The Dutch colonized "New Netherland," the area now known as New York, in order to make money from the fur trade and agricultural pursuits. The Dutch colonies thrived until the English invaded the colony and re-named it for the Duke of York.

Walloons in New Netherland: Forgotten Settlers in a Forgotten Colony
In Battery Park, lower Manhattan, you’ll see a monument that reads…’in Memory of the Walloon Settlers who came over to America in the Nieu Nederland Under the Inspiration of Jesse De Forest”
So after half a dozen videos of me referring to New Netherland as a Dutch Colony… now I’m telling you it’s not even Dutch? But Walloon?

New Netherland 1614-1667
New Netherland (Dutch: Nieuw-Nederland) was the 17th-century colonial province of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands on the East Coast of North America. The settled areas are now part of the Mid-Atlantic States of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Connecticut, with small outposts in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. The provincial capital of New Amsterdam was located at the southern tip of the island of Manhattan on upper New York Bay.

New Netherland 1614-1667
New Netherland (Dutch: Nieuw-Nederland) was the 17th-century colonial province of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands on the East Coast of North America. The claimed territories were the lands from the Delmarva Peninsula to extreme southwestern Cape Cod.
The colony was conceived as a private business venture to exploit the North American fur trade. During its first decades, New Netherland was settled rather slowly, partially as a result of policy mismanagement by the Dutch West India Company (WIC) and partially as a result of conflicts with Native Americans. The settlement of New Sweden encroached on its southern flank, while its northern border was re-drawn to accommodate an expanding New England. During the 1650s, the colony experienced dramatic growth and became a major port for trade in the North Atlantic. The surrender of Fort Amsterdam to England in 1664 was formalized in 1667, contributing to the Second Anglo--Dutch War. In 1673, the Dutch re-took the area but relinquished it under the Second Treaty of Westminster ending the Third Anglo-Dutch War the next year.
The inhabitants of New Netherland were Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans, the latter chiefly imported as enslaved laborers. Descendants of the original settlers played a prominent role in colonial America. For two centuries, New Netherland Dutch culture characterized the region (today's Capital District around Albany, the Hudson Valley, western Long Island, northeastern New Jersey, and New York City). The concepts of civil liberties and pluralism introduced in the province became mainstays of American political and social life.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. A neglected pile of documents in early Dutch are left intact while the more recently archived British history documents that shaped our commonly held assumptions about Americas founders were burned in a fire. Ghering began to translate the papers of the early Dutch settlers in New York and upended many of our assumptions about our roots.
Tim and Nina Zagat co-founded the Zagat Survey in 1979 as a way to collect and correlate the ratings of New York restaurants by their friends. The Survey now covers over 70 cities, with reviews based on the input of hundreds of thousands of individuals. In addition to restaurants, Zagat guides now rate hotels, nightlife, shopping, and golf courses. In 2012, the Zagat Survey became part of Google. Tim has served in various prominent civic, cultural, and charitable capacities. He is currently a board member of the Partnership for NYC, the World Travel & Tourism Council, and NYC & Company, the official marketing, promotion, and tourism arm of New York City, which he chaired twice. Nina was named one of the Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World by the Star Group, one of Crain's Top Tech 100, and one of Crain's New York 100 Most Influential Women. Prior to founding the Zagat Survey, Tim and Nina were prominent attorneys in New York. They reside in New York City and Pine Plains, NY.
