Born Arthur Jackson in Jonesville, South Carolina, United States, to David Jackson, a farmer and native of Virginia, and Emma Jackson, Arthur was the fourth of six children. His fraternal great-grandmother, Racheal Williams, was born 1810 in Colonial Virginia, and was commonly referred to as a mulatto. She may have had a Caucasian mother or father, most likely, a caucasian father, as this would have been typical for the time period.
Peg Leg Sam taught himself to play harmonica as a small child but resented school, left home at the age of 12, and never stopped roving. He shined shoes, acted as a house boy, cooked on ships, hoboed, then made a living busking on street corners. He lost his leg trying to hop a train but made a peg out of a fencepost, bound it to his stub with a leather belt and kept moving.
A pegleg is a prosthesis, or artificial limb, fitted to the remaining stump of a human leg. Its use dates to antiquity.
By the late 19th century, prosthetics vendors would offer peg legs as cheaper alternatives to more intricate lifelike artificial legs.
Even as vendors touted advantages of more complicated prostheses over simple peg legs,
according to a contemporary surgeon, many patients found a peg leg more comfortable for walking. According to medical reports, some amputees were able to adjust to the use of a peg leg so well that they could walk 10, or even 30, miles in one day.
Nowadays, wooden peg legs have been replaced by more modern materials, though some sports prostheses do have the same form.
It was recorded in November 1977 and prominently features Carter on piccolo bass. Often carrying the melody the instrument is a focus of 3 of the albums 6 tracks, while fellow bass player Buster Williams performs the traditional role of the instrument on those tracks. The rhythm section is completed by piano and percussion (on all but 1 track), and guitar on 4 tracks. The standard jazz-ensemble is further augmented, on all 6 tracks, by woodwinds (see below).
Carter uses a piccolo bass tuned a fourth higher than a normal double bass (low to high: A-D-G-C).
The city had a population of 877,926 in the 2014 census, making it Alberta's second-largest city and Canada's fifth-largest municipality. The Fall of Joe “PEGLEG’’ Morgan
Joe (Pegleg) Morgan, a Slavic-American street kid from the Eastside who grew up to become the Mexican Mafia’s reputed godfather, died of cancer while serving a life sentence in state prison.
The 64-year-old convict, whose unlikely ascent through the Chicano gang hierarchy served as inspiration for the movie “American Me,” had spent 40 years behind bars for crimes ranging from murder to a jail escape that he masterminded by hiding hacksaw blades in his prosthetic leg.
