Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan (Somali:Shariif Xasan Sheekh Aadan, Arabic:شريف حسن الشيخ عدن) (born 1946?) is a Somali politician. He is a former Finance Minister of Somalia, and the current Speaker of the Transitional Federal Parliament (TFP). He hails from the Adan Mirifle (Siyeed) Ashraaf sub-clan of the Rahanweyn (Digil and Mirifle) major clan.
On October 6, 2005, he was quoted as saying, "In my view, Ethiopia does not want a functioning government in Somalia and I want to see that the world knows this. Even if Ethiopia does want a government here, it wants a fiefdom government - multiple governments which are all weak."
On January 17, 2007, the Parliament voted to oust him due to his opposition of a peacekeeping force for Somalia and his expressions of support and unauthorized meetings with the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) which acted against the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and his opposition to Ethiopian intervention in the 2006–2007 Somali war, with 183 votes against him, eight in favor and one abstention. Justice Minister Adan Mohamed Nuur became his successor in Parliamentary elections on January 31, 2007, and sworn in on February 3, 2007.
Aden (UK/ˈeɪdən/AY-duhn,US/ˈɑːdɛn/AH-den;Arabic:عدنʻAdin/ʻAdanYemeni pronunciation: [ˈʕæden, ˈʕædæn]) is a seaport city in Yemen, located by the eastern approach to the Red Sea (the Gulf of Aden), some 170 kilometres (110mi) east of Bab-el-Mandeb. Its population is approximately 800,000 people. Aden's ancient, natural harbour lies in the crater of a dormant volcano which now forms a peninsula, joined to the mainland by a low isthmus. This harbour, Front Bay, was first used by the ancient Kingdom of Awsan between the 5th and 7th centuries BC. The modern harbour is on the other side of the peninsula. Aden gives its name to the Gulf of Aden.
Aden consists of a number of distinct sub-centres: Crater, the original port city; Ma'alla, the modern port; Tawahi, known as "Steamer Point" in the colonial period; and the resorts of Gold Mohur. Khormaksar, located on the isthmus that connects Aden proper with the mainland, includes the city's diplomatic missions, the main offices of Aden University, and Aden International Airport (the former British Royal Air Force station RAF Khormaksar), Yemen's second biggest airport. On the mainland are the sub-centres of Sheikh Othman, a former oasis area; Al-Mansura, a town planned by the British; and Madinat ash-Sha'b (formerly Madinat al-Itihad), the site designated as the capital of the South Arabian Federation and now home to a large power/desalinization facility and additional faculties of Aden University.
Sharīf Asharif or Alsharif (Arabic:شريفšarīf) or Chérif (Darija: Chorfa) is a traditional Arabtitle in origin, the word is an adjective meaning "noble", "highborn". The feminine singular is sharifa(h) (Arabic:شريفةšarīfah). The masculine plural is Ashraf (Arabic:اشرافʾašrāf).
Sunnis in the Arab world reserve the term sharif for descendants of Hasan ibn Ali, while sayyid is used for descendants of Husayn ibn Ali, Hasan's younger brother. Both Hasan and Husayn are grandchildren of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, through the marriage of his cousin Ali and his daughter Fatima. However ever since the post-Hashemite era began in 1925 after the fall of the Sharif of Mecca, the term sayyid has been used to denote descendants from both Hasan and Husayn. Shiites use the terms sayyid and habib to denote descendants from both Hasan and Husayn; see also ashraf.
From 1201 until 1925, when the Hejaz was conquered by Ibn Saud, this family (the descendants of Hasan ibn Ali) held the office of the Sharīf of Mecca, often also carrying the title and office of King of Hejaz. Descendants now rule the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the name being taken from the Banu Hashim, the sub-tribe of Banu Quraish, to which Muhammad belonged.
Sharif is a List A cricketer from Bangladesh. He played one match for Chittagong Division in 2001/02, scoring 10 and taking 1 for 14 against the touring Zimbabweans.

