Jens Christian Bugge Wesseltoft (born 1 February 1964) is a Norwegian jazz musician, pianist, composer and producer, son of the jazz guitarist Erik Wesseltoft.
Career
Wesseltoft was born in Porsgrunn. After high school in Skien, where he was involved in the school brass band and dance orchestras, he became a professional musician in 1983 only 19 years old. By the age of 16, he joined a punk rock band, but the influence of the jazz guitarist father, stalked on him. After moving to his father in Oslo (1984), it was mostly music with roots in jazz that mattered, although he also worked as a back-up musician and producer for the pop and rock elite in Norway. He had originally intended to study music, but the gigs were too many, and therefore he never got any further formal musical education. Towards the end of the 1980s Bugge Wesseltoft was involved in a variety of pop, rock and jazz bands like the "U and Z", "Et Cetera" and most important the Oslo Groove Company, and he was recognised as a coming musical genius with a great talent for the piano. This led to collaborations within the Knut Riisnæs Quartet in 1989, and he was soon after contacted by Arild Andersen to join in on the commissioned work for Vossajazz - released on the album Sagn (1990) - and the follow up Arv (1993), and Jan Garbarek for his Molde Canticle (1990), a commission from the Moldejazz, released on the album I Took Up the Runes (1990).
The Battle (French: La Bataille) is a historical novel by the French author Patrick Rambaud that was first published in 1997. The English translation by Will Hobson appeared in 2000. The book describes the 1809 Battle of Aspern-Essling between the French Empire under Napoleon and the Austrian Empire. The action in the novel follows closely historical observations and descriptions as seen from the French perspective. La Bataille is the first book of a trilogy by Rambaud about the decline of Napoleon, describing his first personal defeat in a European battle; the other two books cover Napoleon’s defeat in Russia in The Retreat and his banishment at Elba in Napoleon’s Exile.
Historical background
In the War of the Fifth Coalition Austria and Great Britain sought to reduce French dominance on the continent. Napoleon, however, succeeded militarily in Southern Germany and entered Vienna on May 13, 1809. The main Austrian army under
Archduke Charles retreated to the eastern shore of the Danube. Napoleon chose to cross the Danube south of Vienna at the Lobau island. He directed the construction of a pontoon bridge to cross to the eastern side where he occupied the villages of Aspern and Essling (today part of Vienna).
The Battle was Jones's second album following his divorce from Tammy Wynette and continued his mid-seventies commercial slide. Although it did slightly better than his previous album Memories of Us on the Billboard country album charts, reaching number 36, it was a far cry from what the singer had been accustomed to. Despite the absence of a hit single, Jones's singing is characteristically impeccable, especially on the title track, which peaked at number 14 on the singles chart. Roy Kasten of Amazon.com argues, "The extended metaphor of "The Battle," in which satin gowns become armor and tears deadly weapons, would be absurd in most hands; yet the story of a marriage disintegrating into war, but somehow finding peace, becomes transcendent in the hands of Jones..." The singer gives an equally moving vocal on David Allan Coe's "I Still Sing The Old Songs", which is topped off by producer Billy Sherrill having a lone violin playing "The Red River Valley" on the outro. The Battle also includes a song Jones wrote with Wynette called "Wean Me", in which Jones begs an unnamed woman to "Take this bottle from my hand" and laments his "childish ways," lines that may have been all too prescient for Wynette. In the liner notes to the 1999 reissue of the LP, Wynette is quoted, "It's funny, George and I have lived our life in our music. It's all there...the fans don't have to ask."

LIfe is never fair, man will let you down It's how you face your obstacles, react to things around And I will not stand still, I'll hold my head up high My heart is big, my passion strong, you cannot stop this drive I know you though that this battle had been won But I will reassure you that this battle's just begun Get out of my way, today is the day that I am breaking free From all of your thoughts and all of your words that tried to bring down me - You should have thought long and you should have thought hard before you tossed me out - 'Cause this old Tulsa boy who plays the keys and writes these melodies is gonna rock this town Let my life speak loud to all of you around No matter what they say to you, they cannot hold you down Your dreams and goals are bigger than your opposition's words So brush 'em off and forget them, it's time to go change the world I know you though that this battle had been won But I will reassure you that this battle's just begun Get out of my way, today is the day that I am breaking free From all of your thoughts and all of your words that tried to bring down me - You should have thought long and you should have thought hard before you tossed me out - 'Cause this old Tulsa boy who plays the keys
