Before intelligence work, Lebedev served in the Army during 1971-72. He began his career in 1975 when he joined the KGB. He began duties in the First Chief Directorate (foreign intelligence) in 1975.
Lebedev was appointed as Director of the SVR on 20 May 2000. According to news reports, he was appointed to the post because President Vladimir Putin wanted "an intelligence chief whom he knows well and has confidence in." Putin and Lebedev met while serving in East Germany.
Sergey Alexeyevich Lebedev (Russian:Серге́й Алексе́евич Ле́бедев; 2 November 1902, n.s. – 3 July 1974) was a Soviet scientist in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science, and designer of the first Soviet computers.
Lebedev was born in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. He graduated from Moscow Highest Technical School in 1928. From then until 1946 he worked at All-Union Electrotechnical Institute (formerly a division of MSTU) in Moscow and Kiev. In 1939 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Sciences for the development of the theory of "artificial stability" of electrical systems.
During World War II, Lebedev worked in the field of control automation of complex systems. His group designed a weapon-aiming stabilization system for tanks and an automatic guidance system for airborne missiles. To perform these tasks Lebedev developed an analog computer system to solve ordinary differential equations.
From 1946 to 1951 he headed the Kiev Electrotechnical Institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, working on improving the stability of electrical systems. For this work he received the Stalin (State) prize in 1950.
Lebedev was born in 1874 in Lublin and went to school in Warsaw. In 1900, he graduated from St. Petersburg University and found work at the Petersburg Margarine Factory.
Starting in 1902, Lebedev moved from university to university in Russia, starting at the Saint-Petersburg Institute for Railroad Engineering. In 1904, he returned to St. Petersburg University to work under Alexei Yevgrafovich Favorskii, (Russian: Алексей Евграфович Фаворский; (Pavlovo, in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, 20 February [O.S. 3 March] 1860; Leningrad 8 August 1945), Stalin Prize, 1941, for contributions to the manufacture of synthetic rubber.
Sergey Elefertovich Lebedev (Russian:Сергей Элефертович Лебедев) (born 31 January 1969 in the Uzbek SSR, Soviet Union) is a retired football midfielder. Lebedev is a former Uzbekistani international, who obtained a total number of 33 caps during his career, scoring ten goals. He later on became a football coach.
Playing career
Lebedev started playing professionally in Turbina Naberezhnye Chelny in 1985. He completed 3 seasons for Turbina and wento to FC Dynamo Kirov in 1988. In 1989-91 he played for Neftyanik Fergana and 1990 he won Soviet Second League with club and promoted to Soviet First League.
In 1992-1999 he played for Neftchi Farg'ona and won 4 times Uzbekistani championship and two Uzbek Cups. He became Neftchi's best League goalscorer in 1996 and 1998 seasons. His last club played was also Neftchi Farg'ona. He joined club in 2006 after playing for Metallurg Bekabad in 2005.
International
Lebedev capped 33 matches, scoring 10 goals for national team. He was one of the player of Uzbekistan who won Asian Games in 1994. He scored two goals in Asian Games 1994. Lebedev scored his second goal in Final match against China on 8 minute as Uzbekistan after that began leading 2:0. He also partipicated in 2 AFC Asian Cups: 1996 AFC Asian Cup and 2000 AFC Asian Cup.
He shared 2nd with Simon Alapin, behind Sergey von Freymann, in 1907, won (Quadrangular) in 1908, tied for 7–8th (All-Russian Amateur Tournament, Alexander Alekhine won) in 1909, tied for 1st–3rd with Freymann and Grigory Levenfish in 1910, took 15th (the 8th All-Russian Masters' Tournament (RUS-ch), Alekhine and Aron Nimzowitsch won) in 1913/14, all played in St. Petersburg.
