The sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus) (previously: Tetrao phasianellus), is a medium-sized prairie grouse. It is also known as the sharptail, and is known as "fire grouse" or "fire bird" by Native American Indians due to their reliance on brush fires to keep their habitat open.
Taxonomy
The greater prairie-chicken, lesser prairie-chicken, and sharp-tailed grouse make up the genusTympanuchus, a genus of grouse found only in North America. The full scientific name of the sharp-tailed grouse is Tympanuchus phasianellus. Six extant and one extinct subspecies of sharp-tailed grouse have been described:
T. p. phasianellus: the nominate race or northern sharp-tailed grouse is found in Manitoba, northern Ontario, and central Quebec. It is partly migratory.
T. p. kennicotti: the northwestern sharp-tailed grouse is resident from the Mackenzie River to the Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories, Canada.
T. p. caurus: the Alaska sharp-tailed grouse inhabits north-central Alaska eastwards to the southern Yukon, northern British Columbia, and northern Alberta.
In early spring, just after the snow melts, male sharp-tailed grouse take to the dance floor in effort to secure breeding rights. Their early morning dance consists of rapidly stomping their feet, rattling their tail feathers and spinning in circles . A distinctive noise created when dancing is a emitted when stamping their feet 20 times per second and is usually accompanied by a very distinct “cooing” call. The most dominant male waits in the center of the dance floor, known as a lek. Females will copulate only with the winning male and then leave to raise their young alone.

Sharp-tailed Grouse
Sharp-tailed Grouse populations are just one of the wildlife species being monitored through our WMA pilot projects at both our Langruth and Broomhill WMA sites. Over time, if left unmanaged/disturbed, grassland habitat gets overgrown with shrubs and woody vegetation, removing the juxtaposition that species like the sharp-tailed grouse rely on for their various needs, such as food, cover and nesting habitat. Using land management activities such as mowing shrubs and implementing rotational cattle grazing, the WMA pilot projects aim to reduce the amount of shrubs and brush in the WMAs, restoring grassland habitat in order to provide a more productive environment for wildlife species.

Real Angry Birds: Sharp-tailed Grouse Battle
Sharp-tailed Grouse square off in intense battles for territory and breeding rights. These grouse form leks, mating arenas where males meet to compete for territory and attract females. This leads to continual fighting as they strive to outdo each other.

Wildlife Wednesday | Grouse ID (sharp-tailed & ruffed)
Welcome to Wildlife Wednesday! This week, we will sharpen our identification skills between two of Montana's native grouse species, the sharp-tailed and ruffed. Recently, FWP has worked to restore native sharp-tailed grouse to western Montana. This means there will be increased chances for sharp-tailed grouse sightings as these relocated birds move into new areas, so hunters and others should keep a careful lookout.

Hunting Sharp-tailed Grouse - How Much Passion
In this bird hunting video we follow members of the Minnesota Sharp-tailed Grouse Society into the grasslands in search of their passion of hunting sharp-tailed grouse. It’s a measure of their common love for the bird, the wild and public places that sustain them, and their mutual concern for the critical future they face as biologists, hunters, and volunteers come together to make sure the sharptails have a voice.
