The town was largely a small farming settlement until the industrial revolution and the sinking of collieries caused a boom in population and a need for modern housing for the workforce. This has left a town with a mixture of stone and brick buildings. The town and its neighbours were mentioned in the Domesday Book. Other industries such as quarrying for stone, agriculture and brick manufacture were also known at different periods of the towns history, with many of the former buildings and sites associated with them still existing.
Former quarry site
The former South Elmsall quarry was deemed a site of national importance, by Defra, due to the visible section of an unusually complete patch coral reef.
Coal mining
The town is most famous for its coal-mining past; it was the site of Frickley Colliery, which was one of the largest deep coal mines in the United Kingdom and a key source of union radicalism. During the UK Miners' Strike (1984-1985), there were numerous disturbances in the area. It was one of the last pits to return to work after the strike, seeing as it was picketed by a group of hardliners from Kent who continued to picket Frickley after the NUM had called off the strike. The Frickley miners refused to cross the hardliners' picket.
We’re looking forward to a day when the towns that are not so rich in England or the UK as a whole would be able to stand up in the comity of towns and proudly raise their heads. For now, it’s the turn of South Elmsall. If you’re contemplating a move to South Elmsall or are just interested in knowing what the area is like, we have a very good account in this video that will give you a nice glimpse. For the actual introduction to the town, please our video about towns in the UK that contains a deep analysis of the town. For now, we are discussing South Elmsall as one of the poorest towns in the UK.

Poorest Towns in England - South Kirkby
Why is South Kirkby so poor? South Kirkby appeared in one of our recent videos about the poorest towns in the UK. It’s in the 10th position on that list. But we have one challenge that we want to address now. We struggled to decide which of the facts about South Kirkby to keep out and which ones to add to the discussion. Interestingly, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to be analyzing the poor towns in England one after the other. Thus, we believe some of those facts left out in that video can be included in this one dedicated to South Kirby as one of the poorest towns in England. We don’t intend to make this video a run-down but an attention grabber.

For now, we are discussing South Elmsall as one of the poorest towns in the UK.
Where is South Elmsall?
If anyone needs to be reminded, South Elmsall is a town located in the county of West Yorkshire. It is 1.6 kilometers east of the town of South Kirkby. That is why both towns are oftentimes ranked together. It is also 5 kilometers miles south-east of Hemsworth, 6.4 kilometers north of Thurnscoe, 6.4 kilometers north of Goldthorpe, and 13 kilometers miles northwest of the major town of Doncaster.
Situated just north of the South Yorkshire border, the town was historically in the county of Yorkshire. However, it lies within the metropolitan district council of Wakefield. South Elmsall is in the WF9 2YN postcode district with Pontefract as the post town.
South Elmsall Really in the Past
About two centuries ago, no one would think of Elmsall as a poor town. As a former quarry site, it was deemed a site of national importance because of its quarry and coral reef. It used to be known for its coal mining. The famous Frickley Colliery, one of the largest deep coal mines in the UK found a home in the town. Going into the history of the town, you’d see that it was once on a steady rise to greatness. It used to be mainly a small farming settlement that was self-reliant before the Industrial Revolution. Collieries caused a boom in population and this, in turn, created the need for modern housing for the workforce and their households.
The contributions of the famous Frickley Colliery are enough to take the town beyond the grip of poverty. That colliery brought a lot of improvements to the area. Many clubs and organizations still have the name of the colliery as part of their names. Examples of these are Frickley Colliery Brass Band, Frickley Athletic which is a famous football team, and a cricket club named “Frickley.” Nevertheless, the reality that stares us in the face is that South Elmsall today is one of the poorest towns in the United Kingdom in spite of all it has to make it great.

