Temple Ewell is a civil parish and historic village in the county of Kent, England. The village is part of the Dover district of Kent, and forms part of the Dover urban area, it is situated three miles North West of the town of Dover.
Situated in the Dour valley, Temple Ewell is surrounded by nature reserves and conservation areas. The village has a parish church, a village hall and a primary school. It also has a local shop and post office, and an 18th-century public house.
The 2001 Census records a population of 1,696 for Temple Ewell, falling to 1,669 at the 2011 Census.
Toponymy
The name Ewell is derived from the Old English word ǣwielm, meaning river source or spring, and is so called because one of the sources of the River Dour rises on the village outskirts at a place called Watersend and flows through the village towards Dover. The prefix Temple indicates that at one time the village was owned by the Knights Templar.
Ewell/ˈjuːᵊl/ is a suburban area in the borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey with a largely commercial village centre. Apart from this it has named neighbourhoods: West Ewell, Ewell Court, East Ewell, Ewell Grove, and Ewell Downs. One rural locality on the slopes of the North Downs is also a neighbourhood, North Looe. Remaining a large parish, Ewell occupies approximately the north-eastern half of the borough minus Stoneleigh.
The name Ewell derives from Old Englishæwell, which means river source or spring.
Bronze Age remains have been found in Ewell and the Romans are likely to have encountered an existing religious site when they first arrived leaving pottery, bones, and a few other remains, which have been taken to the British Museum. Ewell is on a long line of spring line settlements founded along the foot of hills on a geological line between the chalk of the North Downs to the south, and the clay of the London Basin to the north.
A new promotional film created by @UniCreativeArts to showcase Epsom and Ewell as a unique place to live, work and study. Special thanks go to Vice Chancellor Bashir Makhoul, Andy Blair (Director of Marketing, UCA) and Epsom-born Warwick Davis for his voice-over talents and support for this fantastic community project.

Exploring EWELL | Surrey
In this Vlog I’m exploring the Village of Ewell in Surrey, a once rural Hamlet now engulfed by Greater London and the sprawl of suburbia. An ancient settlement grown out of it’s Ancient Spring, Ewell still holds onto much of its historic past (amongst the constant traffic travelling through) as I find out walking around and discovering its rich heritage.

Big Ben actually refers to the massive bell inside the Elizabeth Tower, not the clock itself! Completed in 1859, this London icon weighs over 13 tons and chimes every hour with remarkable accuracy.

Dana Ewell (born January 28, 1971, Fresno, California) is an American convicted triple murderer, sentenced to three life sentences for ordering the killing of his mother, father, and sister in 1992.
Dana Ewell's father, businessman and multi-millionaire Dale Ewell, his mother Glee (née Mitchell), and his older sister Tiffany were murdered so he could access the family fortune. A 9-mm pistol with a homemade silencer was used by Ewell's roommate at Santa Clara University, Joel Radovcich, to murder the family on Easter Sunday in their home in the Central Valley as they returned from a long weekend on the coast.
Dana Ewell was sentenced on May 12, 1998, alongside friend and classmate Joel Radovcich, who was promised a part of the family fortune in return for murdering Dana's family.
Ernest Jack Ponce (who procured the murder weapon) was also charged with the murders, but he obtained a dismissal in exchange for his testimony and was later licensed as an attorney.
At the time of the murders, Dana Ewell still lived at home in the family's comfortable Sunnyside-area home near Fresno. In his freshman year at San Joaquin Memorial High School, Ewell claimed his goal was to be a multi-millionaire by age 25, but at age 21, he was still being supported by his parents. The murders took place on Sunday, April 19, 1992.
Dana had been lying to his friends, claiming that he was personally financially successful. Dana claimed to be a stock-market wiz and he also claimed to own his own airplane transport company. Dana's father found out that his son had been going around lying and bragging. Dana's father told him that he was getting cut off financially that summer, when he was expected to graduate from Santa Clara University.
Dana was angry and this is what led him to plot the murders, although ironically it was ultimately revealed to Dana during the reading of his father's will that his father instructed that the family fortune be given to Dana but in installments. Ewell's furious reaction to not gaining his full inheritance and his lack of grief over the deaths of his parents and sister led to his uncles informing investigators about the possibility that Dana was behind the murders.
Fresno County Assistant District Attorneys James Oppliger and Jeffrey Hammerschmidt prosecuted Ewell and Radovcich in a jury trial that took more than eight months. Ewell and Radovcich are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole; their appeals have all been denied and exhausted. Ewell is housed in the Protective Housing Unit of California State Prison, Corcoran.

Ewell was founded as a spring line settlement, where the permeable chalk of the North Downs meets the impermeable London Clay, and the Hogsmill River (a tributary of the River Thames) still rises at a spring close to Bourne Hall in the village centre. Recorded in Domesday Book as Etwelle, the settlement was granted a licence to hold a market in 1618. The opening of railway stations to the east and west of the centre, in 1847 and 1859 respectively, facilitated the creation of extensive residential areas, which are now contiguous with the Greater London suburbs.

Ewell is a suburban area with a village centre in the borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey, approximately 12 miles (19 km) south of central London and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northeast of Epsom. In the 2011 Census, the settlement had a population of 34,872, a majority of which (73%) is in the ABC1 social class, except the Ruxley Ward that is C2DE.
“Think Big Ben is just a clock? Think again!”
Big Ben actually refers to the massive bell inside the Elizabeth Tower, not the clock itself! Completed in 1859, this London icon weighs over 13 tons and chimes every hour with remarkable accuracy.
The tower stands 96 meters tall (316 feet) and survived bombings during World War II, making it a symbol of resilience. Fun fact: The clock mechanism is wound by hand three times a week!
Next time you see Big Ben, remember—it’s more than just a clock; it’s history ticking away. Have you heard its famous chime?
