of the song was included on their second album Nervous Night (1985). This version was released as a single in 1985. The song reached #3 on the Mainstream Rock and #58 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985.
Recording history
The Hooters first released a single of "All You Zombies" recorded live at the Emerald City nightclub on April 11, 1981.
A different version of the song later appeared on the Amore album released independently in 1983. Hyman and Bazilian worked with Cyndi Lauper on the She's So Unusual album leading to Columbia Records offering the band a contract. They released "All You Zombies" with additional instrumental sections making the song almost six minutes long. It became a hit reaching the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and top 10 in Australia.
The band performed the song at the Live Aid benefit concert in Philadelphia, on July 13, 1985.

Holy Moses met the Pharaoh Yeah, he tried to set him straight Looked him in the eye, "let my people go" Holy Moses on the mountain High above the golden calf Went to get the Ten Commandments He's just gonna break them in half All you zombies hide your faces All you people in the street All you sittin' in high places The pieces gonna fall on you No one ever spoke to Noah They all laughed at him instead Working on his ark, working all by himself Only Noah saw it coming Forty days and forty nights Took his sons and daughters with him Yeah, they were the Israelites All you zombies hide your faces All you people in the street All you sittin' in high places The rain's gonna fall on you Holy Father, what's the matter Where have all your children gone Sitting in the dark, living all by themselves You don't have to hide anymore All you zombies show your faces...