Soldier in the Sun (1964) Aden/Yemen BBC
From 1964, this "informational programme" follows the British Army in Aden (Yemen) during the state of emergency in 1964.
Aden was one of the last outposts of the British Empire and a strategic part of the Arabian Gulf guarding access to the Suez Canal. The British colony had become a hotbed of insurgency, supported by Egypt. The film follows British (occuypying) troops as they try to keep order in an increasingly violent mountainous region from where the insurgents regularly attack the Port area.

British Troops Battle Aden Rebels | 2 Paratroopers Killed | "Cap Badge" | Radfan Campaign | May 1964
Tuesday, May 5th 1964.
Footage from a furious battle between British troops and local insurgents linked to the National Liberation Front, a Marxist political organisation with a paramilitary wing.
Source: Reuters News Archive.
Notes:
The British troops were carrying out the second phase of the Radfan Campaign, one of a series of operations conducted during the Aden Emergency between January and May of 1964.
The first operation in January was known as "Nut cracker" and this, the second one, was dubbed "Cap Badge". The battle on the Radfan Mountains lasted for 12 hours with two British paratroops killed and at least 6 insurgents killed.
The British paratroopers began the operation by marching under the darkness of night to an area where they encircled the insurgents. An artillery force...

British Soldiers The Aden Emergency
The Aden Emergency, also known as the Radfan Uprising, was an insurgency against the British Crown and South Arabia forces in the British Protectorate of South Arabia which now form part of Yemen. Partly inspired by Nasser's pan-Arab nationalism, it began on 14 October 1963 with the throwing of a grenade at a gathering of British officials at Aden Airport. A state of emergency was then declared in the British Crown colony of Aden and its hinterland, the Aden Protectorate. The emergency escalated in 1967 and hastened the end of British rule in the territory which had begun in 1839. On 30 November 1967, British forces withdrew and the independent People's Republic of South Yemen was proclaimed.

The Aden Emergency 1963-67, is another one of those forgotten conflicts that marked the end of the British Empire.
Over 90 British servicemen were killed and 500 wounded in a 4-year war that not only has been largely forgotten but which Britain never really wanted to fight in the first place.
It also brought to the fore a maverick British Army officer, Lt. Colonel Colin Mitchell, dubbed by the press “Mad Mitch”.

An artillery force fired a salvo of rounds for diversionary purposes while the paratroops charged a targeted village and occupied it. They were then fired upon from the surrounding mountains and pinned down until relieved by marine commandos.
A communique issued at the time by the British Middle East Commander-in-Chief said that while the British had achieved their immediate aim, the "military threat" had not been eliminated.
A total of 13 British military personnel were killed between April 25th 1964 and July 31st 1964.
The Radfan uprising would escalate in 1967 and British forces would be withdrawn and bring to an end British rule which had commenced in 1839.
The independent People's Republic of South Yemen was then proclaimed.

Here is a short piece of film that was grabbed by a Reuters cameraman in 1967. It graphically shows the hatred of the local people that had built up in the British troops.

[Chorus]
Tek başınayız aden
Hiç kimsemiz yok aden
Paramparçayız aden
Vurdular ölmedim aden
[Verse]
Aden bir var bir yok
Kaçıcamda yok bi yol
Tanrı durma yap diyor
Kalbim uslanmıyor
Beden hissizleşiyor
Acıyı hissetmiyor
Aden yakıp yıkıyor geriye ne kalıyor?
Varsa kalp eğer çık öteye göster
Beni böyle yarım bırakma aden bi söz ver
Veremezsin tabi çünkü hiç işine gelmez
Kızım başaramayacaksın vurulmayla ölmem.
Bir bak şu haline hep anlamsız tavırların
Sen gidersen eğer hikayemiz yarım kalır
Yeni bir hikaye yazmak baya zaman alır
Sayende düşman ettik tanrıları ,
Peşimde bir sürü dert
Kaçamam bir sürüler
Tam bitti dediğimde
Sativam alır alev
Bunu beraber yapmamız gerek yapamıyoruz,
Bir kazananı yoksa niye savaşıyoruz?
