In July 2012, SLCC merged with the Acadiana Technical Colleges, thereby making SLCC a comprehensive community college with campuses in eight parishes. It is one of the largest community colleges in Louisiana with more than 7,000 students enrolled and is a leader in training Louisiana’s workforce. SLCC awards associate degrees, transfer degrees, technical diplomas and certifications. Students can choose from a variety of academic programs such as criminal justice, business technology, industrial technology and general studies. More than 30 technical programs are offered in areas including healthcare, business, nursing, welding, automotive repair, midwifery, and civil surveying.
South Louisiana Community College is the only college in the state to offer an associate degree in midwifery and technical diploma in nondestructive testing. SLCC recently received approval from the Louisiana Nursing Board and Louisiana Board of Regents to offer a Registered Nursing program. This program will be an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) and is scheduled to begin in Spring 2014 with 40 students.
This port is critical for grain shipments from the Midwest, handling some 60% of all raw grain exports.
Geography
The ports of New Orleans, South Louisiana, and Baton Rouge cover 172 miles (277km) on both banks of the Mississippi River. The Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet Canal (now closed by a rock dike built across the channel at Bayou La Loutre) extends 67 miles (108km) from New Orleans to the Gulf of Mexico, and the channel up the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Baton Rouge runs at a 48-foot (14.6 m) draft. Overall, the navigational depths range from 12 feet to 48 feet (3.6 - 14.6 m) along the river, channels, and side canals. After Hurricane Katrina, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric AdministrationOffice of Coast Survey used boats with sonar and scanners to assess underwater damage to the ports. Port authorities used these surveys to make decisions about when to open or close the ports.
The community college (Malay:Kolej Komuniti) system in Malaysia provides a wide range of Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) courses. Disciplines covered include accounting, architecture, construction, engineering, draughting, entrepreneurship, hospitality, personal services, multimedia, and visual arts.
Community colleges in Malaysia are administered by the Ministry of Education (MOE) via the Jabatan Pengajian Kolej Komuniti (English: Department of Community College Education).
Community college offering four type of programmes:
Sijil Kolej Komuniti (English: Community College Certificate)
Sijil Kemahiran Khas (masalah pembelajaran) (English: Special Skills Certificate (Learning Disabilities/ Difficulties))
Diploma secara Pembelajaran Berasaskan Kerja (English: Work Based Learning Diploma)
Pembelajaran Sepanjang Hayat (Kursus pendek) (English: Lifelong Learning (Short Courses))
Background
In 2000, the Government approved a proposal by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to establish a network of educational institutions whereby vocational and technical skills training could be provided at all levels for school leavers before they entered the workforce. The community colleges also provide an infrastructure for rural communities to gain skills training through short courses as well as providing access to a post-secondary education. This institutions became known as community colleges.
Like all Orange Line stations, Community College is fully wheelchair accessible.
Station layout
Location and connections
Community College station is one of the few stops on the Orange Line without at least one MBTA bus connection. The station was built without a busway, as much of the surrounding area has a relatively low demand for bus service. The area north and west of the station is covered by the MBTA Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility, an abandoned freight yard, and the Inner Belt industrial park, while the area south of the station is occupied by major highway ramps connecting the I-93 elevated highway with the Tobin Bridge and Route 1.
Much of the state's lands were formed from sediment washed down the Mississippi River, leaving enormous deltas and vast areas of coastal marsh and swamp. These contain a rich southern biota; typical examples include birds such as ibis and egrets. There are also many species of tree frogs, and fish such as sturgeon and paddlefish. In more elevated areas, fire is a natural process in the landscape, and has produced extensive areas of longleaf pine forest and wet savannas. These support an exceptionally large number of plant species, including many species of orchids and carnivorous plants.
On November 2, 1913, the Louisiana departed from Lorain, Ohio to deliver a load of coal to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After completing her stop in Milwaukee, the Louisiana made way for Escanaba, Michigan to pick up a load of iron ore. In the early morning hours of November 8, the ship passed through Porte des Morts. Upon reaching the strait, she was greeted by a severe snowstorm. The captain attempted to take refuge at Washington Island in Door County, Wisconsin, but the heavy seas and howling wind proved too strong for the ship's anchors to hold her in place, and she was run aground.
