The Blackpool Tower is a tourist attraction in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, which was opened to the public on 14 May 1894. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it is 158 metres (518 feet) tall and is the 103rd tallest freestanding tower in the world. The tower is a Grade I listed building.
Construction
The Blackpool Tower Company was founded by London-based Standard Contract & Debenture Corporation in 1890, when it bought an Aquarium on Central Promenade with the intention of building a replica Eiffel Tower on the site. John Bickerstaffe, a former Mayor of Blackpool, was asked to become Chairman of the new company and its shares went on sale in July 1891.
The Standard Corporation kept 30,000 £1 shares for itself and offered £150,000 worth of shares to the public, although initially only two-thirds of these shares were taken up. This lack of interest forced the Tower Company to ask for further cash contributions from its existing shareholders, but the poor financial situation of the Standard Corporation, worsened by the falling share price, rendered it unable to pay.
Bickerstaffe’s remedy for the potential collapse of the venture was to buy any shares available, until his original holding of £500 amounted to £20,000. He also released the Standard Corporation from their share commitments. When the Tower opened in 1894 its success justified the overall investment of nearly £300,000, and the Company made a £30,000 profit in 1896.
Blackpooli/ˈblækpuːl/ is a seaside resort in Lancashire, England, on England's northwest coast. The town is on the Irish Sea, between the Ribble and Wyre estuaries, 17.5 miles (28.2km) northwest of Preston, 27 miles (43km) north of Liverpool, 30 miles (48km) northwest of Bolton and 40 miles (64km) northwest of Manchester. It had an estimated population of 142,065 at the 2011 Census.
Throughout the Middle Ages and Early Modern period, Blackpool was a coastal hamlet in Lancashire's Hundred of Amounderness, and remained such until the mid-18th century when it became fashionable in England to travel to the coast in the summer to bathe in sea water to improve well-being. In 1781, visitors attracted to Blackpool's 7-mile (11km) sandy beach were able to use a new private road, built by Thomas Clifton and Sir Henry Hoghton. Stagecoaches began running to Blackpool from Manchester in the same year, and from Halifax in 1782. In the early 19th century, Henry Banks and his son-in-law John Cocker erected new buildings in Blackpool such that its population grew from less than 500 in 1801 to over 2,500 in 1851. St John's Church in Blackpool was consecrated in 1821.
General Election 1939/40:
Another General Election was required to take place before the end of 1940. The political parties had been making preparations for an election to take place from 1939 and by the end of this year, the following candidates had been selected; *Conservative: Roland Robinson
Blackpool is a British television musicalcomedy drama serial, produced in-house by the BBC. It was screened on BBC One as six one-hour episodes on Thursday nights at 9pm from 11 November to 16 December 2004. When retransmitted by BBC America in 2005, it was renamed Viva Blackpool, and went on to win a Peabody Award for BBC Worldwide, the commercial overseas distribution subsidiary of the BBC. A sequel in the form of a TV movie was produced by the BBC, also called Viva Blackpool in the UK (2006).
Plot
The plot concerns the murder of a young man in a Blackpool arcade, and how it affects the people involved in the arcade and the investigation:
Ripley Holden (David Morrissey), the ambitious, arrogant arcade owner who believes strongly in luck, and who is planning to turn his arcade into a Las Vegas-style casino hotel and thus revive Blackpool's fortunes;
DI Peter Carlisle (David Tennant), the investigating officer of the murder: a charming and good-natured, although extremely manipulative, police officer, who dislikes Holden almost on sight;

