Susquehannock

The Susquehannock people, also called the Conestoga (by the English) were Iroquoian-speaking Native Americans who lived in areas adjacent to the Susquehanna River and its tributaries from its upper reaches in the southern part of what is now New York (and the lands of the Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy), through East-central and central Pennsylvania (West of the Poconos and the Delaware nations), with lands extending beyond the mouth of the Susquehanna in Maryland along the west bank of the Potomac at the north end of the Chesapeake Bay. Evidence of their habitation has also been found in West Virginia. The Cumberland Narrows pass, later called the Nemacolin Trail, abutted their range and it was likely navigable through valleys from their large settlement at Conestoga, Pennsylvania.

Names and endonym

As Europeans penetrated the interior from the coastal areas dominated by Algonquian-speaking tribes, they usually learned the names of new tribes by what the first groups called them. The Europeans adapted or transliterated these names according to their own languages and spelling systems, trying to capture the sounds of the names. In their own language, the Susquehannock identified as the Andaste, which is the most likely endonym. The exact pronunciation was likely some similar sequence of phonemes which referred to their palisade-style of construction.

Conestoga (rocket)

The Conestoga was a launch vehicle design funded by Space Services Inc. of America (SSIA) of Houston, Texas. Conestoga originally consisted of surplus LGM-30 Minuteman stages with additional strap-on boosters, as required for larger payloads. It was the world's first privately funded commercial rocket, but was launched only three times (once as a modified design) before the program was shut down.

Percheron

SSIA had originally intended to use a design by Gary Hudson, Percheron, which was intended to dramatically lower the price of space launches. Key to the design was a simple pressure-fed kerosene-oxidizer engine that was intended to reduce the cost of the expendable booster. Various loads could be accommodated by clustering the basic modules together. SSIA conducted an engine test firing of the Percheron on Matagorda Island on August 5, 1981, but the rocket exploded due to a malfunction. SSIA then asked Hudson to become head of R&D at SSIA, but because they wished to focus on solid fuel rockets, he declined.

Conestoga (ship)

The Conestoga was an iron-clad wooden steam freighter, 252 ft by 36 ft with a 16 ft hold, constructed in Cleveland by Quale & Son for the Anchor Line, of Erie, PA,and launched July 6th, 1878.

On May 22, 1922, while awaiting passage through the Galup Canal Lock 28 (Old Galop Canal), a fire started in her engine room. The ship was flushed away from the lock and drifted downstream, where it burned to its waterline and sank. There was no loss of life and its cargo of 30,000 bushels of wheat was salvaged.

The Conestoga is now a popular wreck dive where it sank in the Saint Lawrence River south of Cardinal, Ontario. It rests at a depth of 22-25 ft and is about 75 ft from shore. The upper portion of the steeple engine protrudes above the river, marking the site.

Horse

The horse (Equus ferus caballus) is one of two extant subspecies of Equus ferus. It is an odd-toed ungulate mammal belonging to the taxonomic family Equidae. The horse has evolved over the past 45 to 55 million years from a small multi-toed creature, Hyracotherium, into the large, single-toed animal of today. Humans began to domesticate horses around 4000 BC, and their domestication is believed to have been widespread by 3000 BC. Horses in the subspecies caballus are domesticated, although some domesticated populations live in the wild as feral horses. These feral populations are not true wild horses, as this term is used to describe horses that have never been domesticated, such as the endangered Przewalski's horse, a separate subspecies, and the only remaining true wild horse. There is an extensive, specialized vocabulary used to describe equine-related concepts, covering everything from anatomy to life stages, size, colors, markings, breeds, locomotion, and behavior.

Horses' anatomy enables them to make use of speed to escape predators and they have a well-developed sense of balance and a strong fight-or-flight response. Related to this need to flee from predators in the wild is an unusual trait: horses are able to sleep both standing up and lying down. Female horses, called mares, carry their young for approximately 11 months, and a young horse, called a foal, can stand and run shortly following birth. Most domesticated horses begin training under saddle or in harness between the ages of two and four. They reach full adult development by age five, and have an average lifespan of between 25 and 30 years.

