The South Downs are a range of chalk hills that extends for about 260 square miles (670km2) across the south-eastern coastal counties of England from the Itchen Valley of Hampshire in the west to Beachy Head, near Eastbourne, East Sussex, in the east. It is bounded on its northern side by a steep escarpment, from whose crest there are extensive views northwards across the Weald. The South Downs National Park forms a much larger area than the chalk range of the South Downs and includes large parts of the Weald.
The South Downs are characterised by rolling chalk downland with close-cropped turf and dry valleys, and are recognised as one of the most important chalk landscapes in England. The range is one of the four main areas of chalkdownland in southern England.
The South Downs are relatively unpopulated compared to South East England as a whole, although in Sussex there has been large-scale urban encroachment onto the chalk downland by major seaside resorts, including most notably Brighton and Hove.
South Downs is a 2011 play by the British playwright and author David Hare. It is set in 1962 in a public school, similar to Hare's own school, Lancing, in the South Downs. It is a response to Terence Rattigan's The Browning Version and was commissioned by Rattigan's estate to mark Rattigan's Centenary.
It premiered alongside a revival of Rattigan's The Browning Version from 2 September to 8 October 2011 at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester (the small auditorium of the Chichester Festival Theatre). The two plays were directed separately by Jeremy Herrin (South Downs) and Angus Jackson (The Browning Version).
The plays re-opened after a sell-out run at Chichester, at the Harold Pinter Theatre, London, on 24 April 2012 for three-months.
A radio version was produced for BBC Radio 4, broadcast on 1 September 2012. It was also directed by Jeremy Herrin, produced by Catherine Bailey, and performed by the original cast members.
People have been using the paths and tracks that have been linked to form the South Downs Way for approximately 8000 years. They were a safer and dryer alternative to those in the wetter lowlands throughout the mesolithic era. Early occupation in the area began 2000 years after that in the neolithic era. Early inhabitants built tumuli in places on the hills and hill forts later, once tribal fighting became more common. Old Winchester Hill is an example of one of these hill forts along the path. The trail was probably used by the Romans, despite the fact that they built one of their roads across the path at Stane Street (Chichester), this use possibly evidenced by the existence of Bignor Roman Villa near Bury, nearby the path.
I’ve recently just got back from an amazing microgap adventure in the South Downs and I’ve fallen in love with England all over again.
My trip to the South Downs National Park was unlike any other I’ve done before. Even though I wanted to discover some of the best things to do in the South Downs, there was a huge learning element to this trip.
Like any kid growing up watching Star Wars, I’ve always been fascinated about space and the final frontier. That’s why this trip was all about learning about space and the stars.
The South Downs National Park is one of the best places in the world to go stargazing - I’ve never seen night skies like I have here.
Obviously you can only go stargazing at night (duh), so here are some of my favourite things to do in the South Downs.

ROAM Free: The South Downs Way
Last summer 4 friends took on the South Downs Way - an ancient 100-mile ridgeline that spans the southeast coast of England. Starting in Winchester and finishing in East Bourne the historic chalk path has over 3500m of climbing and not a car in sight, just rolling steep hills as far as the eye can see.
The South Downs was the training ground of UK cycling legend Sean Yates, the third UK rider to wear the Yellow Jersey. Now his son Liam Yates carries on the tradition, joined by mates Neil Philips, Sophie Edmondson, and Anna Mcleod.
In these strange times of isolation, this short film is a reminder to all of the simple joys of cycling with friends. A joy that for the time being must remain a memory. Please do not travel to the South Downs during this period of lockdown, it is a bea...

Please do not travel to the South Downs during this period of lockdown, it is a beautiful ancient land and it isn't going anywhere.

You can find out all about my microgap experience here - http://bit.ly/3cbtVjg

Please do not travel to the South Downs during this period of lockdown, it is a beautiful ancient land and it isn't going anywhere.
