How to Sew: French Seams | Step-by-Step Sewing Tutorial | Neat Seam for Lightweight Fabrics
This sewing lesson demonstrates how to create a french seam using your sewing machine - with and without trimming the fabric.
French seams are a seam that you need to sew along twice, but the extra effort is worth it to make a neat seam where the raw edges are completely enclosed on the wrong side of the fabric.
These seams add quality to your project and are ideal for lightweight and delicate fabrics, particularly those that fray easily.
I hope you find this video helpful!

One of my favorite seam finishes is the French seam, simply because there are no raw edges inside the garment. It's great on slinky fabrics like this silk charmeuse
Hi I’m Angela Wolf, let me show you how easy it is to sew a French seam.
If you use a plain seam you'll need to finish these raw edges of the seam allowance to avoid fraying.
But a French seam's seam allowance is already finished as part of the process!
Check your sewing pattern to determine what the seam allowances are. I find it easiest to change my seam allowances to 1 inch. / Say my pattern has seam allowances that are 5/8 of an inch - I'll add 3/8 of an inch to each seam allowance before cutting out my pattern.
Unlike a plain seam, you'll start with the wrong sides of the fabric facing each other and stitch with a half-inch seam allowance
Trim the seam allowance to about a quarter of an inch
Press the seam allowance to one side - it’s a good idea to press from both sides of the seam just to make sure the fabric lays nice and flat
Now fold the fabric along that stitch line, enclosing the seam allowance, and press again. Use a tailor’s clapper if you have one for a nice crisp crease.
Next, stitch right along this pressed edge with a half-inch seam allowance, to encase the raw edges.
Press the seam allowance towards one side. Remember if you’re using this seam in a garment you'd press towards the back of the garment...
See how nice this looks, and it’s super easy!

In this video, I show you how to quickly and neatly sew a flat fell seam without any special sewing machine attachment ( FELLING FOOT) or having to trim your seam allowance and then try to press a perfectly even fold.
Flat Fell seams keep seam allowances flat and cover the raw edges.
It is a very strong seam and you often see them sewn on the inseam of denim jeans. It’s also a great seam for bags because of its strength.
It is a seam made by placing one edge inside a folded edge and then stitching the fold down. One or both of the seam edges are topstitched which encases the raw edges and keeps them from fraying.
When doing this type of seam, you will need to adjust your seam allowances for your project. The layer that folds on top the the other layer needs to have double seam allowance in order for it to finish to correct measurement.
Practice on scrap pieces of fabric before attempting it on your project. It doesn’t take long to perfect!

Hi, I'm Jennifer from Workroom Social and today I'm going to show you how to sew a flat felled seam. A flat felled seam encases the raw edge of the seam allowance and this is a very common way to finish seams that you see on jeans and on sportswear.
To demonstrate that today, we're going to need to identify the wrong side of the fabric. So I'm just going to mark my two wrong sides. I'm going to start by sewing wrong sides together. I'm going to sew a 5/8 of an inch seam allowance. So I'm lining up my fabric with the raw edge on the 5/8 guide on my seam guide, and I'm just sewing a straight stitch. I'm using a 2.5 millimeter stitch length. I'm just going to go all the way down to the bottom.
Now, so we have our wrong sides together and our right sides with the seam allowance up. So the next thing I want to do is to just finger press this seam open, so it lies a little bit flat, a little flatter. Then I want to trim one side of the seam allowance down short because we're going to encase it with the other seam allowance. So I'm going to trim this down and leave about between 1/8 and 1/4 of an inch.
Now, to hide all these raw edges, I'm just going to take this larger seam allowance and fold it under, and then fold the whole thing over, so everything is hidden. Then you'll just pin it in place, and then you can just move up your seam to do the whole thing. Of course, if you're uncomfortable doing this by eye, you can get your seam guide out or ruler and measure this fold so that it's all nice and even.
So we have our seam in place, and then we're just going to go to the sewing machine and stitch close to this fold all the way down to secure our seam. We'll go back to the sewing machine and I'm going to lower the presser foot and I'm just going to eyeball close to this edge. Now when you're doing this, you can always use the edge of the inside of the presser foot as your guide for an edge stitch. Or my presser foot has little notches on the right hand side that are also really useful reference guides.
Okay, and there we have our flat felled seam, and this is the right side. This is the wrong side. Of course, depending on your preference, you can always choose to use this seam look for your right side, if that's what you would prefer, and put this one the wrong side. It's really up to you. But that's how you sew a flat felled seam.
