Michael Haydn
Johann Michael Haydn (German: [ˈhaɪdən]; 14 September 1737 – 10 August 1806) was an Austrian composer of the Classical period, the younger brother of Joseph Haydn.
Life
Michael Haydn was born in 1737 in the Austrian village of Rohrau, near the Hungarian border. His father was Mathias Haydn, a wheelwright who also served as "Marktrichter", an office akin to village mayor. Haydn's mother Maria, maiden name Koller, had previously worked as a cook in the palace of Count Harrach, the presiding aristocrat of Rohrau. Mathias was an enthusiastic folk musician, who during the journeyman period of his career had taught himself to play the harp, and he also made sure that his children learned to sing; for details see Mathias Haydn.
Michael's early professional career path was paved by his older brother Joseph, whose skillful singing had landed him a position as a boy soprano in the St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna choir under the direction of Georg Reutter, as were Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and Franz Joseph Aumann, both composers with whom Haydn later traded manuscripts. The early 19th-century author Albert Christoph Dies, based on Joseph's late-life reminiscences, wrote:

Trumpet concerto
A trumpet concerto is a concerto for solo trumpet and instrumental ensemble, customarily the orchestra. Such works have been written from the Baroque period, when the solo concerto form was first developed, up through the present day. Some major composers have contributed to the trumpet concerto repertoire, with the best known work being Joseph Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E-flat.
Traditionally a three-movement work, the modern-day trumpet concerto has occasionally been structured in four or more movements. In some trumpet concertos, especially from the Baroque and modern eras, the trumpet is accompanied by a chamber ensemble rather than an orchestra.

Trumpet Concerto (Haydn)
Joseph Haydn's Concerto per il Clarino, (Hob.: VIIe/1) (Trumpet Concerto in E flat major) was written in 1796 for his long-time friend Anton Weidinger. Joseph Haydn was 64 years of age.
Original instrument
Anton Weidinger developed a keyed trumpet which could play chromatically throughout its entire range. Before this, the trumpet was valveless and could only play a limited range of harmonic notes by altering the vibration of the lips; also called by the name of natural trumpet. Most of these harmonic notes were clustered in the higher registers, so previous trumpet concertos could only play melodically with the high register (e.g., Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2). Haydn's concerto includes melodies in the middle and lower register, exploiting the capabilities of the new instrument.
There were attempts all over Europe around the mid-classical era to expand the range of the trumpet using valves, but Weidinger's idea of drilling holes and covering them with flute-like keys was not a success as it had very poor sound quality. Thus the natural trumpet still had continual use in the classical orchestra while the keyed trumpet had barely any repertoire. The valved trumpets used today were first constructed and used in the 1830s.

Trumpet Concerto (Leopold Mozart)
Leopold Mozart's Trumpet Concerto in D major was completed in 1762, and is now "popular with trumpeters." The work is in two movements:
Besides the solo trumpet in D, the concerto is scored for two horns in D and strings. Only the first movement provides room for a cadenza; the Gábor Darvas edition published by Editio Musica gives an 8-measure cadenza which requires no ledger lines but consistently involves small note values. In fact, in regards to range, the concerto is "cautious."

From 1763 until his death in 1806, Johann Michael Haydn worked in the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg – almost as long a period of service as that of his brother Joseph to the princely family in Esterhazy. During the course of those 43 years, he bridged the stylistic gap between early Classicism and the Biedermeier style. Indeed, he was initially regarded by contemporaries as equal in talent to Joseph. Only the older brother’s steep rise to become the most important instrumental composer of his day somewhat overshadowed Johann Michael Haydn. In recent years his music has been rediscovered, and he has increasingly been recognized again. His output includes more than thirty works in Latin or German for two or three lines of upper voices, composed for his ‘dear choirboys’ singing at the cathedral in Salzburg. The first setting of the ordinary in this series was the Missa Sancti Aloysii, composed in 1777. It was initially intended for the Commemoration of the Holy Innocents on 28 December, when the chapel boys celebrated their principal feast day. This exceptionally charming mass is marked throughout by a wonderfully effervescent sense of joy.
At the other end of his career, the Missa sub titulo Sti. Leopoldi pro festo Innocentium was Michael Haydn’s last completed work, finished on 22 December 1805 in time to celebrate the same feast day as the earlier Mass, despite the composer’s ill health, and drawing strength (according to the composer) from the optimistic character of his pupils. Complementing these two Mass settings, the Accademia Vocale di Genova and Roberta Paraninfo present a complete recording of the Vespers which Haydn wrote for the Feast of the Holy Innocents in 1787.
Though these attractive choral rarities have been recorded before, this is the only album to present all three complementary works together, and in modern recordings informed by the scale and performance practice which the composer himself would have known. Roberta Paraninfo founded the Accademia Vocale di Genova in 1995, and they have specialised ever since then in choral works of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods.

