Vote to impeach South Korea’s president fails after boycott by ruling party MPs | BBC News
All but three MPs of South Korea's ruling party left parliament ahead of a vote on whether to impeach embattled President Yoon Suk Yeol.
That meant the bill fell short of the 200 members required to pass it, with the opposition needing eight MPs from the ruling People Power Party (PPP) to back it.
Tens of thousands of people have gathered outside South Korea's National Assembly in Seoul calling for Yoon's removal.
Earlier on Saturday, Yoon apologised for declaring martial law on Tuesday - a move that was quickly overturned by lawmakers - and said he would not impose it again.

South Korea’s ruling party leader calls for suspension of president’s powers in dramatic reversal
The leader of South Korea’s ruling party said that President Yoon Suk Yeoul needs to be immediately suspended from duty to protect the country from “grave danger,” in a dramatic reversal of opinion that compounds the pressure building on Yoon ahead of a impeachment vote in parliament. The apparent U-turn by Han Dong-hoon, chief of Yoon’s own People Power Party, comes after he received “credible evidence” that Yoon had ordered the arrest of key politicians during the short-lived martial law imposed on Tuesday night, Han told reporters. #CNN #News

"당 대표가 국정 권한 행사못해 총리가 국정 챙겨" 내각, "정부 기능 정상 유지에 혼신의 노력"
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and ruling party leader Han Dong-hoon have pledged to stabilize state affairs and address pressing domestic and foreign challenges.
This includes calls for President Yoon to step down and stay away from governance.
Oh Soo-young starts us off.
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo pledged the government will keep calm and carry on handling domestic and foreign challenges, amid the political storm following President Yoon Suk Yeol's short-lived martial law order last week.
After a motion to impeach the President fell through in Parliament, the Prime Minister held a joint press conference with ruling party leader Han Dong-hoon on Sunday, in their aim to “ensure all state functions operate smoothly,” whilst making it clear that the nation's executive will not have a part in domestic or foreign policy.
"Above all else, it is crucial to ensure that there is no disruption in state affairs. We will do our utmost every moment to serve the people so that the safety of the nation and the daily lives of its citizens remain unshaken."
The diplomat-turned Prime Minister stressed the need to continue the country's foreign policy initiatives, in an ever-changing geopolitical environment.
Seeking cooperation with the incoming Donald Trump Administration remains a vital task for the country.
"Maintaining a robust ROK-U.S. alliance and strengthening security cooperation among South Korea, the United States, and Japan are critical and pressing tasks. Led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the whole Cabinet will work tirelessly to preserve trust with our allies, including the U.S., Japan, and other friendly nations."
On economic and social challenges facing the nation, Han vowed to focus on people's livelihoods, respond swiftly to financial and foreign exchange risks, as well as strengthen law and order and public safety.
He called on the National Assembly to cooperate in passing the government's budget bill.
Going forward, the PM and ruling party chief agreed to hold regular meetings.
The show of cooperation between the two officials indicates their push for President Yoon Suk Yeol to step down in an orderly way, rather than face impeachment which could disrupt the government's functions, and paralyze major policy initiatives.
The opposition Democratic Party of Korea heavily criticized the approach, deeming it “unconstitutional" and vowed weekly impeachment motions.
The South Korean Constitution allows the Prime Minister to act as interim leader only when the President is unable to fulfill duties due to death, resignation or impeachment.
As for President Yoon, the troubled leader has stayed mum after his apology to the public.
His weekly meeting with the Prime Minister on Monday was canceled, according to the PM's office, although he has accepted ministerial resignations and named new officials.
Yoon stated Saturday that he would leave state affairs to the ruling party and the government but has not commented on their push for his early resignation.

#CNN #News

England 1-2 Brazil | Korea/Japan 2002 | FIFA World Cup
England and Brazil played out a memorable quarter-final encounter at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Japan/Korea. Michael Owen gave the Three Lions the lead before goals either side of the break from Rivaldo and Ronaldinho secured victory for the Selecao.
The question remains: was Ronaldinho's free-kick against David Seaman a wonder goal or fluke?

England and Brazil played out a memorable quarter-final encounter at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Japan/Korea. Michael Owen gave the Three Lions the lead before goals either side of the break from Rivaldo and Ronaldinho secured victory for the Selecao.
The question remains: was Ronaldinho's free-kick against David Seaman a wonder goal or fluke?

The "Winning Eleven" game series, developed by "Konami," is considered one of the
most significant experiences in the history of video games. The game "Winning Eleven 2002" was released on the "PlayStation 1" (PS1) platform and left a clear mark in the world of football games. Designed for "PSX" consoles, it became part of the beloved "PS1 collection" among players. With "Winning Eleven 2002" offering an "HDMI" upgrade for "PSone" users, the visual experience for fans is enhanced. South Korean President Yoon sings 'American Pie' at Biden's US state dinner
South Korean president and known karaoke fan Yoon Suk Yeol delighted state dinner guests at the White House when he sang Don McLean’s American Pie, receiving a standing ovation.
American President Joe Biden invited Mr Yoon up onto the stage at the end of the dinner held in the South Korean leader’s honour at the end of a six-day state visit, in which they discussed “the end” of any North Korean regime that used nuclear weapons against the allies.
Striking a lighter note to proceedings, Mr Biden said to Mr Yoon in front of the crowd: “We know this is one of your favourite songs, American Pie”. Mr Yoon, 62, responded that he had loved the song since he was at school.
“We want to hear you sing it,” Mr Biden responded. “It’s been a while, but …” Mr Yoon said, taking the microphone.

Yoon Suk-yeol takes office as South Korea's new president - BBC News
Yoon Suk-yeol has been sworn in as the 13th president of South Korea.
Mr Yoon, a political novice, edged out a victory over the Democratic Party's Lee Jae-myung based on promises to tackle class inequality.
But the result was one of the closest in the country's history - with the final count separated by less than 1%.
He has pledged a tougher "reset" on relations with China and North Korea and intends to bolster the security alliance South Korea has with the United States.

Mr Yoon belted out the first few lines of the song to rapturous applause from the crowd and delighting the American president and first lady Jill Biden.
“The next state dinner we’re going to have, you’re looking at the entertainment,” Mr Biden told the crowd, and turning to Mr Yoon, said: “I had no damn idea you could sing.”
Though McLean, 77, could not attend the White House for the evening, he had sent a signed guitar, which Mr Biden presented to Mr Yoon.
Nearly 200 guests were at the dinner, including actor Angelina Jolie.
Yoon’s performance came after a day of talks between Biden and Yoon that covered issues including North Korea, semiconductor chips, trade, and the Ukraine war.
