The Shikoku(四国犬,Shikoku-ken, alternative names: Kochi-ken, Mikawa Inu, Japanese Wolfdog) is a native, primitive Japanesebreed of dog from Shikoku island that is similar to a Shiba Inu. The Shikoku was recently added as recognized breed of the American Kennel Club as an AKC FSS standard [ Foundation Stock Service ], it is recognized by the Japan Kennel Club, an organization recognized by AKC as an official foreign registry (AKC recognizes the Shiba Inu, however). The Shikoku is also in the Canadian Kennel Club Hound group and the United Kennel Club, awaiting full recognition. In 1937 the Japanese Crown recognized the Shikoku dog as a living "natural monument" of Japan.
Comparison to other Japanese breeds
The Shikoku is one of the native Japanese breeds intermediate in size between the large Akita Inu and the small Shiba Inu; all are within the Spitz family of dogs. The Shikoku was bred mainly for hunting deer and boar in the mountainous districts of Kochi Prefecture. It is sometimes called "Kochi-ken" and, along with the Kai dog, referred to as a deerhound.
Shikoku(四国, "four provinces") is the smallest (225km or 139.8mi long and between 50 and 150km or 31.1 and 93.2mi wide) and least populous (4,141,955 as of 2005) of the four main islands of Japan, located south of Honshu and east of the island of Kyushu. Its ancient names include Iyo-no-futana-shima (伊予之二名島), Iyo-shima (伊予島), and Futana-shima (二名島). The current name refers to the four former provinces that made up the island: Awa, Tosa, Sanuki, and Iyo.
Years after moving to Tokyo with her parents, Hinako returns to her hometown in rural Shikoku. She soon learns that her childhood friend, Sayori, died several years ago and that Sayori's mother, who used to perform seances and exorcisms, has gone almost insane with grief. After seeing Sayori's yūrei several times during the night, Hinako consults with some local experts on the paranormal and discovers that Sayori's mother has something planned for her daughter.
The Japanese Wolf was irradiated and most believe is extinct, but perhaps it's left a legacy with one of the most primitive Japanese dog breeds who developed on the island where the wolf remained the longest before being annihilated. Many believe the Shikoku is the most primitive all of the Japanese breeds and has wolf like characteristics through his extremely primitive DNA. Did he descend from the Japanese wolf and how long ago was that? Does this make him a wolfdog? Find out today...

Shikoku / 99+1 Dog Breeds
The Shikoku. He’s a dog that has an affinity with the natural world, he has highly tuned survival skills that may be redundant as a pet, but are still visible. Loving affection, he likes to give love as much as receive it, though his natural caution can hinder him at times.
He’ll be loyal to you, he’ll happily await your command, but strangers may see another side to him if he isn’t given the chance to get used to social interactions from a young age. With kids, he’ll show them respect and love if they do the same, a good upbringing for both is a must to make this work.

KBD vs. Shikoku (yes it's just play)
Shikoku's are not known for backing down. Koya is trying to encourage play, but Joki is wanting to "defend" mom and keep the attention on herself. This kind of encounter looks vicious, but we consider this to be healthy with these breeds. There is a line and it's close to being crossed, but there is a lot of great communication happening too. I love how vocal shikoku's are.

An intelligent dog like this is a fast learner, and he’ll be a pleasure to train for a competent owner. He’ll need consistency and needs to understand that you’re the boss, otherwise he’ll get lazy, mischievous and may get snappy.
This guy needs his exercise, and plenty of it. A daily walk is good, a daily jog or run even better. But be sure to keep him safe, as he may just get himself in a pickle if he goes after prey in an urban environment. He doesn’t have a doggy smell, so bath him every six weeks or so, give him a brush once a week to remove dead hair.
Interesting facts: The Shikoku is an official national treasure of Japan, declared so in 1937 and reflecting the rarity of the breed. These dogs are amongst the purest breeds in the world, down to the isolated region from which they originate!
The Shikoku. Respect begets respect, the right owner will reap great rewards from this dog.

The Shikoku is descended from the medium-sized dogs that existed in ancient Japan. He was
raised as a hunting dog, primarily for hunting boar in Kochi Prefecture's hilly parts. These dogs,
between the smaller Shiba Inu and the bigger Akita Inu in size, were initially employed for
hunting boar in the hilly districts of Kochi Prefecture. Kochi-ken is another name for him.

This is just an introductory video showcasing our puppy Sekoya (Koya for short), and his journey with us from an 8 week old pupper to a 4 month old doggo.
These two don't traditionally play super well but this was a fantastic interaction. Whenever it's cool and windy out, they seem to both start feeling their oats.

The owner has a total of seven Shikoku dogs, which are known as a breed of hunting dog, but only three have been registered with the city and there were no records of any having been vaccinated for rabies for nearly 10 years.
“I miss her so much,” Nobuyuki Niiya, 63, said of his departed pet dog. Irino beach is a famed surfing spot in Kuroshio on the main island of Shikoku... She earned the moniker “plastic bottle dog” and was featured many times in newspaper and TV reports.
