SR 79 begins at exit 40 of I-8, about 40 miles (64km) from its western terminus and approximately 35 miles (56km) east of San Diego. The road runs along Old Highway 80 in the town of Descanso, until splitting to the north at a T intersection. The route then traverses Cuyamaca and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park on its way north. This portion of the route is very serpentine, with hairpin turns, as it follows the contours of the land by moving laterally, rather than up-and-down or via cuts.
It then overlaps SR 78 between Santa Ysabel and Julian, a distance of about eight miles (13km). At Julian, both routes join at a T intersection just south of town, thus requiring a turn to stay on SR 79, and turn at an intersection in the northern portion of downtown. At Santa Ysabel, SR 79 comes to a T intersection with SR 78 running east–west. SR 79 continues northwest, meeting the eastern terminus of SR 76 near Lake Henshaw at the settlement of Morettis and passing through Warner Springs before crossing into Riverside County. SR 79 then meets the southern terminus of SR 371 before going through Aguanga.

SR 62
State Route 62 extended south along current secondary SR 744 from US 58 (now US 58 Business) east of Ewing to the Tennessee state line, continuing as an unnumbered county road in the direction of Alanthus Hill and Tennessee State Route 63. It was added to the state highway system in 1928 as State Route 101, changed to SR 62 in the 1933 renumbering, and downgraded to secondary in 1942.
SR 63
State Route 63 extended south along current secondary SR 758 from US 58 between Beech Spring and Jonesville across the Powell River on Flanary Bridge to the Tennessee state line, continuing as an unnumbered county road in the direction of Tennessee State Route 63 at Mulberry Gap. 6.2 miles (10.0km) of road, a majority of the route, was added to the state highway system in 1928 as State Route 102, which was extended another 1.2 miles (1.9km) in 1930. In the 1933 renumbering, SR 102 became SR 63, which was extended the final 1⁄2 mile (0.80km) to the state line in October 1933 and downgraded to secondary in 1946.

SR 34
State Route 34 is the designation for Hodges Street, which runs 0.54 miles (0.87km) from SR 129 east to US 360 within the town of South Boston.
SR 73
State Route 73 is the designation for the portion of Parham Road between US 1 and I-95 near the Chamberlayne area of Henrico. Parham Road is a four-lane divided highway that passes along the west and north side of Richmond from SR 150 near the James River to US 301 just south of I-295. SR 73 was planned and built as a simple trumpet connection between I-95 and US 1; the number was assigned in 1958. The road was completed in 1962; the extension of Parham Road east from I-95 opened in 1978.
SR 79
State Route 79 is the designation for Apple Mountain Road, a 0.23-mile (0.37km) connector between SR 55 and a diamond interchange with I-66 in Linden.
