The Seal Islands (also known as Îles des Phoques, Islas Foca, Islotes Foca and Seal Rocks) are a group of small islands and rocky islets lying about 7km north and north-west of Elephant Island, in the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica. They extend east – west for about 5km, and are separated from Elephant Island by Sealers Passage. The group takes its name from the largest island, which CaptainWilliam Smith named Seal Island in 1820 because of the number of seals killed there.
Description
Seal Island, the largest in the group, has a coastline of precipitous cliffs, with a sandy beach on the western shore and some small coves. It rises to 125m in height. It is constituted of poorly consolidated sedimentary rocks which are susceptible to wave and runoff erosion. Other islands in the group are similarly rocky with steep cliffs and few beaches. Ice-cover is seasonal.
The Seal Islands are a group of 12/+ islands in the Bering Sea, trending northeast 7 miles (11km), close to the shores of Bristol Bay, Alaska, 33 miles (53km) southwest of Port Heiden, Alaska Airfield; Bristol Bay Low.
Etymology
The Seal Islands appear as "Ostrova Nerpichoi," meaning "Seal Islands" on Russian maps. They were given their name by Captain Mikhail Dmitrievich Tebenkov, who charted the Northwest Coasts of America (1852, map 24), IRN. They appeared for the first time as "Seal Islands" on an USBF chart in 1888.
The islands lie some 80km (50mi) to the northeast of Orkney and 280km (170mi) southeast of the Faroe Islands and form part of the division between the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the North Sea to the east. The total area is 1,466km2 (566sqmi) and the population totalled 23,210 in 2012. Comprising the Shetland constituency of the Scottish Parliament, Shetland is also one of the 32 council areas of Scotland; the islands' administrative centre and only burgh is Lerwick. Also the capital of Shetland since 1708 taking over from Scalloway.
The largest island, known simply as "Mainland", has an area of 967km2 (373sqmi), making it the third-largest Scottish island and the fifth-largest of the British Isles. There are an additional 15 inhabited islands. The archipelago has an oceanic climate, a complex geology, a rugged coastline and many low, rolling hills.
Shetland is a BBC Scotland crime drama television series starring Douglas Henshall as Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez. The story takes place on the Scottish archipelago of Shetland, though much of the filming was done on the Scottish mainland, with some on location in Shetland.
Production History
The first series consists of two episodes as a pilot -- a single two-part story based on the novel Red Bones by Ann Cleeves. It was broadcast on 10 and 11 March 2013. Subsequently, a full second series was commissioned by the BBC. Series two contains six episodes, filmed in 2013 and screened in 2014. It features three two-part stories based on Ann Cleeves' novels Raven Black, Dead Water and Blue Lightning. Filming began in April 2015 for a third series which began screening on 15 January 2016.

South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula
A 10-day expedition to the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula. During the voyage we spotted Gentoo, Chinstrap and Adelié penguins; crabeater, Weddell and leopard seals; and pods of humpback and orca whales. We also crossed the Antarctic Circle at 66°33' south of the equator and set foot on the Antarctic mainland, our seventh and final continent.
