World's Most Beautiful Railway - The Bernina Express
Shortly after the construction of the Gotthard tunnel, Switzerland pulled off another pioneering achievement: the construction of the Thusis - St. Moritz railway line between 1899 and 1903. This opened the Upper Engadine to tourists. The Rhaetian Railway still passes over the same bridges and through the same loop tunnels. A still greater challenge was the subsequent construction of the Bernina Railway. No other railway in the world overcomes such steep gradients and winds through such steep curves without the help of a cogwheel.

The electrical gear was as far as possible identical to ABDe 4/4 484-486 from 1957/58. After the change to ac 487 and 488 were sold to CJ where they pulled waste container trains. They are just now being replaced by the second-hand motor coaches that CJ bought from FW. After 40 years at
the end of their career is quite early for Swiss motor coaches but
considering the age of some parts of the electrical gear (freshed up parts from old motor coach 487' ex 486') it's a good age.
Behind the ABe 4/4 there is D2 4054, a wooden luggage van with
underframe from 1897 that had been fitted with dc heating and MU wiring in 1974 to replace even older D 4002 as a reserve van. Next is one of the peak traffic coaches (Spitzenverkehrswagen) B 2269-2273, built in 1987 on old underframes (except 2272-73) and bogies with components from bus building. Last coach is one of the aluminium EW I B 2315-2319 that were always assigned to the Arosa line and were MU wired right from the beginning and thus delivered in red in 1969.
The use of such a consist in regular trains indicates that one of the three driving trailers was in Landquart. The full use of regenerative braking requires the coaches to be at the down-side from the motor coach.
Normal Summer consist was ABDe or ABe 481-488 - DZ 4231-31/4004 - B 2315-19 - ABt 1701-03
In Winter an additional A 1253-56 (GEX coaches in Summer) was put in and often a second ABDe or ABe added (in MU, of course) so that additional coaches could have been pulled up to Arosa.
Additional trains were handled by the remaining ABDe/ABe 481-488 or by Bernina ABe 4/4 30..34 that could be switched for use under 2200 V dc. You can see two of them at 21:03 on the right hand side.
The Arosabahn trains were equipped with
- vacuum brakes for the whole train (but on the motor coach the vacuum pipe actuated the air brake with a special valve)
- regenerative brake
- rheostatic brake (at moments where it was impossible to feed back current to the catenary)
- direct air brake for motor coach and driving trailer only
- electro magnetic rail brake fed by a battery, on motor coach only
- and yes, each vehicle had a hand brake (only used for parking)...

Inaugurated in 1888 and expanded from 1896 onwards in various sections, the RhB network is located almost entirely within Grisons, with one station across the Italian border at Tirano.
The Rhaetian Railway serves a number of major tourist destinations, such as St. Moritz and Davos. One of the RhB lines, the Bernina Railway, crosses the Bernina Pass at 2,254 metres (7,395 ft) above sea level and runs down to Tirano, Lombardy in Italy.
In 2008, the RhB section from the Albula/Bernina area (the part from Thusis to Tirano, including St. Moritz) was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Albula-Bernina line is the first rail line in the world to be photographed and put on Google Street View. The line also operates several historic trains on the network.
The Glacier Express (GEX) is a direct train connecting railway stations of the two major mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz via Andermatt in the central Swiss Alps. The train is not an "express" in the sense of being a high-speed train, but rather, in the sense that it provides a one-seat ride for an 8-hours-long end-to-end 291 km (181 mi) journey, and omits stops made by local trains. The Glacier Express is known as the slowest express train in the world. As St. Moritz and Zermatt are home to two well-known mountains, the Glacier Express is also said to travel from Matterhorn to Piz Bernina.

Samedan (altitude: 1721 m) is a town in Oberengadin, canton of Grisons, Switzerland. We start our trip here and travel with the Rhaetian Railway to Landquart through the Vereina tunnel (19 km long). Rhaetian Railway (or short RhB) is a swiss transport company with headquarters in Chur.
The Rhaetian Railway (RhB) is a Swiss transport company that owns the largest network of all private railway operators in Switzerland. The RhB operates all the railway lines of the Swiss canton of Graubuenden. Inaugurated in 1888 and expanded from 1896 onwards in various sections, the Rhaetian Railway serves a number of major tourist destinations, such as St. Moritz and Davos. On the model railway layout, we see the RhB station in Alp Gruem, Swiss landscapes and model trains made by BEMO. All Rhaetian Railway lines are 1,000 mm (3 feet 3 3⁄8 in) metre gauge wide and electrified. In 1/87 rail transport modelling scale, these 1,000 mm railway lines are called H0m or HOn3½ with a track gauge of 12 mm (0.472 in).

The Rhaetian Railway (German: Rhätische Bahn; Italian: Ferrovia retica; Romansh: Viafier retica), abbreviated RhB, is a Swiss transport company that owns the largest network of all private railway operators in Switzerland. Headquartered in Chur, the RhB operates all the railway lines of the Swiss canton of Grisons, except for the line from Sargans to the cantonal capital, Chur, which are operated by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS), as well as the line from Disentis/Mustér to the Oberalp Pass and further on to Andermatt, Uri, which is operated by Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB).

There's a voice inside our soul Calling out so we don't fall Nothing's lost that can't be found Ain't a thing you can't get 'round Turn it into something good There's a chance you really could Turn it into something special When you see it's time to choose Gonna find you'll never lose Turn it into something special When your calm is broken too And you don't know what to do Hold your fire and look above Take the flame don't put it out Turn it into something good There's a chance you really could Turn it into something special When you see it's time to choose Gonna find you'll never lose Turn it into something special Just believe in something new We all have our part to do Turn it into something special And you'd still be standing strong Hold your crown and carry on Turn it into something special When you know right from the start Gonna play it from the heart Take a chance and make things better Leave the fears and doubts behind Don't give in just keep on tryin' Turn it into something special Mmmmm. mmmmm... uuuuuu... Turn it into something good There's a chance you really could Turn it into something special When you see it's time to choose Gonna find you'll never lose Turn it into something special Turn it into something new We all have our part to do take a chance and make it special And you'd still be standing strong Hold your crown and carry on Turn it into something... Just believe in something Naa naa naa na na naa. Just believe in something, yea yea. Naa naa naa na na naa. We gotta carry on, we gotta carry on and on. Naa naa naa na na naa. Oo oo oo ooooo.
