The county was archaically called Downshire. It borders County Antrim to the north, the Irish Sea to the east and south, County Armagh to the west, and County Louth across Carlingford Lough to the southwest. In the east of the county is Strangford Lough and the Ards Peninsula. The largest town is Bangor, on the northeast coast. Three other large towns and cities are on its border: Newry lies on the western border with County Armagh, while Lisburn and Belfast lie on the northern border with County Antrim. Down contains both the southernmost point of Northern Ireland (Cranfield Point) and the easternmost point of Ireland (Burr Point).
At the by-election in 1771 following Ward's creation as Baron Bangor
Elections in the 1760s
At the 1768 general election Roger Hall and Bernard Ward were elected unopposed.
Election in the 1610s
"In the co. of Down, May-day was the county court day for the election, which the sheriff held at Newry, at which day the sheriff proceeding to the election, moved the freeholders to choose Sir Richard Wingfield and Sir James Hamilton, being recommended to him by the Lord Deputy; but the natives named Sir Arthur Magenisse and Rowland Savage; whereupon all the British freeholders, being 131, cried “Hamilton and Montgomery”, omitting Wingfield; and the Irish, to the number of 101, cried “Magenisse and Savage”. Exception being presently taken to divers of the British for want of freehold, 14 were examined on oath by the sheriff and deposed they were freeholders, and thereupon the sheriff returned Hamilton and Montgomery; to which some of the Irish made objections, which were found partly untrue, and partly frivolous."
The Chieftains is the first album released by the Irish musical group The Chieftains in 1963. The album is now sometimes referred to as The Chieftains 1 due to the numbering system of their later albums. It was one of the first folk albums to be recorded in stereo.

The Chieftains 5 is an album by The Chieftains. It was the band's first album as a professional group. Derek Bell played the tiompan (the Irish hammered dulcimer) for the first time on this album. This was also the last album appearance of Peader Mercier before he left the group.
The Chieftains 3 is the third album released by the Irish musical group The Chieftains in 1971.
The tight formula of the first two albums loosened up on the third album. For the first time there was a mazurka. There is still no singing, but Pat Kilduff added lilting.
Track listing
"Strike the Gay Harp / Tiarna Maigheó (Lord Mayo) / The Lady on the Island / The Sailor on the Rock" – 6:24
The island's geography comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable climate which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the Middle Ages. As of 2013, the amount of land that is wooded in Ireland is about 11% of the total, compared with a European average of 35%. There are 26 extant mammal species native to Ireland. The Irish climate is very moderated and classified as oceanic. As a result, winters are milder than expected for such a northerly area. However, summers are cooler than those in Continental Europe. Rainfall and cloud cover are abundant.

A fire damaged the light and lantern in 1900 and it was converted to an unwatched electric light in 1934 (Ireland’s first to be converted to electric).
The RNLI station was inaugurated in 1910 and it’s current lifeboat, 14-21, is a Trent class lifeboat with a maximum speed of 25 knots and a range of 250 nautical miles. It also has a small XP boat to access shallow and inaccessible areas.