You are sure to hear and see something so good about this town in this video. By the time you have heard about the history of the town, its prominent people, and population, you will be able to make your own opinion about the town.
An Overview of South Elmsall
South Elmsall is a small town and civil parish in the City of Wakefield which is in West Yorkshire in England. The town lying to the east of Hemsworth is a former coalfield area. Thus, it is underlain by coal measures consisting mainly of mudstone with beds of sandstones and seams of coal. It is these sandstones that prevent erosion. They could be seen forming a recurring pattern of escarpments standing out from the shallow mudstone floors of the valleys. It has major rivers that are crossing the area; these have carved broad valleys glaciated and floored by fertile alluvial deposits.
History of South Elmsall
South Elmsall is referred to in the Domesday Book of over 1000 years ago. That’s the first and the earliest historical reference to the town. It’s called Ermeshale, meaning that the village was under Norman domination before the name was later corrupted to Elmsall as we call it today. Geologists discovered Field Lane on Stromatolite Reef traceable back to the Permian period.
John Morris, a then-local Hero in South Elmsall was born in 1619. At an early age, he progressed and rose through the ranks braving different skirmishes to become a Colonel in the Civil War. He’s credited with taking Pontefract Castle from the Parliamentarians back then in 1648. At this time, the town was mainly a small farming village with stone cottages nestling in a valley.
This continued until the early 1800s when the lime quarrying industry gave way to coal as the main source of income and employment attracting workers from different areas. This influx made it necessary to have more houses to house the growing population and schools to educate young people. The town was filled with a mixture of stone and brick architectural designs. Around the year 1800, South Elmsall had become the main village around the area.
Coal Mining in South Elmsall
The history of South Elmsall would be vague if coal mining didn’t get enough attention. It was home to one of the largest deep coal mines in the United Kingdom, Frickley Colliery. It provided an important opportunity for union radicalism which got to a peak during the United Kingdom Miners’ Strike. That industrial crisis brought about serious disturbances in the area. Even when the strike was called off by force, the colliery was the last to return to work. A group of hardliners from the Kent picketed Frickley even after the strike had been called off.
Frickley Colliery invested in a lot of projects that brought improvements and many benefits to the area. One such was the establishment of the Warde Aldam Hospital. It also constructed swimming baths and sports facilities in the area. The Warde-Aldam was built in 1911 and was used as a general hospital. In 1948, it was taken over by the NHS and was providing acute hospital care until 1978. Following the closure of nearby pits like Ferrymoor-Riddings in 1985, Kinsley in 1986, South Kirkby in 1988, and Grimethorpe in 1992, Frickley Colliery also was closed on November 26, 1993, for the same reason others closed.

South Kirkby in Perspective
South Kirkby is a town in the City of Wakefield in West Yorkshire This town is governed locally by the administration of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council. South Kirby forms half of its civil parish. It’s often considered alongside Elmsall when ranked regarding factors indicating or contributing to poverty. Note, therefore, that most of what will be said about South Kirkby applies also to Elmsall.
The towns whose motto is “Friendship, Unity & Progress” appears to have forgotten or to be giving less attention to the third word, ‘progress’ in its motto. And if at all it’s making progress, it’s only toward poverty. You’re likely going to see rejections and denials of the facts we’re about to unfold about this town. We expect that the town council and individual stakeholders there may be inclined to defend their town and action in governing the town; we understand.
Why We Focus on Kirkby
Sincerely, we came across Kirkby when we realized that it’s more prominent than its size on the crime data record for the UK. We were tempted to add it to the list of the most dangerous or crime-ridden towns. But that’s a discussion for another day. Yet, we love to tell you what has been discovered by various bodies researching crime rates in South Kirkby and Moorthorpe.
The average crime rate for 2021 in the town was 119 crimes per 1,000 people. When this is placed side-by-side with West Yorkshire’s overall crime rate, it fares so poorly, even though the overage of that county is bad at 113 crimes per 1000 residents. Yet, the rate in Kirkby and Moorthorpe is 5 percent higher. The same source indicates that for the whole of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, South Kirkby and Moorthorpe is the 51st most dangerous small town. And when placed in the context of all the cities, towns, and villages, it is the 372nd most dangerous.
Take the month of September 2021, for instance, for shoplifting. South Kirkby and Moorthorpe had the highest rate among small towns in West Yorkshire, with 32 crimes reported. And the rate was 2.8 shopliftings per 1,000 inhabitants. Another rampant crime was bicycle theft in this town, as little as it is. The rate of this was more conspicuous in August 2021 when it was named the most dangerous small town in West Yorkshire for bicycle theft. It recorded 2 incidents giving a rate of 0.17 thefts per 1,000 residents.
But more worrisome is possession of arms in South Kirkby and Moorthorpe. In November 2021, it received 3 reports of possession of weapons. This makes it the most dangerous small town that possesses weapons in West Yorkshire that month.
Still on crime; the most common crimes, however, in South Kirkby and Moorthorpe up till now are violence and sexual offenses. The small town reported 585 offenses in 2021. Given that rate, 50 of such offenses were committed in 1,000 residents.

It may surprise you to know that the land this one occupies was once coastal, but the town is most famous for its coal-mining past. It was the site of Frickley Colliery, which was one of the largest deep coal mines in the United Kingdom. A busy market town these days, it has easy access to both Doncaster and Wakefield.
The Warde-Aldams were an important local family that owned many properties both in and around this part of West Yorkshire. We’ve met the name before – they owned Hooton Pagnell Hall and Frickley Hall, both of which we met in the Doncaster series.

What would you like to know about South Elmsall, a town in England? If you’re a subscriber to our Channel, you are likely to have seen or heard one or two things about South Elmsall. That is the next in our discussion of the towns in England. Are you thinking about moving to this village or do you intend moving to a not-so-big town? Please watch this video to the end and see if you could add South Elmsall to the list of towns in England you could consider.
