A death squad is an armed group that conducts extrajudicial killings or forced disappearances of persons for the purposes of political repression, genocide, or revolutionary terror. These killings are often conducted in ways meant to ensure the secrecy of the killers' identities. Death squads may have the support of domestic or foreign governments (see state terrorism). They may comprise a secret police force, paramilitary groups, government soldiers, policemen, or combinations thereof. They may also be organized as vigilantes. When death squads are not controlled by the state, they may consist of insurgent forces or organized crime.
Historically, the origins of what are modernly known as 'death squads' goes back many decades to the Bolshevik Cheka as a part of the Red Terror in Russia. The Cheka were initially a party organization and later were given official powers and authority for extrajudicial secret arrest, internment, and execution. They ultimately institutionailized the practices into the Gulag system. Later the 'Einsatzgruppen' used by Nazi Germany as a part of the Holocaust. The Nazi squads, composed of police officers mixed in with other agents, killed Jewish civilians and political opponents, going through captured territory that the regular German army had previously taken.
Einsatzgruppen (German for "task forces", "deployment groups"; singular Einsatzgruppe; official full name Einsatzgruppen der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD) were Schutzstaffel (SS) paramilitary death squads of Nazi Germany that were responsible for mass killings, primarily by shooting, during World War II. The Einsatzgruppen were involved in the murder of much of the intelligentsia and cultural elite of Poland, and had an integral role in the implementation of the Final Solution of the Jewish question (Die Endlösung der Judenfrage) in territories conquered by Nazi Germany. Almost all of the people they killed were civilians, beginning with the intelligentsia and swiftly progressing to Soviet political commissars, Jews, and Gypsies throughout Eastern Europe.
Under the direction of Reichsführer-SSHeinrich Himmler and the supervision of SS-ObergruppenführerReinhard Heydrich, the Einsatzgruppen operated in territories occupied by the German armed forces following the invasion of Poland in September 1939 and Operation Barbarossa (the invasion of the Soviet Union) in June 1941. The Einsatzgruppen worked hand-in-hand with the Orpo Police Battalions on the Eastern Front to carry out operations ranging from the murder of a few people to operations which lasted over two or more days, such as the massacre at Babi Yar with 33,771 Jews killed in two days, and the Rumbula massacre (with about 25,000 killed in two days of shooting). As ordered by Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, the Wehrmacht cooperated with the Einsatzgruppen and provided logistical support for their operations. Historian Raul Hilberg estimates that between 1941 and 1945 the Einsatzgruppen and related auxiliary troops killed more than two million people, including 1.3 million Jews. The total number of Jews murdered during the Holocaust is estimated at 5.5 to 6 million people.
Einsatzgruppen, The Nazi Death Squad (WWII Documentary)
The armies of the Adolph Hitler's Third Reich invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941 at the height of World War II. Mobile commandos, the Einsatzgruppen, followed their advance to Stalingrad with the mission of eliminating all Jewish people on the conquered territories. From June 1941 and the end of 1943, these Nazi groups killed close to two million Jews from the Baltic countries to the Black Sea.

They massacred men, women and children and were known for murdering thousands each day. Two of the largest Einsatzgruppen massacres were the Babi Yar and the Rumbula massacre, in which dozens of thousands were killed in just a couple of days. They were despicable in their crimes, but after the Second World War very few members of the group were ever brought to justice.
The Einsatzgruppen trial brought a number of key members of the death squads to justice, however out of the thousands of men who committed massacres inside the group only a handful were ever executed for their crimes. This is seen as a huge injustice as those men who shot thousands escaped World War 2 with no punishment whatsoever. The Einsatzgruppen were a truly disturbing and shocking part of Hitler's Third Reich and mission to exterminate those groups he despised.

Music: Brian, Lyrics: Tony Lights are shining at their brightest to take my life away. Pull me further in. Will I see another day? Pull me in... Killing is my fucking name... Killing is my name Don't wake up. Don't wake up. Feeling is the same when you're dead, locked up, gone... I know I'm wrong for what I did. I can feel you in my skin Death squads coming, riots brewing... Angels falling from the sky bringing plague with blood red eyes. Fight the fire, blazing battles, double clip loaded. I am animal... Crash down barriers. Emptiness is filling up. Terror fueled hysteria...
