TOP 10 ED SULLIVAN PERFORMANCES THAT CHANGED HISTORY
In the days before MTV and Youtube, how did fans get to see their favorite musical acts perform, especially if you lived somewhere rural no big groups would tour through? The answer is through variety tv shows that would combine sketch comedy, dramatic actors, dance, and special musical guests into a vaudevillian good time. In fact, the first time a Rock song was performed on national tv was on Ed Sullivan in 1955. The Rolling Stones Live, 25/10/1964, Ed Sullivan Theatre, NY
As many pop acts at the time, the Ed Sullivan show had to be the go to place for up and coming talent. And just coming fresh out of Paris, where the Stones were really popular, they flew to the USA. This single handily made the Stones late Autumn tour instantly successful, cementing their name in the US.
Around and Around - 1:00
Time is On My Side - 4:11
The Rolling Stones had only played 2 songs, both covers. The songs selected I find interesting as it didn't show off their first single in the States, "Tell Me", which was actually an original. But Around and Around from their album earlier that October, and Time is On My Side, the single. All in all, this is a great bit of early Stones footage.

The Beatles - I Want To Hold Your Hand - Performed Live On The Ed Sullivan Show 2/9/64
The Beatles performing “I Want To Hold Your Hand Live On The Ed Sullivan Show 2/9/64.”
‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ was the first Beatles’ record to top both the UK and the US charts. It was also their first to be recorded on a 4-track, as opposed to the usual 2-track, tape machine. The Beatles had the song well rehearsed when they made the first of 17 takes on October 17th 1963.
Following The Beatles’ historic appearance on The Ed Sullivan show on February 9th, the single – already at No.1 in the charts – gained further momentum. They taped a performance of the song earlier in the day of their live appearance and it was shown on the Sullivan show of February 23rd, which helped maintain the song’s popularity. This avalanche of publicity, engineered by Brian Epstein, helped the single to s...

And for new artists looking to make it big, or established stars releasing new hits, for decades the premier show to appear on was The Ed Sullivan Show. From 1948 till 1971 Sullivan hosted too many famous acts to name, and iconic musical moments on his show were common. In fact, the first time a Rock song was performed on national tv was on Ed Sullivan in 1955. I’m Nostalgic Nick for Doyouremember, and today we’re going to be counting down so me of the best performances ever on The Ed Sullivan Show.
This avalanche of publicity, engineered by Brian Epstein, helped the single to stay at the top for seven weeks, which made it the longest-running No.1 of their career to date (until ‘Hey Jude’).

The Byrds - "The Times They Are A Changin'" - 10/4/65
Wonderful & Retro vid from the band's second and final appearance on "Hulla...."
This is a pre-recorded backing track with live vocals. Unfortunately Gene & David's mics are mixed low, so we don't quite get the full "Byrds Splendor" as far as the harmonies go.
Listen to how the tape slows down during Crosby's close-up.
Busted!! :-)
This and the Sullivan shows are the only colour footage that I know of from the "Original 5".
Michael Landon being the host on this October evening, he was riding high on "Bonanza" at the time.

The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The Byrds was an American rock group that focused on the folk rock subgenre and were influential in introducing this genre to music fans. The band had several members throughout their lifespan – each of whom contributed to the band’s success and unique style.
Sadly, some of The Byrds members are no longer with us. Some of them lived long lives and some of them had their lives cut tragically short. But what The Byrds members had in common was their incredible talent.
One of the founders was Gene Clark who was a singer-songwriter and helped write many of the band’s biggest hits. He was keen on recording music but often felt anxious about touring with them as he hated traveling. He died in 1991 at the age of 46.
Mike Clarke was a young jazz drummer who became a star when he became a member of The Byrds. He wasn’t too involved with the songwriting but nevertheless helped compose some of the band’s best songs. He sadly died in his forties due to liver failure.
But what about Gram Parsons? He died at a young age and what happened to his corpse after his death remains shocking and unthinkable to this day. Sadly, he wasn’t the only one. Clarence White was the talented guitarist for the band and was killed in his twenties.
Kevin Kelley and Skip Battin also had short stints with The Byrds and are sadly no longer with us. This unique band had its share of ups and downs and some members lasted longer than others. Nevertheless, we can thank all of them for creating some of the most unique sounds in American music.
Let’s look back at the lives and careers of all The Byrds members who have sadly died…
