From 1763 until his death in 1806, Johann Michael Haydn worked in the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg – almost as long a period of service as that of his brother Joseph to the princely family in Esterhazy. During the course of those 43 years, he bridged the stylistic gap between early Classicism and the Biedermeier style. Indeed, he was initially regarded by contemporaries as equal in talent to Joseph. Only the older brother’s steep rise to become the most important instrumental composer of his day somewhat overshadowed Johann Michael Haydn. In recent years his music has been rediscovered, and he has increasingly been recognized again. His output includes more than thirty works in Latin or German for two or three lines of upper voices, composed for his ‘dear choirboys’ singing at the cathedral in Salzburg. The first setting of the ordinary in this series was the Missa Sancti Aloysii, composed in 1777. It was initially intended for the Commemoration of the Holy Innocents on 28 December, when the chapel boys celebrated their principal feast day. This exceptionally charming mass is marked throughout by a wonderfully effervescent sense of joy.
At the other end of his career, the Missa sub titulo Sti. Leopoldi pro festo Innocentium was Michael Haydn’s last completed work, finished on 22 December 1805 in time to celebrate the same feast day as the earlier Mass, despite the composer’s ill health, and drawing strength (according to the composer) from the optimistic character of his pupils. Complementing these two Mass settings, the Accademia Vocale di Genova and Roberta Paraninfo present a complete recording of the Vespers which Haydn wrote for the Feast of the Holy Innocents in 1787.
Though these attractive choral rarities have been recorded before, this is the only album to present all three complementary works together, and in modern recordings informed by the scale and performance practice which the composer himself would have known. Roberta Paraninfo founded the Accademia Vocale di Genova in 1995, and they have specialised ever since then in choral works of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods.

*(All movements without intermission)
The Symphony No. 12 in D minor, Op. 112, was composed in 1960-1961 and is dedicated to the memory of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. Shostakovich programatically entitled it "The Year 1917", and the titles of the four movements have also reference to the events of that year:
1. Revolutionary Petrograd; 2. Razliv; 3. Aurora; 4. The Dawn of Humanity. The title of the second movement is the name of the place near which Lenin stayed in hiding, that of the third the name of the legendary battle cruiser "Aurora" whose broadside meant the starting shot of the Revolution, on October 25th, 1917.
The idea of a symphony with Lenin as subject had been on Shostakovich's mind for decades but he changed his plans several times. Lenin's death in 1924 became the decisive impulse. But it was only in 1940 that his future work assumed more concrete forms in his imagination; he conceived it as a symphonic vocal cycle in four movements: "The first movement will deal with Vladimir Ilyich's youth, the second with Lenin as the leader of the October Revolution, the third with Vladimir Ilyich's death, and the fourth with life without Lenin, but on his way, in his spirit. I already have a number of musical fragments which will be part of this work." Originally, the composer had planned to use excerpts from poetic text of his work; he also wanted to incorporate in his symphony popular songs about Lenin, but his plans were thwarted when World War II broke out.
Only twenty years later, Shostakovich resumed his interrupted work. In a broadcast on October 29th, 1960, he relates to the development of his work and his motivation: "I myself have been witness of the events of the October Revolution. I was one of those listening to Vladimir Ilyich on the square in front of the Finland Railway Station on the day of his arrival. And though I was quite young then, this has mad an indelible impression on my mind. My memories of these unforgettable days do of course help me in my work." The composer completed the full score of the symphony - meanwhile a merely instrumental one - on August 22nd, 1961.
The Twelfth Symphony was first performed on October 1st, 1961, in Leningrad, by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra; its first performance in Moscow, by the State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR took place two weeks later.

---
Frederick William (Friedrich Wilhelm) Herschel
(Hanover, 15 November 1738 - Slough, 25 August 1822)
German-English composer, astronomer, biologist, organist, and conductor. The son of an oboist in a military band, Isaac Herschel (1707-1767), he was trained by his father, later joining his elder brother Jacob Herschel in the band. In 1755 a tour to England convinced him that his future lay in the country. In 1757 he immigrated permanently, eventually becoming a violinist in the Newcastle orchestra under Charles Avison. After similar positions in Halifax and Leeds, he succeeded in 1767 in becoming the organist at the Octagon Chapel in Bath, where he remained the rest of his life. In 1780 he became the conductor of the Bath orchestra, overseeing the public concerts. Herschel is best known for his work as an astronomer, including discoveries of the planet Uranus and being a founding member of what became the Royal Astronomical Society. He was also a biologist who published on the cellular construction of coral. As a composer, he was well regarded during his lifetime for his progressive and inventive works, particularly his symphonies. Stylistically these are similar to Joseph Haydn in style. The works include 24 symphonies, 12 concertos (for viola, violin, oboe, and organ), 45 voluntaries, 24 caprices and a sonata for solo violin, six trio sonatas, three keyboard sonatas, a complete Anglican service, and numerous Psalms and anthems.
