Herbie Flowers (born Brian Keith Flowers, 19 May 1938, in Isleworth, Middlesex) is an English musician specialising in bass guitar, double-bass and tuba. He is noted as a member of Blue Mink, T. Rex and Sky and as one of Britain's best-known session bass-players, having contributed to recordings by Elton John (Tumbleweed Connection etc.), David Bowie (Space Oddity/Diamond Dogs), Lou Reed (Transformer including the prominent bass line of "Walk on the Wild Side"), Roy Harper, David Essex, Allan Clarke, Al Kooper, Harry Nilsson (including bass on "Jump into the Fire"), Cat Stevens, Serge Gainsbourg, Paul McCartney and George Harrison: he also played bass on Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds. By the end of the 1970s Flowers had played bass on an estimated 500 hit recordings.
Herbie Flowers began his musical training in 1956 when conscripted into the Royal Air Force: electing at first to serve for nine years as a bandsman playing tuba. He took up double bass as a second instrument to secure his "junior technician" stripe, and later moved to electric bass. After completing his military service he passed through the line-ups of several Dixieland jazz bands in the early 1960s, then discovered modern jazz. In 1965 he was engaged as a bandsman on the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth. In New York, after hearing a jazz electric bass in a night club, he acquired his own solid-body electric instrument, a Lake Placid Blue 1960 Fender Jazz Bass that he purchased from Manny's in New York City for $79.
Herbie the Love Bug is an anthropomorphic 1963 Volkswagen Beetle, a character that is featured in several Disney motion pictures starting with the 1968 feature film The Love Bug. He has a mind of his own and is capable of driving himself, and is also a serious contender in auto racing competitions. Throughout most of the franchise, Herbie is distinguished by red, white and blue racing stripes from front to back bumper, a racing-style number "53" on the front luggage compartment lid, doors, and engine lid, and a yellow-on-black '63 California license plate with the lettering "OFP 857".
Herbie's origins are firmly established in The Love Bug (1968). He was bought from Peter Thorndyke's showroom by San Francisco socialite Mrs. Van Luit for her upstairs maid, but returned shortly afterwards due to reliability problems, and purchased by race-driver Jim Douglas (Dean Jones), who had earlier stood up for him against the pompous Thorndyke (David Tomlinson). Tennessee Steinmetz (Buddy Hackett), Jim's friend and housemate, names the car "Herbie" after his uncle Herb, a professional boxer whose broken nose greatly resembled the hood of a Volkswagen Beetle.
The Love Bug (1968), sometimes referred to as Herbie the Love Bug, is the first in a series of comedy films made by Walt Disney Productions that starred an anthropomorphic pearl-white, fabric-sunroofed 1963 Volkswagen racing Beetle named Herbie. It was based on the 1961 book Car, Boy, Girl by Gordon Buford.
The movie follows the adventures of Herbie, Herbie's driver, Jim Douglas (Dean Jones), and Jim's love interest, Carole Bennett (Michele Lee). It also features Buddy Hackett as Jim's enlightened, kind-hearted friend, Tennessee Steinmetz, a character who creates "art" from used car parts. English actor David Tomlinson portrays the villainous Peter Thorndyke, owner of an auto showroom and an SCCA national champion who sells Herbie to Jim and eventually becomes Jim's racing rival.

A Candid Interview with British Session musician Herbie Flowers. Herbie talks about his life as a studio/session musician, the history of his Fender Jazz Bass / Tuba and the recordings he played on.
In September 2010 I got together a bunch of musical friends and had the privilege of performing an evening of the songs of David Bowie at the Hanbury Ballroom in Brighton. The event was called 'We Could Be Bowie (Just For One Day)' and featured a great house band with several special guests including one Herbie Flowers - legendary rock and jazz bassist who played on the original David Bowie/Space oddity and Diamond Dogs albums, plus tours and other records with Bowie (and many more great artists). I was just going to post the music but Herbie's banter is so lovely I had to leave it in, and his performance here on bass is a master class in feel and groove... The band were: Herbie Flowers (bass) Alex White (drums) Rachael Wood (guitar) Ralph Brown (vocals) Phil McDonald (percussion) Gabri...

A nice trip down memory lane for you here and the fabulous Clive Dunn singing "Grandad" "Grandad" is a song written by Herbie Flowers and Kenny Pickett, and recorded by Clive Dunn. While starring in the long-running BBC situation comedy Dad's Army, Dunn met bassist Herbie Flowers at a party and on learning he was a songwriter challenged him to write a song for him. Flowers wrote "Grandad" with Creation vocalist Kenny Pickett. The song was released as a single in November 1970, and, aided by promotion such as appearing on children's shows such as Basil Brush and DJ Tony Blackburn claiming it as his favourite record, in January 1971 reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks, during which time Dunn celebrated his 51st birthday, and went on to spend a total of 27 weeks on the c...

Now it's just a memory,
And it's hard to think(hard to think about it)
Bout the love I left behind
I can't help but think(what could I have done about it)
But deep inside I know it's your fault that I'm not there
Once you put aside your pride, I know that you saw it so clearly
That your nearly losing your mind
Tryna rewind
Do what you did and didn't do
So I'm telling you...
You should have did so much more to show you loved me
I'm wishing
I wish you would have gave me The Flowers(when I could smell them)
And I'm wishing
I wish you would have held me for hours(when I was around)
Now there's nothing you can do...
But to wish I was with you...
But it's too little too late, to late to late
Press rewind(to go back in time)
So there's nothing you can do...
Cause I'm no longer missing you...
You should have gave me The Flowers(when I could smell them)
Cause now I'm gone
And baby it's so hard to believe ya when you say that you promise your be better
Cause everything your saying right now, you can saying forever
You should of showed you loved me, You should have spent more time
You should have been the answers to the questions in my mind
But your here ain't going no where you'll never let me go
(you'll never let me go)
Cause baby, I could'ntfeel your love was real, you took for granted what we had
So I'm telling you...
You should of did so much more to show you loved me
And it hurts so much inside for me to let you go(let you go yea)
But it hurts me so much more to stay with you and I know that
You can explain how much you changed
But it remains the same
It's just to late for us... (it's just to late for us)
There's no way to get back
All the love that we had...
But I still can't help but wish that...
I'm wishing
I wish you would have gave me The Flowers(when I could smell them)
And I'm wishing
I wish you would have held me for hours(when I was around)
Now there's nothing you can do(and there's nothing you can do about it)
But to wish I was with you (but to think about it)
But it's too little too late, to late to late
Press rewind(to go back in time)
So there's nothing you can do... (No)
Cause I'm no longer missing you...
You should have gave me The Flowers(when I could smell them)
(Hey Hey Hey Hey)
I'm wishing
I wish you would have gave me The Flowers(when I could smell them)
And I'm wishing
I wish you would have held me for hours(when I was around)
Now there's nothing you can do... (Nothing You Can Do)
But to wish I was with you... (But To Wish I Was With You)
But it's too little too late, to late to late
