The pressure on the Archbishop of Canterbury mounts | The Daily T Podcast
Justin Welby is facing growing calls to resign after a report found the Church of England covered up “abhorrent” abuse.
The review said Archbishop Welby “could and should” have reported the case to authorities when details of the abuse of more than 100 boys and young men at the hands of serial predator John Smyth were presented to him in 2013. Archbishop Welby admitted he had “personally failed to ensure” it was investigated, but that he had “no idea or suspicion of this abuse” before 2013.
Kamal and Gordon Rayner are joined by The Telegraph’s Religious and Social Affairs Editor Janet Eastham to talk through what Welby did and didn’t know and whether his position is tenable.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby is facing mounting pressure to resign after a damning report into a child abuser associated with the Church of England.
The spiritual head of the world Anglican communion is accused of failing to act on reports of horrific child abuse by John Smyth QC, who preyed on more than 100 boys and young men.
A review of the Church’s handling of the Smyth case said Justin Welby "could and should" have reported the case to authorities when details were presented to him in 2013.
Bishop of Newcastle Helen-Ann Hartley is the most senior member of the Church to call on Justin Welby to stand down, after others accused him of "allowing abuse to continue" between 2013 and Smyth's death in 2018.
Mr Welby has acknowledged that the review made clear he had "personally failed" to "energetically investigate". He said he had considered resigning, but decided to stay in his role.
Smyth is the most prolific known serial abuser associated with the Church of England, having subjected as many as 130 victims to traumatic physical, sexual, psychological and spiritual attacks.
His abuse took place over almost five decades and across three countries, according to the report. He targeted boys who attended summer camps he ran for young Christians. Smyth abused 26 to 30 boys and young men in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s, the report found. He then relocated to Africa, where he abused a further 85 to 100 "young male children aged 13 to 17".
The report says that from July 2013, the Church of England knew "at the highest level" about Smyth's abuse in the UK and should have "properly and effectively" reported him to the UK police and the authorities in South Africa.

DEAR FRIEND
IF YOU WANT TO FEEL BETTER
DON’T LET THE DEVIL MAKE YOU TOSS THIS LETTER.
IF YOU’VE BEEN CROSSED UP BY HOODOO, VOODOO
THE WIZARD OR THE LIZARD
YOU GOT FAMILY TROUBLE, MAN TROUBLE, WOMAN TROUBLE,
NO LIGHT THROUGH THE RUBBLE?
YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A TRUE FRIEND OR A TRUE LOVER
OR IF YOU’VE BEEN LIVING UNDERCOVER
WELL I’M COMING TO YOUR TOWN TO BREAK IT ALL DOWN
AND HELP YOU WITH ALL OF THIS
I’M LOOKING TO HELP YOU FIND BLISS
ONE DAY, ONE WAY, CAN’T MISS.
I’M HERE TO TEAR ALL THE WALLS DOWN
DOESN’T MATTER IF IT’S A LARGE TOWN OR A SMALL TOWN
JUST LIKE JOSHUA AND THE FABLED WALLS OF JERICHO
I’M HERE TO TEAR DOWN THE INSTITUTION
GOD SPOKE TO ME
SAID “LISTEN TO ME I ANOINT YOU WITH THE POWER
THAT’LL GET ‘EM ALL MOVIN’!”
YOU’RE AGITATED? YOU PRAYED AND MEDITATED?
YOU’RE CONCENTRATED ON GETTING ELEVATED?
BY SUNDOWN, MONDAY
YOU WHO COME WILL BE BLESSED WITH THE BIG MONEY BLESSING
YOU WILL BE DOUBTED, BY ALL THE UNBELIEVERS
ON ALL OF THE THINGS I’M ADDRESSING
BUT YOU MUST TELL SEVEN FRIENDS.
YOU MUST FIRST BRING SEVEN FRIENDS.
AND DON’T BE SELFISH AND KEEP THIS ALL TO YOURSELF!
(AND DON’T EAT SHELLFISH!)
HATE IS TRYING TO TAKE SOMEONE ELSE’S LOVE FOR YOURSELF
BUT I’M HERE TO TELL YOU THAT LOVE IS
TRYING TO HELP SOMEONE ELSE.
I REALIZE THAT YOU HAVE TRIED AND TRIED
AND ARE JUST ABOUT READY TO GIVE UP
BUT I GOT GOOD NEWS FOR YOU:
GOD HAS SPOKEN TO MY MIND AND TOLD ME TO TELL YOU TO GET MOVING
IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION FOR A CHANGE
I’M GONNA PUT YOU IN THE FAST LANE!
YOU NEED TO SEE ME RIGHT AWAY SO I CAN FIX THIS!
YOU NEED TO SEE ME RIGHT AWAY!
YOU NEED TO SEE ME RIGHT AWAY SO I CAN FIX THIS!
YOU NEED TO SEE ME RIGHT ABOUT NOW!
GOD OF SEVEN
OPEN UP THE WINDOWS OF HEAVEN
AND POUR OUT A RICH AND MIGHTY BLESSING
NOT ON HIS TOWN, OR HER TOWN
BUT YOUR TOWN!
ARE YOU READY FOR THE MESSAGE?
I HAVE A SPECIAL FINANCIAL BLESSING THAT ONCE I HAVE PLACED IN YOUR HAND
I WANT YOU TO BEGIN USING THIS BLESSING ON THE VERY FIRST DAY THAT YOU
CAN
AND IF YOU ARE SUFFERING A STRANGE SICKNESS
OR SOMEONE IS BLOCKING UP ALL OF YOUR SUCCESS
YOU NEED TO SEE ME RIGHT AWAY SO I CAN FIX THIS!
SIGNED SINCERELY,
YOURS IN FAITH, LOVE AND PEACE
YOUR FRIEND
