Race teams have gathered in Connecticut to start a cross-country car race. One at a time, teams drive up to the starters' stand, punch a time card to indicate their time of departure, then take off.
Among the teams:
JJ McClure (Reynolds) and Victor Prinzim (DeLuise), drive a souped-up, but otherwise authentic, Dodge Tradesmanambulance. (Hal Needham and Brock Yates used the same vehicle in the actual 1979 race.)
Former open-wheel icon (and Scotch-swilling) Jamie Blake (Dean Martin) and his (gambling-obsessed) teammate Morris Fenderbaum (Sammy Davis, Jr.), dressed as Catholic priests, drive a red Ferrari 308 GTS. (They are based on an entry in the real 1972 race, in which three men disguised as priests ("The Flying Fathers") drove a Mercedes 280 SEL sedan, which they claimed to be "the Monsignor's car" belonging to an ecumenical council of prelates in California.)
This was the last of the "formula" comedies for Reynolds. It is also marked the final feature film appearances of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. Their appearances, coupled with those of Sammy Davis, Jr. and Shirley MacLaine, marked the final on-screen appearance of the old Rat Pack team.
Plot
Having lost the first Cannonball Run race, Sheik Abdul ben Falafel (Jamie Farr) is ordered by his father (Ricardo Montalban) to go back to America and win another Cannonball Run in order to "emblazon the Falafel name as the fastest in the world." When Sheik Abdul points out that there is no Cannonball Run that year, his father simply tells him to "buy one."
To make sure his ulcer does not prevent him from winning, the Sheik hires Doctor Nikolas Van Helsing (Jack Elam), who teamed with JJ (Burt Reynolds) and Victor (Dom DeLuise) in the first race as his in-car physician. He brings along a blond-haired servant (Doug McClure), who receives numerous slaps in the face from both the sheik and his father. Most of the participants from the first race are lured back, including JJ and Victor, who have taken jobs working with a flying stunt crew.
The 30-pounder cannon had misfired during a practice session southern ramparts of the Colombo Fort. The ball had deflected after striking a masonry bridge and shot almost a mile down the Green, scoring a direct hit on the roof of the Galle Face Boarding House (now the Galle Face Hotel). It crashed through the roof and ceiling and fell into a drawing room, where landed on the "squared chunam and terra-cotta floor leaving a heavy dent where it rolled under a chair and remained". The British Governor of Ceylon at that time Sir Colin Campbell on hearing of the incident rushed to the scene to view the "mischief" done by "the incredible Cannonball". The cannon ball is preserved in the "Regency Wing" of the hotel.
The event has been marked over the years by the run, which is organised by the Galle Face Hotel. It begins at the cannon on the Fort end of the Green and ends at a cannonball placed on a pedestal in the hotel. The runners are generally members of the diplomatic community.
The ride features a 65-foot lift hill and runs over and next to the park's parking lot. It is an out and back design, meaning the course goes out away from the station, turns around, then heads back to the station. Each ride cycle usually consists of two laps around the course.
Trains
Cannonball Run currently operates with one train from Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters. The train is made up of five cars, with each car seating four people (twenty riders total). The train features a seatbelt for each row and a single position lapbar.

"The Cannonball Run" was inspired by the actual Cannonball race, in which the participating cars had to cross the United States, starting off from New York and finishing in Los Angeles, in the shortest possible time.
