A shootout is a gun battle between armed groups. A shootout often, but not necessarily, pits law enforcement against criminal elements; it could also involve two groups outside of law enforcement, such as rival gangs. A shootout in a war-like context (i.e. regularly constituted armed forces or even guerrilla or insurgent forces) would usually be considered a battle (depending on size), rather than a shootout. Shootouts are often portrayed in action films and western films.
Famous shootouts in the United States and territories
The Greatest Shootout in the West
On December 19, 1854, while trekking on a miner's trail in along the North Fork of the American River, Dr. Bolivar Sparks, James McDonald and Captain Jonathan Davis were bushwhacked by an international band of bandits. The bandits, a Frenchman, two Americans, two Englishmen, four Mexicans and four Australians, had recently robbed and killed four American miners on December 18, 1854, and six Chinese miners on December 17, 1854. McDonald was killed instantly, and Dr. Sparks was fatally wounded, however Captain Davis, an Army veteran, pulled out both of his pistols and killed seven of the bandits in quick order. Out of bullets, Captain Davis, an expert fencer, pulled out his Bowie knife and killed four more of his attackers. The surviving bandits fled for their lives. The shootout was witnessed by a group of miners, who buried the bodies of the dead.

Format and rules
It was a one frame shoot out with a random draw. 64 players contested the tournament, which was shown on Sky, the first time that Sky has shown a World Snooker event live since 2004. Frames were subject to a 20 second shot clock in the first five minutes and to a 15 second shot clock in the last 5 minutes. Clock started when the player had taken the cue ball. Players had to hit a cushion or pot a ball on every shot. Players lagged for who breaks and the winner decided. All foul resulted in ball in hand. After 10 minutes, the player with the most points won. If the score was tied, then a blue ball shoot out decided.
Shoot Out is a 1971 western film directed by Henry Hathaway. It stars Gregory Peck and Patricia Quinn. The film is adapted from Will James's 1930 novel, The Lone Cowboy. The film was produced, directed, and written by the team that delivered the Oscar-winning film True Grit.
This was the second-to-last of the 65 films directed by Hathaway.
Plot
Clay Lomax gets out of prison after serving nearly eight years. He goes looking for Sam Foley, a bank robber who shot Lomax in the back and left him to take the rap.
Learning of his release, Foley hires a trio of young gun-thugs - Pepe, Skeeter, and Bobby Jay Jones - to follow him and let him know when Lomax is close to reaching him. Foley orders them not to shoot or kill him. Lomax locates an old friend, Trooper, and offers him all the money he has in the world, $200, for the name of the town where Foley is staying. The trio of gun-thugs catch up to Lomax at Trooper's saloon and force Alma, one of Trooper's whores, to spend the night with all three of them while they monitor Lomax.