Horse (1941 film)

Uma (馬, also known as Horse) is a 1941 black-and-white Japanese film directed by Kajiro Yamamoto and starring Hideko Takamine, whom Yamamoto had directed in his film Composition Class (Tsuzurikata Kyōshitsu) three years before. Uma was actually completed by assistant director Akira Kurosawa. It follows the story of Ine Onoda, the eldest daughter of a poor family of farmers, who raises a colt from birth and comes to love the horse dearly. When the horse is grown, the government orders it auctioned and sold to the army. Ine struggles to prevent the sale.

Overview

The film is a tale about a young girl and the colt she raises from its birth. But it is also about the struggle of farmers existing on the edge of poverty. Akira Kurosawa is credited as the film's production coordinator, which is equivalent to first assistant director. But Kurosawa's signature is all over this work and is the last film he was to work on as an assistant before starting his own directing career. The film took three years to plan and a year to film. Kajiro Yamamoto had to commute to the far mountainous location but had to turn his attention to his money making comedies in Tokyo and so he left production in the hands of his assistant, Kurosawa.

Howdy, In today’s video(s) we will discuss the Ancient Kingdom of the Susquehannock. In a previous video we looked at Wright’s Ferry, and the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Today we will take the history back even further, as I will dive into journal entries dated from 1608 through the mid 1700’s, discussing the lost capital city of the Susquehannock, themselves an indigenous people who resided primarily in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, and other areas of the Susquehanna River. They are said to have ties to the ancient mound builders, being of a substantial physical stature themselves, and their capital was a fortification of immense proportions which sat on the coasts of the Susquehanna River, near what is today Wrightsville, Pennsylvania. There are also videos in this channel for :"The Conestoga Massacre".. and many other Tribes.., Nations.., Peoples, Chiefs and Elders. ------------------------------------------------- The Susquehannock People, also called the Conestoga, by the English, are Iroquoian-speaking Indigenous People, who lived in areas adjacent to the Susquehanna River and its tributaries.., ranging from its upper reaches in the southern part of what is now New York, (near the lands of the Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy), through eastern and central Pennsylvania, West of the Poconos and the upper Delaware River (and the Delaware Nations), with lands extending beyond the mouth of the Susquehanna, in Maryland, along the west bank of the Potomac at the north end of the Chesapeake Bay. Evidence of the The Susquehannock People has also been found in northern West Virginia and portions of southwestern Pennsylvania, which could be reached, via the gaps of the Allegheny or, several counties to the south, via the Cumberland Narrows pass which held the Nemacolin Trail. Howdy, In today’s video(s) we will discuss the Ancient Kingdom of the Susquehannock. In a previous video we looked at Wright’s Ferry, and the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Today we will take the history back even further, as I will dive into journal entries dated from 1608 through the mid 1700’s, discussing the lost capital city of the Susquehannock, themselves an indigenous people who resided primarily in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, and other areas of the Susquehanna River. They are said to have ties to the ancient mound builders, being of a substantial physical stature themselves, and their capital was a fortification of immense proportions which sat on the coasts of the Susquehanna River, near what is today Wrightsville, Pennsylvania. Evidence of the The Susquehannock People has also been found in northern West Virginia and portions of southwestern Pennsylvania, which could be reached, via the gaps of the Allegheny or, several counties to the south, via the Cumberland Narrows pass which held the Nemacolin Trail. Susquehannock

The Susquehannock people, also called the Conestoga (by the English) were Iroquoian-speaking Native Americans who lived in areas adjacent to the Susquehanna River and its tributaries from its upper reaches in the southern part of what is now New York (and the lands of the Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy), through East-central and central Pennsylvania (West of the Poconos and the Delaware nations), with lands extending beyond the mouth of the Susquehanna in Maryland along the west bank of the Potomac at the north end of the Chesapeake Bay. Evidence of their habitation has also been found in West Virginia. The Cumberland Narrows pass, later called the Nemacolin Trail, abutted their range and it was likely navigable through valleys from their large settlement at Conestoga, Pennsylvania.

Names and endonym

As Europeans penetrated the interior from the coastal areas dominated by Algonquian-speaking tribes, they usually learned the names of new tribes by what the first groups called them. The Europeans adapted or transliterated these names according to their own languages and spelling systems, trying to capture the sounds of the names. In their own language, the Susquehannock identified as the Andaste, which is the most likely endonym. The exact pronunciation was likely some similar sequence of phonemes which referred to their palisade-style of construction.
