About, Tony Joe WhiteHe was the youngest of seven children who grew up working on a cotton farm. His family would sit around the campfire and play songs at night, a tradition that stayed with Tony Joe throughout his entire life. He first began performing music at school dances, and after graduating from high school he began performing at clubs in Kingsville and Corpus Christi, Texas. While cutting his teeth on the club circuit, he met his wife Leann, who encouraged him to write his own songs and that’s when everything changed. In 1967, White traveled to Nashville with nothing but a guitar and a suitcase. As luck would have it, he was able to get in the door of Bob Beckham’s office, a powerful music publisher who owned Combine Music, and he was instantly captivated by White’s look, sound and charisma. The music industry at that time had never seen someone who could cross over so many musical genres.
Things took off in 1969, when ‘Polk Salad Annie’ started climbing the charts and reached 8. On the heels of the release of his first album, ‘Black & White’, White began touring with Sly & the Family Stone, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steppenwolf and played many huge festivals around the world including the Isle of Wight and the Texas International Pop Festival. Usually accompanied by just a drummer, White established himself as an enigmatic performer and guitar player. His career as being an A-list songwriter also took shape during this era as Brook Benton’s version of White’s song ‘Rainy Night in Georgia’ his 2 on the charts and Dusty Springfield had a hit with his song ‘Willie and Laura Mae Jones’.
White died suddenly of a heart attack on October 24th, 2018. He was a man who was revered as an original by everyone in the music industry. A true legend who treated music with respect and always followed his heart. MORE ➥http://www.tonyjoewhite.com/
Lyrics: Ain't Going Down This Time
I've been laying low
Living in the shadows
Spending time alone
Conversations with the wall
Hanging on
I'm just trying to matter
And I remain
Trying to make some sense of it all
I've been here before I'm familiar with the pain
But I ain't running no more there's one thing changed
Ain't going down this time
This time I ain't going down
Like an undertow
I feel the promise of the nighttime
But I've been down that road
And my search came to an end
I hit the motherload
Enough blues for a lifetime
Now I'm digging deep inside
Trying to find my way back again
You know you've entered the danger zone
When you look in the eyes and there's no one home
Ain't going down this time
This time I ain't going down
Deep in the night
I miss a woman's touch
The fire burns strong
And I'm drawn to the flame
But I pay the price
When I get caught up in the heartbeat
And passion flows
Unrestrained
No one left to blame I'm faced with the truth
And it's all too plain when there's nothing left to lose
Ain't going down this time
This time I ain't goin

TONY JOE WHITE
EYES
Released three years after his last album for Warner Brothers, the cover on 1976's "Eyes" gave you a clue that this was going to be a challenging 'transitional' album for Tony Joe White. Silk shirt opened to his navel, gold chain, coiffed hair, yearning look, wine glasses, attractive young woman ... never good signs. The man's voice certainly remained instantly recognizable, but forced to sing in a restrained mode and surrounded by pseudo-discofied material like 'You Taught Me How To Love' and 'We'll Live On Lone' you almost had to laugh at the results. Exemplified by tracks like 'Soulful Eyes' and 'That Loving Feeling' the thought of turning White into a soulful Barry White, love ballad kinda' guy, complete with cooing female backing singers ('yeah', deep breath, 'yeah') and supper club sax solos was horribly wrong ... bad, badder, baddest. You certainly couldn't blame the guy for trying to make a living and for realizing that popular tastes had changed, but this sure wasn't the way to adapt to those changes. So was there anything worth hearing on this one? Yes, there were a couple of tracks where White at least partial reverted to his trademarked sound. It was plagued by the dreadful background singers, but otherwise 'Rainy Day Lover' was a nice swamp rock number. While I'm not normally a big blues fan, against the rest of this LP 'Texas Woman' sounded great. Even better were 'Swamp Boogie' and the slithery 'Hold On To Your Hiney' which I'd erroneously always thought was a Delbert McClinton number. Unfortunately those isolated tracks weren't enough to rescue that album, longtime fans apparently wanting nothing to do with this one. Still, this was weird enough to be worth checking out.
Curiously the label tapped the album for a single 'Hold On To Your Hiney' b/w 'Texas Woman' (20th Century Fox catalog number 1209-2322), but it only seems to have been released in Canada and Europe.
"Eyes" track listing:
(side 1)
1.) Soulful Eyes (Tony Joe White) - 3:42
2.) You Taught Me How To Love (Tony Joe White) - 3:10
3.) You Are Loved By Me (Tony Joe White) - 3:34
4.) Rainy Day Lover (Tony Joe White) - 3:25
5.) We'll Live On Love (Tony Joe White) - 3:27
(side 2)
1.) Making Love Is Good for You (Tony Joe White) - 3:12
2.) Texas Woman (Tony Joe White) - 2:54
3.) Hold On To Your Hiney (Tony Joe White) - 3:33