Visiting Blackpool is unique in its own way. It’s just like visiting any other town or city; tourists usually trip during their trip to a place they have not quite studied well. Even after making all the possible findings about their destinations, many tourists may still encounter unwelcome surprises, making a mockery of all their plans and research. These are a result of slight mistakes that could taint their holiday. In this video, however, we’re not talking about slight mistakes. We’re focusing on significant mistakes that can be very consequential. Regardless of the gravity of those mistakes, however, a little more vigilance can make a lot of difference. We will now discuss 12 serious mistakes people make when visiting Blackpool.
12. Visiting during off-season
It’s always a very serious mistake to visit this time during the off-season when some of its areas appear as if on lockdown. July and August can be good months to visit if you want to enjoy some fun on the beach and paddle in the sea. This is when the temperatures are their highest. You can sunbathe and stay out till evening. June also can be a great month to visit if you don’t mind the slightly cooler weather. But make sure you go only on weekends as weekdays can be boring during this month. September too isn’t bad. Visiting the town outside these months is, oh dear!
11. Expecting too much of transport services
Tourists from London and other sophisticated cities usually believe that trams, trains, buses, and taxis in Blackpool function similarly to other tourist areas. They're in for a big shock when they find, for example, that there is no Uber in Blackpool. Another rude example is that tramps in the town don't accept contactless payments. When tourists don’t come with enough cash, they might find themselves unable to move as much as they wish. However, most of the town's tourist centers are within trekking distance of each other. If you don't have enough cash, you could do with a bit more trekking.
10. Not understanding money matters
While credit cards, debit cards, and other contactless payments are allowed in many places, you’re advised to bring along extra cash while visiting Blackpool. Paying for little things, such as ice cream on the Promenade and some games on the pier may not be as easy as using these methods. More so, contactless payment has limits here. Even some tourists who use ATMs during their stay are pleasantly surprised that the only good way is to be charged in GBP. If you choose to be charged in your local currency, you will pay more because it's the ATM provider that will set the exchange rate, which will be higher.
9. Not planning for pickpockets
Tourist destinations usually attract unscrupulous elements. We have no reason to expect Blackpool to be an exception. This town’s crime rate is a bit higher. Pickpockets are always at their best in Blackpool during the season. It’s illusory to depend on the large police presence for protection. These security agents can’t be everywhere at once. They’re not able to monitor every square inch and every single person in a big crowd. Your wallets might be snatched. You have to keep your belonging safe. Don’t put your wallet in your back pocket. Dress in such a way that will enable you fasten your belonging tightly close to your body.
8. Not bringing a waterproof jacket
Many tourists often make the mistake of thinking that they’ll not need a waterproof jacket since they’re visiting the town in summer, which can be hot. They often forget that Blackpool is in Lancashire and what we know about this place is that Lancashire Coast is the wettest in England. It regularly gets a thorough soaking and wetness from rain blown in off the Irish Sea. Though most days will be sunny, bright, and clear, having a lightweight waterproof coat is a precaution that’ll do you much good in case the weather behaves unexpectedly. If you don’t have such a jacket, you may plan for only indoor entertainment.

In the next few months as the impending General Election dominates our politics, The Northern Agenda podcast is going on the road.
Across the North of England voters will be going to the polls five years on from the dramatic 2019 election where large swathes of our region broke the habit of decades by switching their allegiance from Labour to the Tories, putting Boris Johnson into Downing Street in the process.
If the polls are anything to go by, those so-called 'red wall' seats are now set to go back to Labour - plus a few more besides.
But polling can only tell us so much about what’s happened in the North in the last 5 years.
We want to hear from these Northern communities directly so between now and the election The Northern Agenda will be going to key seats around the North, we might even venture into the Midlands, to find out what’s making them tick.
First stop for Northern Agenda Editor Rob Parsons is the seaside resort of Blackpool, where there will soon be an early electoral test for Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak.
In just a few weeks there’s going to be a by-election in the Blackpool South constituency after its MP, Conservative Scott Benton, was caught by The Times newspaper offering to lobby ministers and table parliamentary questions on behalf of gambling investors.
But there’s more reason to care about Blackpool than just political intrigue - it tells us a fascinating story about the decline of coastal towns and the challenges facing the so-called ‘levelling up’ agenda. So have a look as The Northern Agenda takes the temperature at the country’s most popular seaside resort.

Next month, voters will head to the polls in the local elections and Rishi Sunak will face another by-election test in the marginal constituency of Blackpool South.

Watch as members of the public in Lee Anderson’s constituency of Ashfield react to his defection to Reform UK on Monday 11 March.
The MP was suspended by the Conservative Party recently after refusing to apologise for claims Islamists had “control” of London mayor Sadiq Khan.
He announced his switch to the Nigel Farage-linked right-wing populist party at a press conference alongside party leader Richard Tice.
“I will start by saying I want my country back,” Mr Anderson said.
He added that he is prepared to gamble on himself and that his mailbag is full of people in the UK who support his new party.
