TOSA INU. Country of origin: Japan.
TOSA INU. Country of origin: Japan. The Tosa Inu, or Tosa Ken, is a breed of Japanese dog , originating in the province of Tosa, which today is part of the prefecture of Kochi, on the island of Shikoku. Its ancestor, the Shikoku Inu , had ruled dogfighting since the 14th century.

Some were crossed with the Shikoku Inu at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century with the aim of creating an invincible dog. Indeed, the supremacy of the Shikoku Inu had then been strongly undermined by the Akita Inu , originally from the north of the country. It is from these crossings that the current Tosa w...

"The Tosa Diary" by Ki no Tsurayuki is a classical Japanese literary work that offers a poignant and introspective glimpse into the author's journey from the capital city of Kyoto to Tosa province. Written in the form of a travel journal or diary, this piece not only serves as a travelogue but also delves into the emotional and cultural nuances of the era.Tsurayuki, a courtier and a celebrated poet, embarks on a journey to Tosa on official duty. The diary begins with a profound sense of departure and nostalgia as he leaves behind his beloved Kyoto. Through the passage of time and the changing landscapes, the author meticulously captures his observations, emotions, and reflections, offering readers a vivid portrayal of his experiences. The work's narrative structure is layered with poetic sensitivity, capturing the transient nature of life and the beauty found within fleeting moments. Tsurayuki's prose is infused with profound emotions, as he navigates through various landscapes, seasons, and encounters. His descriptions of nature are not merely observational but imbued with a sense of reverence and spiritual connection, reflecting the deep influence of nature in Japanese culture. Moreover, Tsurayuki’s writing style seamlessly weaves poetry into prose, blending the two art forms to create a harmonious literary piece. His use of waka, a traditional Japanese poetic form, interspersed throughout the diary, adds depth and lyrical beauty to his descriptions. These verses serve as a reflection of the author's inner thoughts and feelings, elevating the narrative beyond a mere travel account. The diary is not solely focused on the external journey; it also explores Tsurayuki's personal and emotional landscape. He grapples with homesickness, reflecting on his longing for the familiarity of Kyoto and the people he left behind. His introspections often touch upon themes of transience, impermanence, and the passage of time, mirroring the broader philosophical underpinnings of Japanese aesthetics. In addition to personal reflections, "The Tosa Diary" provides insights into the socio-cultural aspects of the Heian period. Tsurayuki’s interactions with locals, discussions about local customs, and his role as an official recorder offer glimpses into the society and governance of that time. The diary, therefore, becomes a valuable historical document shedding light on the customs, language, and traditions prevalent in the regions he traverses.Tsurayuki's narrative voice is contemplative, evoking empathy and resonance with readers across time. His keen observations of mundane occurrences, coupled with profound insights, invite readers to contemplate the universal themes of human existence. In conclusion, "The Tosa Diary" stands as a testament to Tsurayuki's skill as a writer, capturing the essence of his physical journey while simultaneously delving into the depths of his emotions and thoughts. Its significance extends beyond a mere travelogue, offering a multi-layered narrative that intertwines nature, poetry, personal reflections, and cultural observations. As a classic work of Japanese literature, it continues to enchant readers, inviting them to embark on a profound and introspective journey alongside the author.

Following the arrival of the American Commodore Matthew Perry in 1854, which led to the forced opening of the country, trade with the West multiplied, and many new breeds of dogs arrived. Some were crossed with the Shikoku Inu at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century with the aim of creating an invincible dog. Indeed, the supremacy of the Shikoku Inu had then been strongly undermined by the Akita Inu , originally from the north of the country. It is from these crossings that the current Tosa was born.

The Western breeds thus used to develop the Tosa were the English Bulldog in 1872, the Mastiff in 1874, the German Shorthaired Pointer in 1876 and much later, in 1924, the Great Dane (or Great Dane) . Some say that Saint Bernards and Bull Terriers were also used, but there is no written record to support this hypothesis.
The 1930s marked the peak of the breed: at that time, nearly 5,000 fighting dog breeders worked with Tosa all over the country, giving birth to thousands of new representatives of the breed each year.
The Second World War almost caused its extinction, however: food was lacking for the inhabitants, and providing for the needs of a 50 kg fighting dog was not a priority. It was specimens exported to Taiwan and Korea, as well as a few that survived on the island of Hokkaido, which made it possible to resume breeding once hostilities were over.
