Special Protection Group

The Special Protection Group (SPG) (Hindi: विशेष सुरक्षा दल) is a security force of India formed in 1988 by an act of the Parliament of India for "providing proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and former Prime Minister of India and members of their immediate families". Family members of a serving Prime Minister (PM) may decline security. Former PMs and their immediate family members may also, if they choose, decline SPG security.

The "general superitendence, direction and control" of the SPG is exercised by, the Central Government. The head of the force, called a Director, is appointed by the Central Govt. He is responsible for "the command and supervision" of the force. The director of the SPG since its inception has been an officer from the Indian Police service. Personnel of the Special Protection Group are drawn from Central Armed Police Forces & Railway Protection Force.

They are generally armed with FN F2000 Assault Rifles and Glock 17 Pistols (hidden in their suits) and are well connected with the rest of the security detail, through a myriad of communication devices. The CATs usually form the second cordon. They are tasked with providing 'suppressing and covering' firepower to allow enough time for the Protective Detail to get the PM to safety, in case of any eventuality. It is a defensive force which always follow the PM in his motorcade and are in position well before the PM arrives at his destination.

Protecting group

A protecting group or protective group is introduced into a molecule by chemical modification of a functional group to obtain chemoselectivity in a subsequent chemical reaction. It plays an important role in multistep organic synthesis.

In many preparations of delicate organic compounds, some specific parts of their molecules cannot survive the required reagents or chemical environments. Then, these parts, or groups, must be protected. For example, lithium aluminium hydride is a highly reactive but useful reagent capable of reducing esters to alcohols. It will always react with carbonyl groups, and this cannot be discouraged by any means. When a reduction of an ester is required in the presence of a carbonyl, the attack of the hydride on the carbonyl has to be prevented. For example, the carbonyl is converted into an acetal, which does not react with hydrides. The acetal is then called a protecting group for the carbonyl. After the step involving the hydride is complete, the acetal is removed (by reacting it with an aqueous acid), giving back the original carbonyl. This step is called deprotection.

It was formed in 1988 by an act of the Parliament of India whereas the former prime minister is given Z+ security instead of SPG. Generally, SPG Special Agents assigned to the Prime Ministerial Security wear black Western-style formal business suits, with dark sunglasses, a 2-way encrypted communication earpiece, and concealed handguns. Rarely, on traditional occasions, they wear safari suits to blend into the environment. SPG Uniformed Officers are dressed like Special operations commandos, with much more noticeable armament. Their personal equipment include ultra-modern assault rifles, dark-visor goggles/sunglasses with inbuilt communication earpieces, bulletproof vests, gloves and elbow/knee pads. Weapons Carried by SPG personnels are - 1)Uniformed Officers carry FN Herstal F2000 and Glock 17 or 19. 2)Special Agents carry FN Herstal Five-seveN, FN Herstal P90 and Glock 17 or 19. The Prime Minister's motorcade comprises a fleet of vehicles, the core of which consists of at least three armoured BMW 7 Series sedans, two armoured Range Rovers, at least 8-10 BMW X5s, six Toyota Fortuners/Land Cruisers and at least two Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ambulances, besides many more escort vehicles a Tata Safari ECM car also accompanies the convoy which is used to counter guided attacks, such as IEDs, Rocket Propelled Grenades, and Anti-Tank Guided Missiles. The antennas mounted on the roof are solely used in barrage jamming applications, the primary method used to counter IED threats. There are two dome-shaped EW Sensors. Their personal equipment include ultra-modern assault rifles, dark-visor goggles/sunglasses with inbuilt communication earpieces, bulletproof vests, gloves and elbow/knee pads. Weapons Carried by SPG personnels are - 1)Uniformed Officers carry FN Herstal F2000 and Glock 17 or 19. 2)Special Agents carry FN Herstal Five-seveN, FN Herstal P90 and Glock 17 or 19. The Prime Minister's motorcade comprises a fleet of vehicles, the core of which consists of at least three armoured BMW 7 Series sedans, two armoured Range Rovers, at least 8-10 BMW X5s, six Toyota Fortuners/Land Cruisers and at least two Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ambulances, besides many more escort vehicles a Tata Safari ECM car also accompanies the convoy which is used to counter guided attacks, such as IEDs, Rocket Propelled Grenades, and Anti-Tank Guided Missiles. The antennas mounted on the roof are solely used in barrage jamming applications, the primary method used to counter IED threats. There are two dome-shaped EW Sensors. Special Protection Group

The Special Protection Group (SPG) (Hindi: विशेष सुरक्षा दल) is a security force of India formed in 1988 by an act of the Parliament of India for "providing proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and former Prime Minister of India and members of their immediate families". Family members of a serving Prime Minister (PM) may decline security. Former PMs and their immediate family members may also, if they choose, decline SPG security.

The "general superitendence, direction and control" of the SPG is exercised by, the Central Government. The head of the force, called a Director, is appointed by the Central Govt. He is responsible for "the command and supervision" of the force. The director of the SPG since its inception has been an officer from the Indian Police service. Personnel of the Special Protection Group are drawn from Central Armed Police Forces & Railway Protection Force.

They are generally armed with FN F2000 Assault Rifles and Glock 17 Pistols (hidden in their suits) and are well connected with the rest of the security detail, through a myriad of communication devices. The CATs usually form the second cordon. They are tasked with providing 'suppressing and covering' firepower to allow enough time for the Protective Detail to get the PM to safety, in case of any eventuality. It is a defensive force which always follow the PM in his motorcade and are in position well before the PM arrives at his destination.
