The Second Spanish Republic (Spanish:Segunda República Española) was the republican regime that existed in Spain from 1931 to 1939, preceded by the Restoration and followed by Francoist Spain after the Spanish Civil War.
The Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed when KingAlfonso XIII left the country following municipal elections in which anti-monarchist candidates won the majority of votes, and the Spanish population celebrated the beginning of the Republic and social pressure made the political regime change. Its government went into exile on 1 April 1939, when the last of the Republican forces surrendered to the rebel nacionales, led in part by GeneralísimoFrancisco Franco, ending the Spanish Civil War.
In the same manner as the other two branches of the Spanish Republican Armed Forces, the Spanish Republican Navy went through two clear phases during its existence:
The pre-Civil War phase, before the coup of July 1936 that would fracture the Spanish military institution
The situation after the pro-fascist coup, when most of the fleet remained loyal to the republican government after the crews had overrun their officers and formed committees. Faced with the coup, many officers joined it and others hesitated; only about 5% of the top officers stood steadfastly for the Spanish Republic. The officer corps was later partially reinstated with the aim of improving coordination in the course of the Spanish Civil War.
First years of the Republic (1931-1936)
Spain had inherited a large Navy from colonial times. A sizeable Military Fleet had been deemed necessary when the Spanish crown ruled over such far-flung places as the Philippines and Cuba, but by the early 1930s young military officers saw the institution as too large, old-fashioned and ineffective. They balked at the costs and at the lack of results of the Spanish military during the Rif Wars in Morocco and their vision was to have a smaller and more modern Spanish Navy that would meet the needs of the country. Ramón Franco, who was in the Air Force at the time of the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic, said: "Our little colonies —referring to the small outposts in the Moroccan shores, the Western Sahara and Equatorial Guinea— don't need a strong navy made up of large and numerous units. The policing of our harbors, the implementing of fishery laws and the prevention of smuggling are nowadays the only missions that our Navy has to do."

How Spain (Narrowly) Became a Democracy
Somewhat surprisingly, Spain became a democracy only recently; up until the 1970s it remained a brutal dictatorship under the iron fist of Francisco Franco. So how did Spain get there and how did it finally save itself from autocracy?

Although Spain avoided the bloodbath of the Great War it was embroiled in conflicts of its own in the first half of the Twentieth Century. Spanish military officers pushed for a conquest strategy of North Africa to overcome the decline of the country. Expansion through the Rif region led to the Establishment of the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco and conflict with the local population. In 1911, for the first time in its history, Spain used armored vehicles during military operations. The Rifians revolted and inflicted a humiliating defeat on the Spanish forces at Annual in the summer of 1921.
Despite the eventual success in Africa the dictatorial regime did not last long. By 1930, the progressive and revolutionary opposition to the system began organizing. The municipal elections on April 14th 1931 saw victories for republican parties in most of the major cities leading to the proclamation of the Republic.

This episode of Ten Minute History (like a documentary, only shorter) covers Spain in the 1930s before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, through the civil war itself and to the end of Francisco Franco's dictatorship. It covers why the Nationalists won, what conditions led to the civil war and how Franco governed Spain. The end of the episode is focused on the (incredibly impressive) efforts of King Juan Carlos I of Spain to bring democracy back to Spain.
Ten Minute History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.
Recommended books:
Somewhat surprisingly, Spain became a democracy only recently; up until the 1970s it remained a brutal dictatorship under the iron fist of Francisco Franco. So how did Spain get there and how did it finally save itself from autocracy?

Given Franco's preferences during the Second World War (despite his official neutrality) along with his government's ideology, why didn't the allies get rid of him after world war 2? To find out watch this short and simple animated documentary.

Spanish troops march in parade in front of Royal palace. Pan along balcony showing members of the Spanish Royal family including King Alphonso XIII.
Library footage of Royalist parade some time before.
Parade and cheering as flag of the Spanish republic is raised. Unidentified man gives rousing speech from balcony. Crowd cheers below. Good shots of people celebrating the creation of the Republic.
Intertitle reads: "... so, barely escaping with his life - 'The Duke of Toledo' now - he lands in France ... debonair and smiling as ever."
The exiled King Alphonso walks quickly along corridor with supporters. He gets onto a railway train. He shakes hands with a few supporters. The train moves away from the crowded platform.
Intertitle reads: "... to be almost 'torn to pieces' on arrival in Paris to join Queen Ena and his family."
A way has to be forced by French police along the crowded platform to let Alphonso pass.
Extra shots of Republican celebrations in Madrid.

The Spanish Civil War saw both sides use a multitude of coloured flags - let's take a look at them.
*In the video I say that the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella was between the kingdoms of Castile and Leon - this is fake news, King Ferdinand was of Aragon and Queen Isabella was of Castile.*
