Korean cuisine has evolved through centuries of social and political change. Originating from ancient agricultural and nomadic traditions in the Korean peninsula and southern Manchuria, Korean cuisine has evolved through a complex interaction of the natural environment and different cultural trends.
Ingredients and dishes vary by province. Many regional dishes have become national, and dishes that were once regional have proliferated in different variations across the country. The Korean royal court cuisine once brought all of the unique regional specialties together for the royal family. Meals are regulated by Korean cultural etiquette.
The contemporary culture of South Korea developed from the traditional culture of Korea which was prevalent in the early Korean nomadic tribes. By maintaining thousands of years of ancient Korean with influence from ancient Chinese culture South Korea split on its own path of cultural development away from North Korean culture since the division of Korea in 1948. The industrialization and urbanization of South Korea, especially Seoul, have brought many changes to the way Korean people live. Changing economics and lifestyles have led to a concentration of population in major cities (and depopulation of the rural countryside), with multi-generational households separating into nuclear family living arrangements.
Literature
Prior to the 20th century, Korean literature was influenced by Classical Chinese literature. Chinese calligraphy was also extensively used by Koreans for over one thousand years in Korean literature. Modern literature is often linked with the development of hangul, which helped spread literacy from the dominant classes to the common people, including women. Hangul, however, only reached a dominant position in Korean literature in the second half of the 19th century, resulting in a major growth in Korean literature. Sinsoseol, for instance, are novels written in hangul.

Rice cake skewers can be found all over the streets of Seoul. I like to buy these from street vendors when I’m hungry but also in a hurry. It’s a great grab-and-go snack that fills you up and is so tasty! It’s also extremely cheap – one skewer usually costs less than a dollar.
The best thing about this snack is that it’s quick to prepare and uses staple Korean ingredients. I actually prefer to make tteok kochi at home because I can fully customize it to my taste!

How to Eat Korean Food (Without Embarrassing Yourself) | Serious Eats
The best part of learning about new cuisines is trying delicious dishes and ingredients that are entirely new to you. And an important element of any cuisine is the customs and etiquette that govern how meals are eaten. That’s not to say that we here at Serious Eats believe that there’s a right or wrong way to enjoy food of any type (you do you, knife-and-forkers!). As long as whatever you’re eating makes it to your mouth, you’re doing fine. But we do think there is a best way to enjoy specific dishes or meals.
To that end, we asked chef Seoyoung Jung—who’s already shown us how to stock a Korean pantry and has shared a bunch of wonderful Korean recipes on our site—to walk us through the customs and etiquette that govern a typical, home-style, Korean meal. The result is the instructive vid...

The result is the instructive video above.

Tensions are rising in South Korea, where an arrest warrant for the country's impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol is due to expire on Monday. Protestors both for and against the president have taken to the streets of the capital Seoul.

Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, is due to arrive in South Korea after authorities tried and failed to arrest the impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol.
After a dramatic six hour stand-off, police called off the attempt to arrest the suspended president - as Mr Yoon's security team formed a human wall and used vehicles to block the arresting team's path.
It has been an unprecedented month for South Korean politics. Yoon's shocking yet short-lived martial law order was followed by an impeachment vote against him.
Protests in the country's capital Seoul continue, with hundreds taking to the streets in support and also against the impeached president. Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1rbfUog
