The Covered Wagon is a 1923 American silentWesternfilm released by Paramount Pictures. The film was directed by James Cruze based on a novel by Emerson Hough about a group of pioneers traveling through the old West from Kansas to Oregon. J. Warren Kerrigan starred as Will Banion and Lois Wilson as Molly Wingate. On their quest they experience desert heat, mountain snow, hunger, and Indian attack.
Tim McCoy, as Technical Advisor, recruited the Indians who appeared in this movie.
Production
The film was a major production for its time, with an estimate budget of $782,000.
In his 1983 book Classics of the Silent Cinema, radio and TV host Joe Franklin claimed this film was "the first American epic not directed by Griffith".
Emerson Hough (1857–1923) was an American author best known for writing western stories and historical novels.
Career
Hough was born in Newton, Iowa on June 28, 1857. He was in Newton High School's first graduating class of three in 1875. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1880 and later studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1882. His first article, "Far From The Madding Crowd," was published in Forest and Stream in 1882.
He moved to White Oaks, New Mexico, practiced law there, and wrote for the White Oaks newspaper Golden Era for a year and a half, returning to Iowa when his mother was ill. He later wrote a novel, Story of the Outlaw, a study of the western desperado, which included profiles of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett. Hough moved to New Mexico after Garrett shot Billy the Kid, and he became a friend of Garrett. He wrote for various newspapers in Des Moines, Iowa, Sandusky, Ohio,
Chicago, Illinois, St. Louis, Missouri, and Wichita, Kansas. In 1889 he got a position as western editor of Forest and Stream, editing the "Chicago and the West" column. He was hired by George Bird Grinnell, the owner of Field and Stream, who founded the Audubon Society in 1886 which, along with Theodore Roosevelt's Boone and Crockett Club, was a leader in the conservation movement.
The Covered wagon was long the dominant form of transport in pre-industrial America. With roots in the heavy Conestoga wagon developed for the rough, undeveloped roads and paths of the colonial East, the covered wagon spread west with American migration. Heavily relied upon along such travel routes as the Great Wagon Road and the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails, it carried settlers seeking land, gold, and new futures ever further west.
With its ubiquitous exposure in 20th century media, the covered wagon grew to become an icon of the American West. The fanciful nickname Prairie Schooner and romantic depiction in wagon trains only served to embellish the legend.
History
In Colonial times the Conestoga wagon was popular for migration southward through the Great Appalachian Valley along the Great Wagon Road. After the American Revolution it was used to open up commerce to Pittsburgh and Ohio. The Conestoga, often in long wagon trains, was the primary overland cargo vehicle over the Appalachian Mountains until the development of the railroad. The wagon was pulled by a team of up to eight horses or up to a dozen oxen. For this purpose, the Conestoga horse, a special breed of medium to heavy draft horses, was developed.
Covered Wagon, also known as Oregon Trail Immigrants Memorial and Pioneer Family, is an outdoor 1934 white marble sculpture by Leo Friedlander installed outside the Oregon State Capitol in Salem, Oregon, United States.
Description and history
Leo Friedlander's Covered Wagon (1934) is a high relief carving depicting a pioneer family in front of a covered wagon, located outside the Oregon State Capitol's main entrance. The figure group includes a father, mother and young boy, plus a horse. The father faces westward with his proper right hand shielding his eyes from the sun, while the mother is shown kneeling and facing forward. The white marble sculpture, carved from a block made of six smaller pieces, measures approximately 152 inches (3.9m) x 18.5 feet (5.6m) x 91 inches (2.3m) and rests on a granite base that measures approximately 67 inches (1.7m) x 19.5 feet (5.9m) x 90 inches (2.3m). On the back is a map illustrating the area covered by the Oregon Trail and depictions of pioneer life. The installation also includes a signed inscription that reads: LEO FRIEDLANDER SC VALIANT MEN HAVE THRUST OUR FRONTIERS TO THE SETTING SUN.

The Real Reason People Rarely Rode In Wagons On The Oregon Trail
Exploration. Expansion. Onward into the sunset. The Oregon Trail might not have the prettiest history at all times, but it's history nonetheless, and historians have spent lifetimes piecing together all the details of life on that dusty avenue. The Oregon Trail stretches over 2,000 miles, a journey that took months for even the best-equipped pioneers. One indispensable piece of equipment? The wagon. Pack your kids, pack your mother-in-law, and hit the road, right? Well, it turns out it wasn't quite that easy. In fact, for all those wagons crossing the country, very few people actually rode in them. Here's the real reason people rarely rode in wagons on the Oregon Trail.

Reviews:
"Highly entertaining and influential Western about a large wagon train that starts off in the Midwest and plans to head out West and up into Oregon. Along the way there are various internal battles as well as dangerous issues with Indians as well as other problems with their journey.
One could watch THE COVERED WAGON today and say that it doesn't have anything original to it but they would be missing the point. This was a very original movie when it was originally released and it has been copied so many times since 1923 that some people might forget or just overlook the fact that the rules were formed here for all future Westerns. There are certainly some flaws in the film but at the same time there's no question that this is a highly entertaining movie and one that works on many levels.
As I said, the film is basically about this large wagon train heading out West and we see the various problems that happen on the journey. This includes a love triangle between the three main characters. You've got the good guy Will (J. Warren Kerrigan), the bad guy Sam (Alan Hale) and then there's Molly (Lois Wilson) who both want. This leads to some very fun scenes including an extended fight sequence that was perfectly directed by James Cruze. You've also got some other great action including a river crossing, a buffalo hunt and a sequence where the wagons are attacked by Indians.
There are some flaws with the film including Kerrigan not being that strong as the lead. I thought he gave a fine performance and I thought he was good to watch but at the same time I think the film would have benefited from a stronger lead. Hale was wonderful as the villain and Wilson was cute enough for what she was asked to do. The film featured some very good cinematography and I'd also argue that the editing itself was good. The locations were great and while the story itself wasn't the strongest, it was at least good enough to hold your attention throughout.
THE COVERED WAGON is certainly a landmark Western and one that influenced everything that was to follow. The movie isn't perfect but it's about as entertaining as you can get."-Written by Michael_Elliott on IMDb.com

Exploration. Expansion. Onward into the sunset. The Oregon Trail might not have the prettiest history at all times, but it's history nonetheless, and historians have spent lifetimes piecing together all the details of life on that dusty avenue.
