The year is 1944. The second World War is in full swing and around the territories occupied by Nazi Germany, Jews and others considered undesirables by the Nazi regime are rounded up and sent to concentration camps, awaiting certain death. Raoul Gustav Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat, voluntarily travelled to Hungary in order to save Hungarian Jews from the Nazis. He saved the lives of thousands of Jews while in Hungary, providing them with temporary Swedish passports and preventing the massacre of the largest Jewish ghetto in Budapest. As the war was coming to an end and the Russians entered Budapest, he was arrested. He disappeared shortly thereafter and it is nearly certain he died in a Soviet prison, though there never has...

Raoul Wallenberg- A Hero of the Holocaust
Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish businessman, saved the lives of tens of thousands of Jewish people during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. Two of those people whom he saved are Tom and Annette Lantos. Tom Lantos later sponsored a bill to make Wallenberg an honorary citizen of the USA. Wallenberg mysteriously disappeared in 1947, never to be heard from again. It is believed that Wallenberg was detained by the USSR and died during this time.

Raoul Wallenberg: One Person Can Make a Difference
Each year the recipient of the Wallenberg Medal is invited to present a lecture at the University of Michigan. The medalists take the stage at Rackham Auditorium and share their stories with an audience drawn from our campus and many surrounding communities.
Each Lecture is different. In some years, survivors of Nazi persecution recounted their physical resistance in face of hellish danger. In others, medalists considered the effect over the years that the bravery of friends and family has had on the course of history. Lectures have been given by politicians who explain why they resisted unjust governments and, in turn, worked to develop a new order, honoring their personal vision with decades of public service. Some medalists have focused on their missions: to reject a life of wealth and...

Survivor recalls rescue activity in Budapest and the role of Raoul Wallenberg
Holocaust survivor Agnes Mandl Adachi describes helping in the rescue effort to pull Jews from the Danube River and the role of Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who worked to Hungarian Jews.
Agnes was in Switzerland in 1939 to study French. She returned to Budapest in 1940. After the Germans occupied Hungary in 1944, Agnes was given refuge in the Swedish embassy. She then began to work for Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg in his efforts to save the Jews of Budapest, including the distribution of protective passes (Schutzpaesse). When the Soviets entered Budapest, Agnes decided to go to Romania.

Some medalists have focused on their missions: to reject a life of wealth and rescue people who are literally slaves of corrupt businesses; to devote a life to the non-violent and peaceful pursuit of human rights.
What the Wallenberg Lecturers have in common is their ability to inspire all with their vision, and the reality of their strength to act upon that vision. Here is the power of an eyewitness account to convince us that, although evil truly occurs, with moral courage individual actions effect a change in the world. In their Lectures, the Wallenberg medalists reveal a common characteristic: they acted selflessly without expectation of reward. The Lectures are profiles of moral excellence in ordinary people. The words of the medalists help us to imagine how it is that some can see all people as human; they share a vision of human dignity.

A bust of Swedish humanitarian Raoul Wallenberg has been unveiled at a ceremony in Washington D.C.
The ceremony was attended by prominent members of the U-S congress including Newt Gingrich, the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Only seven other foreigners have busts in the Capitol Rotunda.
A Swede who helped Jews escape Nazi persecution during World War II was immortalized at the U-S capitol in Washington.
The statute stands in the Capitol Rotunda.
House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wallenberg's sacrifices for a people whose religion he didn't share served as an example that he hopes will inspire others.
SOUNDBITE:
"He woke up each morning and in an act of enormous courage he voluntarily risked his life to save people he had never met, people of a religion he did not belong to, but people who as humans he had he felt compelled to reach out to."
SUPER CAPTION: U.S. Rep. Newt Gingrich (Republican) Speaker of the House
Senator Tom Daschle said the man's courage clearly had relevance today.
SOUNDBITE:
As we are again faced with horrifying international examples of ethnic cruelty it is most appropriate that we now pay fitting tribute and remembrance to what Raoul Wallenberg stood for and exemplified by his life.
SUPER CAPTION: U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle (Democrat) Minority Leader
Wallenberg is credited with saving 100-thousand Hungarian Jews, including one who is today a U-S Congressman -- Tom Lantos, a democrat from California.
His fellow Swedes joined in the praises and were clearly proud of his achievement.
SOUNDBITE:
Mankind needs at least a gleam of light such as the one in Budapest in 1944. Raoul Wallenberg and his actions were more than that. He was a burning torch in total darkness.
SUPER CAPTION: Birgitta Dahl, speaker of the Swedish parliament
Wallenberg becomes the seventh foreigner to be so honored.