The world premiere (and possibly the only performance!) of He Is Armoured Without, by Peter Wiegold. This work was commissioned for the BBC Proms Brass Day on 28th July 2007 in the Royal Albert Hall, London and broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. On the stage was the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fanfare Trumpets of the Band of the Coldstream Guards, the karnays of the Uzbek group Tashkent (see the video Tashkent: Traditional Uzbek Music elsewhere in this playlist), and a band of trombones. In the centre of the arena were the soloists Torbjorn Hultmark (trumpet) and David Purser (trombone). The world premiere (and possibly the only performance!) of He Is Armoured Without, by Peter Wiegold.
This work was commissioned for the BBC Proms Brass Day on 28th July 2007 in the Royal Albert Hall, London and broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. On the stage was the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fanfare Trumpets of the Band of the Coldstream Guards, the karnays of the Uzbek group Tashkent (see the video Tashkent: Traditional Uzbek Music elsewhere in this playlist), and a band of trombones. In the centre of the arena were the soloists Torbjorn Hultmark (trumpet) and David Purser (trombone). In the gallery was a ring of trumpets (the 'seraphim'); in the arena was a ring of tubas (the 'tubaphim'). These latter three groups consisted of musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music, the Birmingham Conservatoire and individuals from London and the south east of England. In the middle of it all was the audience! The work doesn't contain any memorable melodies, but it was an extraordinary experience for anyone who was there.
The work is "a study of the sounds of war - the stupidity, the lust and the melancholy of war". Wiegold took as his starting point a quote from the Roman poet Horace: "He is armoured without, who is innocent within, let this be thy shield, thy wall of brass". He then created a narrative loosely involving the sorcerer Prospero from Shakespeare's play The Tempest, and some sections of the work are prefaced with Prospero's quotes. The role of the sorcerer is played by the solo trumpet while the solo trombone plays the part of a jester. The two protagonists are represented by the karnays of Tashkent and the fanfare trumpets of the Coldstream Guards.

Wiegold took as his starting point a quote from the Roman poet Horace: "He is armoured without, who is innocent within, let this be thy shield, thy wall of brass". He then created a narrative loosely involving the sorcerer Prospero from Shakespeare's play The Tempest, and some sections of the work are prefaced with Prospero's quotes. The role of the sorcerer is played by the solo trumpet while the solo trombone plays the part of a jester. The two protagonists are represented by the karnays of Tashkent and the fanfare trumpets of the Coldstream Guards.

From 1763 until his death in 1806, Johann Michael Haydn worked in the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg – almost as long a period of service as that of his brother Joseph to the princely family in Esterhazy. During the course of those 43 years, he bridged the stylistic gap between early Classicism and the Biedermeier style. Indeed, he was initially regarded by contemporaries as equal in talent to Joseph. Only the older brother’s steep rise to become the most important instrumental composer of his day somewhat overshadowed Johann Michael Haydn. In recent years his music has been rediscovered, and he has increasingly been recognized again. His output includes more than thirty works in Latin or German for two or three lines of upper voices, composed for his ‘dear choirboys’ singing at the cathedral in Salzburg. The first setting of the ordinary in this series was the Missa Sancti Aloysii, composed in 1777. It was initially intended for the Commemoration of the Holy Innocents on 28 December, when the chapel boys celebrated their principal feast day. This exceptionally charming mass is marked throughout by a wonderfully effervescent sense of joy.
At the other end of his career, the Missa sub titulo Sti. Leopoldi pro festo Innocentium was Michael Haydn’s last completed work, finished on 22 December 1805 in time to celebrate the same feast day as the earlier Mass, despite the composer’s ill health, and drawing strength (according to the composer) from the optimistic character of his pupils. Complementing these two Mass settings, the Accademia Vocale di Genova and Roberta Paraninfo present a complete recording of the Vespers which Haydn wrote for the Feast of the Holy Innocents in 1787.
Though these attractive choral rarities have been recorded before, this is the only album to present all three complementary works together, and in modern recordings informed by the scale and performance practice which the composer himself would have known. Michael Haydn
Johann Michael Haydn (German: [ˈhaɪdən]; 14 September 1737 – 10 August 1806) was an Austrian composer of the Classical period, the younger brother of Joseph Haydn.
Life
Michael Haydn was born in 1737 in the Austrian village of Rohrau, near the Hungarian border. His father was Mathias Haydn, a wheelwright who also served as "Marktrichter", an office akin to village mayor. Haydn's mother Maria, maiden name Koller, had previously worked as a cook in the palace of Count Harrach, the presiding aristocrat of Rohrau. Mathias was an enthusiastic folk musician, who during the journeyman period of his career had taught himself to play the harp, and he also made sure that his children learned to sing; for details see Mathias Haydn.
Michael's early professional career path was paved by his older brother Joseph, whose skillful singing had landed him a position as a boy soprano in the St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna choir under the direction of Georg Reutter, as were Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and Franz Joseph Aumann, both composers with whom Haydn later traded manuscripts. The early 19th-century author Albert Christoph Dies, based on Joseph's late-life reminiscences, wrote:

The world premiere (and possibly the only performance!) of He Is Armoured Without, by Peter Wiegold.
This work was commissioned for the BBC Proms Brass Day on 28th July 2007 in the Royal Albert Hall, London and broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. On the stage was the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fanfare Trumpets of the Band of the Coldstream Guards, the karnays of the Uzbek group Tashkent (see the video Tashkent: Traditional Uzbek Music elsewhere in this playlist), and a band of trombones. In the centre of the arena were the soloists Torbjorn Hultmark (trumpet) and David Purser (trombone). In the gallery was a ring of trumpets (the 'seraphim'); in the arena was a ring of tubas (the 'tubaphim'). These latter three groups consisted of musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music, the Birmingham Conservatoire and individuals from London and the south east of England. In the middle of it all was the audience! The work doesn't contain any memorable melodies, but it was an extraordinary experience for anyone who was there.
The work is "a study of the sounds of war - the stupidity, the lust and the melancholy of war". Wiegold took as his starting point a quote from the Roman poet Horace: "He is armoured without, who is innocent within, let this be thy shield, thy wall of brass". He then created a narrative loosely involving the sorcerer Prospero from Shakespeare's play The Tempest, and some sections of the work are prefaced with Prospero's quotes. The role of the sorcerer is played by the solo trumpet while the solo trombone plays the part of a jester. The two protagonists are represented by the karnays of Tashkent and the fanfare trumpets of the Coldstream Guards.
