Grouse are heavily built like other Galliformes such as chickens. They range in length from 31 to 95cm (12 to 37in), and in weight from 0.3 to 6.5kg (0.66 to 14.33lb). Males are bigger than females—twice as heavy in the western capercaillie, the biggest member of the family. Grouse have feathered nostrils. Their legs are feathered to the toes, and in winter the toes, too, have feathers or small scales on the sides, an adaptation for walking on snow and burrowing into it for shelter. Unlike other Galliformes, they have no spurs.
The Famous Grouse is a brand of blendedScotch whisky, first produced by Matthew Gloag & Son in 1896, and currently produced and owned by The Edrington Group. The single malt whiskies used in The Famous Grouse blend include the Edrington owned Highland Park and The Macallan. Its emblem is the Red Grouse, Scotland's national game bird.
It has been the highest selling whisky in Scotland since 1980. As a standard price blended Scotch whisky, its main competitors in its home market are Bell's, Teacher's and Grant's. The majority of its UK sales are during the Christmas period.
In 1860, his son, William Gloag, took over the company and began producing blended whiskies. In 1896, William's nephew, also named Matthew after his grandfather, took over the company. He created The Grouse Brand blend in 1896, which due to its popularity, was renamed "The Famous Grouse" in 1905. Matthew Gloag's daughter Phillippa first designed the label's grouse icon.

The Famous Grouse (Should you be buying better?) | No Nonsense Whisky #143
The Famous Grouse is one of many 'supermarket' blends available literally everywhere. Usually, it's very cheap, hovering around £15 in the UK. This particular blend is owned by the Edrington group so you can expect the likes of Macallan and Highland Park to be in the mix.
Personally, I'm not a fan, but it's perfectly serviceable in a pinch and it's perfect for the untrained house guests who want a whisky and coke

The Famous Grouse V Black Bottle Blended Scotch Whisky Comparison Review
We have mostly reviewed single malts on here but we can't ignore two very popular Scottish household whisky names in the blend category! Famous Grouse is one of a handful of blended scotches that you'd likely find on any gantry and in almost any drinks cupboard in Scotland! Black bottle is a bit more particular and its one we have been a bit more familiar with in recent years.
What do you think of these two historic whisky staples? What do you use them for? Mixing, parties, cooking. . . or just dramming? Or would you not let them darken your whisky cupboard's door? Let us now in the comments!

The Famous Grouse: The Single Malt Review Episode 178
Famous Grouse is one of the most dominant no-age-statement blends on the market, but perhaps not one of the best. It's attempt to emulate a rich and heavy character with such young whisky falls rather flat for us. This episode is brought to you by Charlie the cat, who is neither famous or a grouse, but he is very good at sitting down for an entire video. Well done Charlie.
