William Scott Elam, known as Jack Elam (November 13, 1920– October 20, 2003), was an Americanfilm and televisionactor best known for his numerous roles as villains in Western films and, later in his career, comedies (sometimes spoofing his villainous image). His most distinguishing physical quality was the iris of his left eye, which was skewed to the outside, making him look unnaturally wall-eyed (the opposite of cross-eyed). Before his career in acting, he took several jobs in finance and served two years in the United States Navy during World War II.
Elam was born in Miami in Gila County in south central Arizona, to Millard Elam and Alice Amelia Kirby. His mother died in 1922 when Jack was two years old. By 1930, he was living with his father, older sister Mildred, and their stepmother, Flossie Varney Elam.
Elam (/ˈiːləm/) was an ancient Pre-Iranic civilization centered in the far west and southwest of what is now modern-day Iran, stretching from the lowlands of what is now Khuzestan and Ilam Province as well as a small part of southern Iraq. The modern name Elam stems from the Sumerian transliteration elam(a), along with the later Akkadianelamtu, and the Elamitehaltamti. Elamite states were among the leading political forces of the Ancient Near East. In classical literature, Elam was more often referred to as Susiana a name derived from its capital, Susa. However, Susiana is not synonymous with Elam and, in its early history, was a distinctly separate cultural and political entity.
Elam was part of the early urbanization during the Chalcolithic period (Copper Age). The emergence of written records from around 3000 BC also parallels Sumerian history, where slightly earlier records have been found. In the Old Elamite period (Middle Bronze Age), Elam consisted of kingdoms on the Iranian plateau, centered in Anshan, and from the mid-2nd millennium BC, it was centered in Susa in the Khuzestan lowlands. Its culture played a crucial role during the PersianAchaemenid dynasty that succeeded Elam, when the Elamite language remained among those in official use. Elamite is generally accepted to be a language isolate.
Elam (/ˈiː.ləm/;עֵילָם‘Êlām) in the Hebrew Bible (Genesis 10:22, Ezra 4:9;) is said to be one of the sons of Shem, the son of Noah. It is also used (as in Akkadian), for the ancient country of Elam in what is now southern Iran, whose people the Hebrews believed to be the offspring of Elam, son of Shem. This implies that the Elamites were considered Semites by the Hebrews, although their language was not Semitic, but is considered a linguistic isolate. This modern categorization does not conflict with the Hebrew Bible, since it holds that the diversity of human languages originated at the tower of Babel.
Genesis also states that Elam's brother Arphaxad was born two years after the flood.
Elam (the nation) is also mentioned in Genesis 14, describing an ancient war in the time of Abraham, involving a king of Elam it calls Chedorlaomer.
The prophecies of Isaiah (11:11, 21:2, 22:6) and Jeremiah (25:25) also mention Elam. The last part of Jeremiah 49 is an apocalyptic oracle against Elam which states that Elam will be scattered to the four winds of the earth, but "will be, in the end of days, that I will return their captivity," a prophecy self-dated to the first year of Zedekiah (597 BC).
Who is your favorite Western villain? Most of the best ones were played by Jack Elam.
He grew up in rural Arizona with no dreams of stardom. He started helping his father with forms at his accounting firm, which is where he got his first taste of business.

The Tragic Story Of JACK ELAM Behind A CRAZY EYED HEAVY.
In Western films, there are always opposite roles as the hero and the villain. Jack Elam is one of the best male counter-actors in Western films of his time. Even the villains of Jack Elam's acting have become iconic anti-heroes. It's surprising that in the movies, he looks so fierce, but in real life he is an extremely gentle and warm man.

A fight at Boy Scouts escalated into an almost deadly experience. Another boy threw a pencil at him, and it stabbed him in the left eye. It was so damaged that the lens had to be removed, and it began to droop uncontrollably.
Jack wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps as an accountant, but staring at documents put him at risk of losing sight in his other eye. He had to find another career, and offering accounting experience for a part in three of his friend’s films was the golden ticket.
He began as a villain in Westerns so despicable that he could barely walk the street without getting dirty looks from his audience. That lasted for a while until he successfully transitioned to comedy. When he wasn’t racking up an impressive filmography, he played Liar’s Poker with his setmates. He loved to gamble even though he didn’t have the best poker face, and he still won most of the time. Jack also had two successful marriages. He stayed with Jean Lousie Hodge until her death and Margaret M. Jennison until he died.
Jack succumbed to congestive heart failure when he was 82. He was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame, and his friends had nothing but kind words. He also amassed a net worth of over $2 million. My initial impression of the old tractor was that if it were a person, it would be “Big Mac,” the villain played by JackElam in the “Apple Dumpling Gang.” ... down and to the left, reminded me of Elam.
