Merle Ronald Haggard (born April 6, 1937) is an American country and Western songwriter, singer, guitarist, fiddler, and instrumentalist. Along with Buck Owens, Haggard and his band The Strangers helped create the Bakersfield sound, which is characterized by the unique twang of Fender Telecaster and the unique mix with the traditional country steel guitar sound, new vocal harmony styles in which the words are minimal, and a rough edge not heard on the more polished Nashville sound recordings of the same era.
By the 1970s, Haggard was aligned with the growing outlaw country movement, and has continued to release successful albums through the 1990s and into the 2000s. In 1994, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1997, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
Haggard's parents, Flossie Mae Harp and James Francis Haggard, moved to California from their home in Checotah, Oklahoma, during the Great Depression, after their barn burned in 1934. They settled with their children, Lowell and Lillian, in an apartment in Bakersfield, while James Francis Haggard started working for the Santa Fe Railroad. A woman who owned a boxcar, which was placed in Oildale, a nearby town north of Bakersfield, asked Haggard's father about the possibility of converting it into a house. He remodeled the boxcar, and soon after moved in, also purchasing the lot, where Merle Ronald Haggard was born on April 6, 1937. The property was eventually expanded by building a bathroom, a second bedroom, a kitchen and a breakfast nook in the adjacent lot.
"Heartaches by the Number" is a popular country song written by Harlan Howard and published in 1959.
The biggest hit version was recorded by Guy Mitchell on August 24, 1959. It reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for the weeks of December 14 and December 21, 1959. The recording was released by Columbia Records as catalog number 41476. This would be Guy's second Pop chart topper (After Singing the Blues); ironically, it would also be his last top-40 single in the Billboard charts. The video game Fallout: New Vegas does not feature his original Columbia Records version; rather it is a 1980 re-recording made for K-Tel records.
Earlier in the year, the song also made the country music charts in a version by Ray Price (Columbia 41374). Price's version reached number two and spent 40 weeks on the Billboard Hot C&W Sides chart.
Sheet music for the song was a best seller in both the US and Britain in January 1960.
In 1961, a George Jones version of the song was included on the Mercury label album George Jones Sings Country and Western Hits (MG 20624/SR 60624).
Heartaches By The Number (And Other Country Favorites) by Waylon Jennings was an album issued in 1972 on RCA Camden, a budget label of RCA Records.
The contents of this album were taken from the 1966 album Leavin' Town, the 1967 album Waylon Sings Ol' Harlan and the 1968 album Jewels.
In 1975, Pickwick Records gained the right to reissue this album but went out of print in 1982 when US Pickwick folded. In 1999, Delta Entertainment issued this on CD (though with different cover art) for the first time. In 2004, Collectables Records issued this album with The One And Only Waylon Jennings as a two-for-one CD. The following year, Sony BMG Strategic Marketing reissued this yet again, this time with the original cover art.
Ironically, the Collectables CD was very similar to a 1982 RCA Special Products double-LP release called "Waylon!".
Heartaches by the Number is an album released in 2007 by American country music artist David Ball. It is his first release for the Shanachie Records label. Except for the track "Please Feed the Jukebox", which Ball wrote himself, all of the songs on this album are covers of classic country songs. No singles were released from this album.

MY ROUGH AND ROWDY WAYS
(Jimmie Rodgers)
« © '33 Peer International, BMI »
For years and years I've rambled I drank my wine and gambled
But one day I thought I would settle down
I have met a perfect lady she said she'd be my baby
We built a cottage in the old hometown
But somehow I can't give up my good old rambling ways
Lord the railroad trains are calling me away
I may be rough I may be wild I may be tough and that's just my style
I can't give up my good old rough and rowdy ways
But somehow I can't give up...
