Kenya: Did William Ruto Plan to Eliminate His Deputy? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
The conflict between Kenyan President William Ruto and his ousted Deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, continues to escalate. Gachagua has accused Ruto of attempting to assassinate him twice through food poisoning. Last week, Gachagua was impeached following deepening disagreements with the President. After his security detail was withdrawn, Gachagua warned that Ruto would be held responsible if anything were to happen to him. “I did not know that President William Ruto could be that vicious," he said.

On patrol with Kenyan police in gang-terrorized Haitian capital | DW News
Haiti is one of the world's poorest countries and has seen an upsurge in killings, rapes and kidnappings since the 2021 assasination of President Jovenel Moïse.
Violent gangs control large areas of the capital Port-au-Prince, terrorizing civilians. The UN says more than 3,600 people have been killed in gang violence this year alone.
In 2023, the UN mandated an international security support mission, led by the Kenyan police. 2,500 police officers were expected, but only 400 Kenyans arrived three months ago.
They’ve made some gains, but the task is risky. DW correspondent Mariel Mueller got exclusive access and went on patrol with the Kenyan police, in Port-au-Prince.

What led to Kenya’s deputy president's impeachment? BBC Africa
Kenya has witnessed its first-ever impeachment proceedings against a deputy president, Rigathi Gachagua, who faced serious allegations that saw him permanently barred from holding public office. The accusations included corruption, undermining the authority of the president, and inciting ethnic divisions - all of which he denies. The BBC’s Jewel Kiriungi takes a closer look at how events unfolded.

After centuries of colonizing much of the world, the British Empire began its fast descent in the 1960s amid a global wave of independence movements. But when Queen Elizabeth II died in 2022, she was not only still queen of 14 countries besides the United Kingdom, she was also still the leader of an organization that on a map looks a lot like the British Empire.
The British Empire created the first iteration of the Commonwealth to appease white settler colonies looking for more autonomy. It granted them more independence to govern themselves but kept them under the crown. As British leaders realized their power might be at risk throughout their colonies worldwide, the ...

Dismantle the Commonwealth: Queen Elizabeth's Death Prompts Reckoning with Colonial Past in Africa
The death of Queen Elizabeth II has focused global attention on the British royal family and renewed criticism of the monarchy both inside the U.K. and abroad, especially among peoples colonized by Britain. "There's a degree of psychosis that you can go to another people's land, colonize them, and then expect them to honor you at the same time," says Kenyan American author Mukoma Wa Ngugi, who teaches literature at Cornell University and whose own family was deeply impacted by the bloody British suppression of the Mau Mau revolution. He says that with Queen Elizabeth's death, there needs to be a "dismantling" of the Commonwealth and a real reckoning with colonial abuses. We also speak with Harvard historian Caroline Elkins, a leading scholar of British colonialism, who says that while it's...

Debate On Monarchy's Ties To Commonwealth Reignited After Queen Death
During Queen Elizabeth II's reign, British soldiers committed widespread atrocities against Kenyans at the height of the Mau Mau uprising between 1952 and 1960. Roughly 1.5 million people were forced into concentration camps, subjected to torture, rape and other violation. It's little wonder that on the streets of Nairobi, people's memories of colonial Britain — an empire fundamentally connected to monarchy — are not often positive. #queenelizabeth #britishsoldiers #kenya #newsy

As British leaders realized their power might be at risk throughout their colonies worldwide, the monarchy made a play to keep ties and preserve their global influence by allowing newly independent republics to join the Commonwealth too. The only catch: They had to accept the queen as the leader of the organization. With the death of Queen Elizabeth II, this vestige of the British Empire is now under the leadership of King Charles III. So, what exactly is the Commonwealth? Why is it still here? And will it survive?
Correction: A previous version of this video mistakenly showed Myanmar as a member of the Commonwealth on a 1994 map, mislabeled Sierra Leone and Gold Coast for a brief moment on a 1927 map, and omitted Greenland, all of which have now been corrected.
We have also clarified that India became a republic shortly after independence with a new line of narration at 3:12; corrected Queen Elizabeth II’s title at 00:16 and 00:47; and updated the date Barbados became a republic from November 29, 2021, to November 30, 2021.

Time Come? The Persistence and Future of the Commonwealth Realms
Professor Philip Murphy
(Director, Institute of Commonwealth Studies)
This is a plenary lecture by Professor Murphy entitled 'Time Come? The Persistence and Future of the Commonwealth Realms', which was prepared for the conference on 'The Crown in the 21st Century', which took place in Government House in Victoria, Canada from 14-16 January 2016.
Unforeseen circumstances meant that Professor Murphy was not able to attend the conference in person. In the lecture, he seeks to explain why so few Commonwealth Realms have made the transition to republics over the previous 40 years, examining the constitutional and political obstacles in the way of republicanism.

We also speak with Harvard historian Caroline Elkins, a leading scholar of British colonialism, who says that while it's unclear how much Queen Elizabeth personally knew about concentration camps, torture and other abuses in Kenya during her early reign, the monarchy must reckon with that legacy. "Serious crimes happened on the queen's imperial watch. In fact, her picture hung in every detention camp in Kenya as detainees were beaten in order to exact their loyalty to the British crown," says Elkins.
