Merle Ronald Haggard (born April 6, 1937) is an American country and Western songwriter, singer, guitarist, fiddler, and instrumentalist. Along with Buck Owens, Haggard and his band The Strangers helped create the Bakersfield sound, which is characterized by the unique twang of Fender Telecaster and the unique mix with the traditional country steel guitar sound, new vocal harmony styles in which the words are minimal, and a rough edge not heard on the more polished Nashville sound recordings of the same era.
By the 1970s, Haggard was aligned with the growing outlaw country movement, and has continued to release successful albums through the 1990s and into the 2000s. In 1994, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1997, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
Haggard's parents, Flossie Mae Harp and James Francis Haggard, moved to California from their home in Checotah, Oklahoma, during the Great Depression, after their barn burned in 1934. They settled with their children, Lowell and Lillian, in an apartment in Bakersfield, while James Francis Haggard started working for the Santa Fe Railroad. A woman who owned a boxcar, which was placed in Oildale, a nearby town north of Bakersfield, asked Haggard's father about the possibility of converting it into a house. He remodeled the boxcar, and soon after moved in, also purchasing the lot, where Merle Ronald Haggard was born on April 6, 1937. The property was eventually expanded by building a bathroom, a second bedroom, a kitchen and a breakfast nook in the adjacent lot.
The Beaver is the weekly newspaper of the LSE Students' Union at the London School of Economics, England.
The Beaver is independent in its reporting. 2,000 copies are published and distributed free of charge every Tuesday during term time. The Beaver is governed by the Collective, a body of students who have contributed three or more written pieces or photographs to the paper and elects the editorial staff. The paper is made up of sections for News, Comment, The Union, Features, The City, The NAB and Sport, as well as an arts and culture supplement, PartB.
Named after the School's mascot, the Beaver, which was apparently chosen “as representing an industrious animal with social habits”, The Beaver was first published in its recognised format on 5 May 1949. The British Library of Political and Economic Science holds print and digital archives of the paper dating back to this first issue, which was christened by George Bernard Shaw, one of the LSE's founders. Since then it has gone through several makeovers, survived LSE's turbulent history and emerged to be one of the most respected and widely read student newspapers in the UK.
Canada's History is the official magazine of Canada's National History Society. It is published six times a year and aims to promote interest in and knowledge of Canadian history. Founded in 1920 as The Beaver by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), the magazine was acquired by the Society in 1994. Subject matter includes all aspects of Canadian history.
The founding of The Beaver was one of the many activities in celebration of HBC's 250th anniversary. It was seen as a staff publication "devoted to The Interests of Those Who Serve the Hudson's Bay Company."
The first issue appeared in October 1920, under the banner, The Beaver, A Journal of Progress — the "successful name" in a staff competition. Five thousand copies were printed and distributed at a total cost of $570.
According to Charles Sale, who became the 29th Governor of HBC, there was a "purely personal and domestic character" to the initial magazine. Sale felt this approach was too narrow. He envisioned The Beaver as "... one of exceeding use to ...Staff; but also a publication that could ...be distributed to customers to their benefit and is, at the same time a practical reminder (through advertising) of the Company's existence and of the goods which it offers."
In ancient times the beaver was hunted for its testicles, which it was thought had medicinal qualities. The story that the animal would gnaw these off to save itself when hunted was preserved by some ancient Greek naturalists and perpetuated into the Middle Ages. It also appeared as a Greek fable ascribed to Aesop and is numbered 118 in the Perry Index.
In Latin literary sources the fable was versified by Phaedrus and is alluded to by Juvenal in a satire. There the merchant Catullus jettisons his rich cargo from a ship caught in a storm ‘in imitation of the beaver that in its desire to escape death, will bite off its testicles and render itself a eunuch’. The moral that Juvenal and later fabulists drew from the story is that in order to preserve oneself it is better to sacrifice lesser considerations.
The beaver's example was eventually to be recommended to good Christians. In Classical times the priests of Cybele castrated themselves in order to devote themselves wholly to their goddess. A saying by Jesus that 'there are eunuchs which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake’ (Matthew 19.12) was taken by some in the early Church as seeming to recommend a similar practice, rather than abstinence, and the early Church Fathers had constantly to argue that this had to be taken metaphorically. It was in this context that Tertullian scorned the celibate followers of Marcion with a reference to the fable, asking “Is any beaver more self castrating?”

MY ROUGH AND ROWDY WAYS
(Jimmie Rodgers)
« © '33 Peer International, BMI »
For years and years I've rambled I drank my wine and gambled
But one day I thought I would settle down
I have met a perfect lady she said she'd be my baby
We built a cottage in the old hometown
But somehow I can't give up my good old rambling ways
Lord the railroad trains are calling me away
I may be rough I may be wild I may be tough and that's just my style
I can't give up my good old rough and rowdy ways
But somehow I can't give up...