Despite the situation on board the Louisiana, the crew opted to remain aboard the vessel rather than taking the one small lifeboat they had out to the raging seas. However, a fire broke out in the cargo hold later in the morning and the crew members were left with no choice. A rescue ship had been deployed from Plum Island, but the breaking waves were too powerful for the ship to be able to reach the crew. In the end, the crew was able to make it to shore.
CenterPoint Energy Plaza (formerly Houston Industries Plaza) is a 741 feet (226m) tall building in downtown Houston. The original building, finished in 1974, stood at 651 feet (198m), but a 90-foot (27m) extension was added as part of a 1996 renovation. Designed by Richard Keating, this renovation dramatically changed the building, the Houston Skyline and the downtown. Keating was also the designer of the nearby Wells Fargo Tower. It has the headquarters of CenterPoint Energy.
Historically the building housed the headquarters of Houston Industries (HI) and subsidiary Houston Lighting & Power (HL&P). In 1999 Houston Industries changed its name to Reliant Energy. When Reliant Energy moved out of the building and moved into the new Reliant Energy Plaza in 2003, the company left over 400,000 square feet (37,000m2) of space vacant.
Around 1995 the building owners added a circle-shaped canopy that is five stories tall. Clifford Pugh of the Houston Chronicle wrote that "It was meant to resemble a lantern, but at night the lit open space looks more like a hovering spaceship."
Governed by a board of nine Commissioners, the Port of South Louisiana is the premier sea gateway for U.S. export and import traffic. The Port of South Louisiana, which stretches 54 miles along the Mississippi River, is the largest tonnage port district in the western hemisphere. See what we're all about!

The Port of South Louisiana is not only the #1 grain exporter in the United States, distributing over 50 percent of the nation’s grain, but also the highest ranked exporter in North America. The resident industry within the Port includes companies in the petrochemical, fertilizer, and logistics trades. The tri-parish region has attracted $23.262 billion in investments from these businesses, primarily due to location and the Port’s many competitive advantages.
Located within a 54-mile stretch of the lower Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, the Port serves as a strategic location for its resident industry. To date, 70 companies utilize the Port’s intermodal transportation network of roadways, rail, air, and waterways. The Port offers access to four Class I railroads and two airports: the Port of South Louisiana Executive Regional Airport (KAPS) within a 15-minute commute and Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY) only a 30-minute drive away in Kenner.
The Port of South Louisiana handles over $69 billion in trade annually that supports over 30 thousand direct jobs (6 out of 10 jobs) in the River Region, which translates to over 83 thousand jobs (1 out of 25) in the state of Louisiana. Regionally, the Port contributes $1.8 billion in income, $14.4 billion in revenue, and $72.5 million in state and local taxes. As stated in its mission, the Port continues to encourage foreign and domestic ventures to establish industry in the River Region and works assiduously to improve its infrastructure, thereby creating job opportunities for the citizens of the River Parishes.

Check out this video for an inside look at the Louisiana International Terminal and what it means to the state of Louisiana for the future of the shipping industry and our economy.
Close to 280-million tons of goods including more than half of America's grain exports depart the mouth of the Mississippi on ships and barges each year. That's about a ton for every man, woman and child in the U.S. The Heartland's harvests head for the world's dinner tables on the seaways of South Louisiana. Visit http://tinyurl.com/6fessw to watch the entire Episode 210.
The Port of South Louisiana, founded in 1960, has grown in size and strength to become the largest tonnage port in the Western Hemisphere as well as, according to a recent report by international shipping magazine Fairplay, the 16th ranked port in the world out of 5,000 ports. The Port of South Louisiana’s mission is to promote maritime commerce, trade, and development along with establishing industrial facilities resulting in job creation and a stronger tax base for the region.
As America's largest tonnage Port district, the Port of South Louisiana is the premier sea gateway for U.S. export and import traffic.
The region sits at the intersection of the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico, which allows for speedy and expeditious distribution of products throughout the Americas and to the world.
Port officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week to celebrate the new headquarters in Reserve.
