Silicon on insulator (SOI) technology refers to the use of a layered silicon–insulator–silicon substrate in place of conventional silicon substrates in semiconductor manufacturing, especially microelectronics, to reduce parasitic device capacitance, thereby improving performance. SOI-based devices differ from conventional silicon-built devices in that the silicon junction is above an electrical insulator, typically silicon dioxide or sapphire (these types of devices are called silicon on sapphire, or SOS). The choice of insulator depends largely on intended application, with sapphire being used for high-performance radio frequency (RF) and radiation-sensitive applications, and silicon dioxide for diminished short channel effects in microelectronics devices. The insulating layer and topmost silicon layer also vary widely with application.
Industry need
The implementation of SOI technology is one of several manufacturing strategies employed to allow the continued miniaturization of microelectronic devices, colloquially referred to as extending Moore's Law. Reported benefits of SOI technology relative to conventional silicon (bulk CMOS) processing include:

Industry Data Analytics Latest Published Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) Market Research Report - Growth, Trends And Forecast (2021 - 2026) By Types, By Application, By Regions and By Key Players: Soitec SA, Shin-Etsu Chemical, SunEdison, and Others.
SOI is a semiconductor fabrication technique which is developed by IBM and uses pure silicon oxide and crystal silicon for microchips and integrated circuits. The processing speed of an SOI microchip is usually 30% faster than contemporary metal-oxide semiconductor-based chips where the power consumption is reduced by 80% making them an ideal choice for mobile devices. An SOI chip also reduces the soft-error rate which is data-corruption caused by natural radioactive background signals and cosmic rays.

Since the first creation of a dedicated SOI unit in 1991, CEA-Leti teams have addressed all the key issues regarding semiconductor technologies on SOI, from technology modules to device understanding up to the full platform implementation. More than 20 years research on SOI has provided Leti with a portfolio of a hundred patents, with hundreds of publications, and close industrial cooperation with high tech companies.
Together with SOITEC, ST Microelectronics and different key partners, CEA-Leti succeeded in leveraging a long term R&D program to develop FDSOI (Fully Depleted Silicon On Insulator) CMOS Technology, and aims at combining the intrinsic benefits of SOI with planar semiconductor architecture while using proven, well-understood design and manufacturing techniques. After a decade of research and several relevant demonstrations, FDSOI is now ready for mass production through the existence of a complete industrial supply chain.
If you are interested in the FDSOI performance and wish to know more about adapting the technology to your applications, LetiI definitely is your first choice partner.

In silicon on insulator technology, the substrate of the wafer is an insulator such as glass. This allows transistors to be completely isolated from each other, effectively ending latchup. SoI transistors also have very narrow bodies that fight leakage by reducing capacitive coupling from the drain to the channel. However, SoI imposes significant challenges in fabrication and operation.
