The Capital of the Susquehannock; Journals of John Smith & Company 1608 - Fortified city / Mounds
Howdy,
In today’s video(s) we will discuss the Ancient Kingdom of the Susquehannock. In a previous video we looked at Wright’s Ferry, and the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Today we will take the history back even further, as I will dive into journal entries dated from 1608 through the mid 1700’s, discussing the lost capital city of the Susquehannock, themselves an indigenous people who resided primarily in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, and other areas of the Susquehanna River.

Susquehannock Part II - Ties to Giants/Mounds, Farming In Lancaster, Construction Deals, Paxton Boys
Welcome back for Part II, as we read through some early accounts of the Susquehannock and their impact on Lancaster County as written in journal entries and letters from the 1600’s and 1700’s. Continuing straight away, we see the impact of the Susquehannock as superior farmers, as well as skilled architects.
We will discuss the techniques and rituals which the Susquehannock applied to their skin, as well as journals regarding an agreement between The Maryland Colony and the Susquehannocks, which paved the way for the Susquehannocks to help construct many cities and towns in and around Maryland and Pennsylvania.
We will also discuss the fall of the Susquehannocks, and the apparent loss of their capital city on the coasts of Lancaster. Enjoy, and please stay positive! Leave all thoughts ...

The Susquehannock People, also called the Conestoga, by the English, are Iroquoian-speaking Indigenous People, who lived in areas adjacent to the Susquehanna River and its tributaries.., ranging from its upper reaches in the southern part of what is now New York, (near the lands of the Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy), through eastern and central Pennsylvania, West of the Poconos and the upper Delaware River (and the Delaware Nations), with lands extending beyond the mouth of the Susquehanna, in Maryland, along the west bank of the Potomac at the north end of the Chesapeake Bay.
Evidence of the The Susquehannock People has also been found in northern West Virginia and portions of southwestern Pennsylvania, which could be reached, via the gaps of the Allegheny or, several counties to the south, via the Cumberland Narrows pass which held the Nemacolin Trail.
Both passes abutted their range and could be reached through connecting valleys from the West Branch Susquehanna and their large settlement at Conestoga, Pennsylvania.
“Susquehannock” is said to be an Algonquian/Algonkin term for:
“People of the Muddy River.”

A premier Pennsylvania trail and a long one to boot. Join me as I walk the 84 mile STS solo deep into the fall foliage of God’s Country. This 5 day trip is a great way to advance out of the weekend warrior camping trips and dive into the world of long distance backpacking. Shelters are set up along the STS as well as a State Park visit and a small town stop in Crossfork. Sprinkle in some decent primitive campsite selections and you have a great adventure waiting for you.
