Grandad - Clive Dunn (Top Of The Pops) 1971 (New Stereo Version) SHQ
A nice trip down memory lane for you here and the fabulous Clive Dunn singing "Grandad"
"Grandad" is a song written by Herbie Flowers and Kenny Pickett, and recorded by Clive Dunn.
While starring in the long-running BBC situation comedy Dad's Army, Dunn met bassist Herbie Flowers at a party and on learning he was a songwriter challenged him to write a song for him. Flowers wrote "Grandad" with Creation vocalist Kenny Pickett.
The song was released as a single in November 1970, and, aided by promotion such as appearing on children's shows such as Basil Brush and DJ Tony Blackburn claiming it as his favourite record, in January 1971 reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks, during which time Dunn celebrated his 51st birthday, and went on to spend a total of 27 weeks on the c...

*Herbie Flowers, Iconic Bassist, Dies at 86*
Herbie Flowers, the celebrated British bass guitarist known for his work with music legends including David Bowie, Elton John, Paul McCartney, and Marc Bolan, has passed away at the age of 86. Tributes have poured in for Flowers, who was a revered figure in the music industry.
Born Brian Keith Flowers, he was widely known as 'Herbie' throughout his illustrious career. Flowers began his musical journey in Isleworth, Middlesex, and later moved to Ditchling, East Sussex. His career highlights include contributions to Blue Mink, T. Rex, and Sky.
Flowers was renowned for his distinctive bass line in Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side," which became Reed's only Top 20 hit in the US. He played a significant role in the golden era of rock, contributing to numerous recordings with top artists and bands.
The news of Flowers' death was confirmed by family members via social media. Kevin J Conklin, Flowers' niece's husband, paid tribute to him on Facebook, highlighting his profound impact on the music world and his personal significance in their lives.
A statement on David Bowie's official Facebook page praised Flowers' exceptional musicianship and noted his passing as a significant loss. Flowers' career also included stints with Dixieland jazz bands, and he was known for his versatility, playing the double bass, tuba, and electric bass.
Flowers' musical legacy extends to composing and local community involvement, including founding two community choirs. His contributions to music and education have left an enduring mark.
Flowers' passing marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned decades and touched the lives of many through his innovative and memorable music.

1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks, during which time Dunn celebrated his 51st birthday, and went on to spend a total of 27 weeks on the chart. Dunn never had another hit single, but he did release an album that featured "Grandad" and its B-side "I Play the Spoons", titled Permission to Sing Sir!
From 1979 to 1984, Dunn starred as Charlie "Grandad" Quick in a children's television show titled Grandad, although the series did not use the song as the theme tune.
Clive Robert Bertram Dunn OBE (born Robert Bertram Dunn; 9 January 1920 – 6 November 2012) was an English actor. Although he was only 48 and one of the youngest cast members, he was cast in a role many years his senior, as the elderly Lance Corporal Jones in the BBC sitcom Dad's Army, which ran for nine series and 80 episodes between 1968 and 1977.
Dunn started his acting career in 1935, but this was interrupted by the Second World War, in which he served as a trooper in the 4th Queen's Own Hussars. In 1941, the regiment was forced to surrender after it was overrun during the Greek campaign, and Dunn was held as a POW in Austria for the next four years.
After the war, Dunn resumed his acting career in repertory theatre. He made his first television appearance in 1951 as the man in the pub in Surprise Attack, a short film commissioned by the Ministry of Health. Dunn appeared in both series of The Tony Hancock Show and made many appearances with Tony Hancock, Michael Bentine, Dora Bryan and Dick Emery, among others, before winning the role of Jones in Dad's Army in 1968.
Thank you all, enjoy
