Sport Relief is a biennial charity event from Comic Relief, in association with BBC Sport, which brings together the worlds of sport and entertainment to raise money to help vulnerable people in both the UK and the world's poorest countries. At the heart of the campaign is the "Sport Relief Mile", which involves members of the public doing their bit for charity.
Comic Relief teamed up with the newly established Sport Relief initiative in 2002 and alternates with Sport Relief, airing every second year in March.
On television
Like Comic Relief, the television programming begins in the afternoon, with CBBC having various related reports and money raising events. This is all in-between the regular programmes, but after the six o'clock news, the usual BBC One schedule is suspended at 7pm in favour of a live telethon, with a break at 10pm for the regular news programme. However, whilst the BBC News at Ten is aired on BBC One, Sport Relief continues on BBC Two, and then resumes on BBC One at 10:35pm, with each hour overseen by a different celebrity team. These celebrities do the work for free, as do the crew, with studio space and production facilities donated by the BBC.
Sport Relief 2012 has been a fund raising event organised by Comic Relief. It was broadcast on BBC One and BBC Two on the evening of 23 March 2012 from 7:00pm to 1:45am live from the BBC Television Centre. The TV event raised a massive £50,447,197, which is the highest figure ever raised.
Before/after the live event
In the autumn of 2011, David Walliams swam 140 miles (230km) of The Thames in eight days. During the eight days Walliams suffered from illness and flu. Walliams took time to recover after the event due to the intake of Thames water that contained bacteria and sewage. He swam a total distance in eight days, a total of 111,352 strokes were swam and 68,186 calories were burnt. So far he has raised £1,194,258 for Sport Relief.
Fearless Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton made it to the South Pole in just 18 days by ski, bike and kite, bringing her epic, 500 miles (800km) Antarctic expedition to a triumphant close. For this gruelling challenge, she travelled up to 14 hours a day across the coldest and windiest place on earth, battling blizzards and sub-zero temperatures. It was shown for 9 weeks on Mondays on BBC1 at 4:30pm and an adult version was shown on the Fridays on BBC1 at 8:30pm before the main event.
Sport Relief 2014 is a fundraising event organised by Sport Relief. A number of run-up events took place and the main event consisted of a live telethon broadcast on BBC One and BBC Two from the evening of Friday 21 March 2014 to early the following morning. Due to the closure of BBC Television Centre, the live studio event is now broadcast from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.
